Karen Gillan has further cemented her rising star status within the US having been cast in the lead role in new ABC comedy Selfie. The Scottish actress' break came with her role as assistant Amy Pond in the BBC sci-fi series Doctor Who which was quickly followed by a transition into Hollywood with the part of Nebula, a key villain, in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

Selfie will be the latest comedy series from the Suburgatory and As Told By Ginger writer Emily Kapnek and will be based on the 1964 Audrey Hepburn movie, My Fair Lady. Gillan's character, Eliza Dooley, will be based on Hepburn's character Eliza Doolittle, who famously receives elocution lessons from a professor so that she can fit into high society.

Gillan's modern portrayal of the character will involve a self-obsessed 20-something who is more concerned about social media 'likes' than actually being liked, according to THR. Dooley suffers a humiliating public break-up which leads to a video of her going viral and earning her more followers than she could have ever dreamed of.

Famous for all the wrong reasons, Dooley enlists the help of a marketing expert at her company to help rebuild her tarnished image. The single camera comedy will examine the notion of fame in the social media-savvy, share-all 21st century and will hilariously explore the pitfalls of constantly broadcasting yourself and when it can all go wrong.
