CBS Reportedly Passed On Nancy Drew Reboot Because It Was 'Too Female'

Sarah Shahi Katherine Heigl Laverne Cox

Iconic female detective Nancy Drew will not be coming back to television, at least on CBS. The network has passed on pilot ‘Drew’, which featured a modern reboot of the character, played by Sarah Shahi, after reportedly finding that the show had tested ‘too female’.

Sarah ShahiSarah Shahi stars as Nancy Drew in crime drama ‘Drew’.

The pilot was one of many the network had been deliberating between and it came from former ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ showrunners Joan Rater and Tony Phelan. According to Deadline, bosses at CBS took extra time to deliberate between ‘Drew’ and Rater and Phelan’s other drama pilot ‘Doubt’, with the latter ultimately getting the green light.

Katherine Heigl Wishes She "Could Do Something To Change" Feud With Shonda Rhimes

Katherine Heigl

Like most Hollywood stars, Katherine Heigl is faced with her fair share of criticism, and this isn't helped by her reputation of being hard to work with behind the scenes. But the 35-year-old actress is now wanting to build bridges with anyone she has wrongly crossed - especially Shonda Rhimes.

NBC just unveiled it’s fall TV schedule, announcing a big change. The network is scaling back its long-running Thursday comedy. Instead, the network is putting all its chips (or most of them anyway) on its breakout hit The Blacklist. The drama will premiere in the advertiser-friendly post-Super Bowl slot next season and then move to 9PM on Thursday.

James Spader

The network is completely revamping the rest of its weekly lineup as well, with seven new comedies and dramas and two miniseries premiering in the 2014/2015 season. Stand-out dramas include the return of former Grey’s Anatomy star Katherine Heigl to prime-time in the thriller State of Affairs (which will receive the coveted post-The Voice slot on Monday nights beginning Nov. 17) and supernatural DC Comics thriller Constantine (filling Friday night along with Grimm). Marry Me, a new comedy by Happy Endings creator David Caspe, will get a boost from The Voice on Tuesdays, while  Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, which stars The Office‘s Ellie Kemper, will debut in midseason. In addition, there’s NBC’s event series, which includes its Heroes reboot Heroes: Reborn and Mark Burnett’s follow-up to hisThe Bible miniseries, A.D.

The $6 Million Tweet: Katherine Heigl Vs. Duane Reade Pharmacy

Katherine Heigl

It’s not exactly a secret that Katherine Heigl doesn’t have the best reputation in Hollywood. With rumors of her diva-ish antics on set, her once promising Hollywood career has recently plateaued. Heigl regularly has two cents to put in about, well, pretty much everything. So we weren’t surprised to hear that she’s unhappy about something again. Although this time we can’t decide whether she’s got a point or not. We’ll lay out the facts and you can help us decide.

Katherine Heigl lawsuit Heigl is renowned for acting like a diva

After discovering that New York pharmacy Duane Reade had used an unauthorised image of Heigl in their ad campaign, the actress has decided to sue the company for $6m. The photograph in question was taken while Heigl was filming her new television series (not a movie, a television series, she’s back on television, we repeat, she’s back on television) and a pap snapped her leaving the pharmacy.

After the glamour of the essentially irrelevant Golden Globes on Sunday, the biggest movie news this week was the Oscar nominations announcement on Wednesday. As expected, 12 Years a Slave and Gravity got another big awards-season boost, while American Hustle, Dallas Buyers Club and Nebraska move into pole position, bumping Inside Llewyn Davis and The Wolf of Wall Street out of the spotlight. Awards contenders continue to dominate cinema screens in both America and Britain, although distributors are sneaking smaller films in as alternative programming. In the US, audiences can catch the high school comedy G.B.F. or the British period romance Summer in February, while in the UK offbeat options include Michael Cera in the Chilean road trip Crystal Fairy and the cheeky Penn & Teller documentary Tim's Vermeer. 'The Nut Job' Has Star Power, But Not Much Else

Will Arnett Katherine Heigl

In the age of Disney — back when only one, or less, animated films were released each year — they had better be good. But these days, when everything can be done electronically and studios are pressured into releasing numerous films each year, the quality may be going down.

The Nut Job - Teaser Trailer

Surly is an aptly named, grumpy and uncompassionate squirrel who's desperate to go to any lengths to store enough food for the coming winter. As he struggles to forage for nourishment in the city, he meets the rest of the neighbourhood's fauna including an excitable street rat, a fat mole and some simple-minded gophers - all of whom agree to accompany him on a major heist; the robbery of Maury's Nut Store which is guarded by a highly slobbery bulldog. The store is haven of all the kinds of nuts Surly could ever wish for and offers him an extended period of food stability. Along the way, though, he must learn what it is to work as a team and know the importance of the people around him before his temper pushes his friends away for good.

Can 'Triplets' Rescue Eddie Murphy's Ailing Hollywood Career?

Eddie Murphy Arnold Schwarzenegger Danny Devito Katherine Heigl Reese Witherspoon

Eddie Murphy has topped one of Forbes magazine's annual lists for 2012, though unfortunately for him, it details the world's most overpaid actors. The actor - who was reportedly commanding $20 million a movie around the turn of the millennium - returns just $2.30 for every $1 he is paid for each of his films.

