Aphex Twin has released the first track from his first album in 13 years, Syro.
Finally it's here - the first new music for Aphex Twin in 13 years. The track 'minipops 67 [120.2][source field mix]' from album Syro rolled out on YouTube on Thursday night before being played on Lauren Laverne's BBC6 Music show on Friday.
Aphex Twin returns with 'Syro'
The melodic features a scattered, driving beat and what appears to be vocals, heavily distorted.
In an interview with Rolling Stone earlier this week, Aphex Twin - real name Richard D. James - spoke of this being the golden age for dance and electronic music.
"It's taken people a long time to work these new tools out, and now it's just now kind of like an acoustic guitar," he said. "We're half-cyborg already, whether we like it or not. Everything is based on computers - our whole economy, and most of our creative pursuits, as well. We're not physically connected to them, but that doesn't mean they're not part of our brains."

Syro doesn't hit until September 8, though this week marks the start of a listening tour, with various hipster venues throwing their own playback parties. Tonight, Glazart in Paris and London's The Laundry will be playing the album in full, while Verboten in New York and Complex in Los Angeles will host weekend events. Next week, it's on to Toronto, Chicago, Brussels and Utrecht.
Aphex is back
In one of his first interviews since his return, James told Pitchfork about Kanye West's sampling of 'Drukqs' on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy's 'Blame Game'.
"Is it a sample? I actually don't know what it ended up being in the end, I'm so slack. I know that he tried to f*cking rip me off and claim that he'd written it, and they tried to get away with not paying," he said, "I was really helpful, and when they first sent it to me, I was like, 'Oh, I can re-do that for you, if you like,' because they'd sampled it really badly and time-stretched it and there was loads of artifacts.
"I was like, 'I'll just replay it for you at that speed if you want.' And they totally didn't even say 'hello' or 'thanks,' they just replied with, 'It's not yours, it's ours, and we're not even asking you any more.'" [laughs]
