Karina Smirnoff has broken off her engagement to Detroit Tigers pitcher Brad Penny, just months after the pair "postponed" their wedding plans without any real explanation.
A source explained to E! News that the Dancing With The Stars professional has decided to call it quits, saying, "They are just two different people". Speculation began to intensify after Karina made numerous promotional appearances in Las Vegas over the weekend - choosing to take off her engagement ring at certain times. Sources say she was happy to wear the ring during photo ops, but would remove it when the cameras were off. The dancer donned a Santa hat at the inaugural Winter in Venice celebration at the Venetian and Palazzo hotel and casinos - posing for photographs with fans in front of a 65 foot Christmas tree. Representatives for the couple, who first announced their engagement in December 2010, are yet to officially comment on the split. It's not the first time Smirnoff has broken off an engagement - she was set to marry dancer Maksim Cherkovskiy but the pair eventually split in September 2009 before the big day.
Karina finally became a Dancing With The Stars champion on the show's recent thirteenth season, having lifted the Glitterball trophy with army veteran turned soap star JR Martinez.
