Kasabian Receive Eight NME Awards Nominations

Kasabian Royal Blood Jamie T NME

As if we didn’t know it already, it’s been a very good year for Kasabian. In addition to a chart-topping album and a headline performance at Glastonbury, the group have been nominated for an impressive eight NME Awards.

The Leicester-based band have become arguably the biggest alternative rock band in Britain over the last decade, and this status is reflected by this massive haul of nominations. The band are in the running for: Best Band; Best Live Band; Best Track and Dance Floor Filler (both for lead single ‘Eez-Eh’); Best Music Film (Kasabian: Summer Solstice); ‘Music Moment of the Year’ (for their Glastonbury performance); Best Fan Community and, perhaps most importantly, Best Album for their fifth record 48:13 which was released back in June.

According to The Sun, the 33-year-old – who does not drive – had to take his father Tom Sr to hospital after the freak accident. “It was a bizarre accident and Tom feels really bad about it”, said an insider. "He was in a car park with his dad when it happened and was asked to release the handbrake to let the car forward slightly. By mistake, he put the foot on the accelerator and went into his father."

Tom Meighan Kasabian Metallica

Tom Meighan, lead singer of rock band Kasabian, has offered his two cents regarding the fuss that's been surrounding Metallica headlining at Glastonbury Festival. There has been a heated debate over whether the heavy metal band are the right choice to headline the festival.

Kasabian Metallica Glastonbury Kasabian's Tom Meighan has been discussing the decision for heavy metal band Metallica to headline Glastonbury

Meighan is fully for Metallica headlining the festival and he explained why: “They’re going to be different but who do you f***ing want on stage, The Beach Boys?” He added: “I love Metallica. Everyone’s complaining but [Metallica] can take it anywhere…They’ve been around the block. People will be surprised…They’re a heavy metal band so everyone’s going to panic, but Metallica are great. They’ll be good. They’ll be fantastic, trust me.”

A Week In News: 'Noah' Conjures A Box Office Miracle, Glastonbury Line-Up Revealed, And 'How I Met Your Mother' Bids Farewell

Noah still

Nice Work, 'Noah': Darren Aronofsky's latest epic, Noah, was released last weekend and managed to triumph at its debut box office with $44 million, despite all the negative publicity regarding religious condemnation and middling reviews. Starring Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly and Emma Watson, Noah is based on the well-known Genesis tale but is given a pump of testosterone with the Black Swan director's dramatic CGI marvel. Check out the trailer.

Empire Film Awards: Emma Thompson and James McAvoy were the big winners at this year's Empire Film Awards, taking home trophies in their respective acting categories for Saving Mr. Banks and Filth. Space thriller Gravity and the fantasy sequel The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug were the evening's most-awarded movies with Simon Pegg, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sally Hawkins, Tom Cruise, Hugh Jackman, Steve Coogan and Margot Robbie also honoured for a smashing year in film. Find the full list of winners here.

NME Nominations Leave Rolling Stones Happy: 'Ooh, Blimey! That's Very Nice!'' Says Jagger

Rolling Stones David Bowie Arctic Monkeys Kasabian One Direction

Perennial rock stars The Rolling Stones gave a rather un-rock 'n roll response to learning that they had been nominated for Best Live Band, Best Book, Music Moment of The Year and Best Music Film at the NME awards.

"It's very nice to be nominated. When I first heard it was four things, I thought, 'Ooh, blimey! That's very nice!'' said frontman Mick Jagger. "And it's not a journalists-only thing, it's not a coterie of closely-knit people choosing," the icon added. "It's funny, because when we were rehearsing at Wembley arena last year, it was where we used to do the NME Pollwinners. We remembered, it was the first time we ever played 'Jumping Jack Flash', at one of those Pollwinners concerts!" continued Mick. David Bowie, who recently announced his surprise new album, will go up against old friends The Stones in the Music Moment Of the Year Category, as well as in in the Best Music Video and Hero of the Year categories.

Elsewhere, The Maccabees and Arctic Monkeys have three nominations each and will be up against Kasabian, The Vaccines, Biffy Clyro and The Cribs for the title of Best British Band; one of the most coveted awards. Bowie, Bradley Wiggins, Russian punk band Pussy Riot, US president Barack Obama and singer-songwriter Frank Ocean join Dave Grohl in the battle to be crowned Hero of the Year in the less musical category.

Kasabian, Brixton Academy 19/08/10 Live Review

Kasabian's headline slot at V this weekend has taken something of a backseat with The Libertines impending reunion at Reading/Leeds the following weekend. Both booked in warm up shows in smaller than usual venues. Both sold out in minutes. Whilst The Libertines play the Forum next week, Kasabian returned to Brixton Academy last night, laying down the gauntlet for them and anyone else wishing to get in their way. Played under a flag of St. George hanging from the rafters, the statement to their contemporaries was there for all to see. 'We're the biggest band in Britain.' Be honest, no one really gives a shit about Radiohead any more.