The stats make Murphy the most overpaid actor in Hollywood, with recent flops including Meet Dave, Imagine That and comedy Tower Heist concreting his No.1 spot. The latter was the most successful of Murphy's recent flicks though it still only earned $152 million on a $75 million budget. The Beverly Hills Cop star can probably take solace in the fact that he returns SOME amount of money for investors, with 2011's most overpaid Hollywood star Drew Barrymore bringing in just 40 cents for every $1 she was paid. Murphy could claw himself out of the list in the next couple of years, with one movie in particular already generating hype. Murphy has signed on to star in Ivan Reitman's comedy Triplets, a sequel of the classic Twins, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Devito. The film revisits both of the original characters Julius and Vincent as they discover they have a third sibling, played by Murphy.  Even if the movie was a critical dud, Triplets would almost certainly do good business at the box-office.

Elsewhere on this year's most overpaid actors list, Katherine Heigl placed at No.2 after returning just $3.40 for every $1 she was paid for her movies. After past commercial hits including Knocked Up, Heigl has appeared in a couple of romantic-comedy bombs such as One For The Money, which took just $37 million. Reese Witherspoon was in at No.3 with $3.90 for every $1 paid, while Nicolas Cage brought in $6 for every $1.

The Ugly Truth Review

Weak
It may be the nature of romantic comedies to be predictable, but this movie never departs from the formula at all. And while the cast is watchable, the film simply has nothing original to say.

Abby (Heigl) is a frazzled breakfast TV producer in Northern California, annoyed when the brutish Mike (Butler) is hired to present a male perspective on her show alongside smiling/strained hosts Larry and Georgia (Higgins and Hines). Mike's theory that men are only interested in looks enrages Abby, who is trying to woo a handsome, successful guy (Winter). Even though she's a complete control freak, she agrees to let Mike help her get her man.

Fortunately, the cast is charming and sometimes even funny. Heigl and Butler could do these roles in their sleep, oozing sass while cutely prickling against each other. Both of them are endearing, in a simplistic sort of way, throwing out witty one-liners and indulging in corny banter that implies the chemistry that is completely absent from the film. Much more fun are Higgins and Hines in small scene-stealing roles that are full of eye-rolling innuendo.

For a film about a strong woman, Abby is awfully needy and desperate. All she can think about is finding the perfect man, and we seem to be the only ones who realise that Mike is the only man the script has in mind for her. Meanwhile, for all his macho posturing and chauvinist comments, he's actually a sensitive soul who understands how men and woman connect. In other words, for all of its bluster, the film isn't remotely as edgy as it pretends to be.

All of the script's male-female sparring uses stereotypes and contrived situations to push the romance forward, from the Cyrano-like coaching to the unsophisticated (and unoriginal) vibrator gag. There are no subplots and no subtext at all. Even the sexuality is simplistic: it's just puritanical sniggering. And by the time the film finally addresses something resonant, wondering who could actually love a control freak, the contrived story and shallow approach leave us cold. But since this is a rom-com with likeable stars, that doesn't really matter.

27 Dresses Review

Bad
Occasionally cute but consistently dim-witted, the romantic comedy 27 Dresses suffers the same number of generic clichés as it glides down the aisles toward a resolution that's as predictable as a wedding band's set list. Celebrate good times? Don't bet on it.

But don't blame the leads. Last year's breakout charmers Katherine Heigl (Knocked Up) and James Marsden (Hairspray, Enchanted) almost salvage this shabby, flabby date movie. He displays impressive comedic timing, and she shows off her deep reservoir of charm. If Knocked marked the arrival of a new rom-com starlet, Dresses at least proves Hollywood's relationship with Heigl is built to last.

Your Mommy Kills Animals Review

Very Good
In the first few minutes of the shrewdly named Your Mommy Kills Animals, we're told the U.S. government named the animal rights movement the #1 domestic terrorist threat in 2005. We spend the rest of the documentary determining whether that's a legitimate assessment or a desperate strategy.

If you've never pegged the animal rights universe as painfully complicated, think again. Director Curt Johnson, Oscar-winning producer of the 2002 short Thoth, stirs a whirlwind of history, opinions, and first-person footage that's the most accessible, thorough chronicle of animal rights ever put to film.

Knocked Up Review

Essential
What separates the films and television series of Judd Apatow from the rom-com epidemic (I feel that term is fair) is a singular word: growth. Apatow's works spend time with their characters, main and supporting, enough so that we can sincerely laugh with them and understand their decisions. It goes for his oeuvre overall as well: from the troubles of teenagers (Freaks & Geeks) to the pre-paranoia of college life (Undeclared) to the struggle of leaving your youth behind (The 40-Year-Old Virgin), Apatow builds, thematically, with each project. And that's how we finally come to Knocked Up.

Ben (Seth Rogen) holds onto drugs and buffoonery the way Andy in Virgin held onto childhood/teenage obsession. He spends his days smoking cannabis, making herpes jokes with his roommates and marking when celebrities get naked in films for a forthcoming website, FleshoftheStars.com. It's at a local club that he meets Alison (Katherine Heigl), a newly-promoted correspondent for the E! network. After a fumbling flirtation and a bevy of drinks, Ben and Alison return to her sister's guest house, willing and ready to make a mistake. That mistake blooms, after 8 weeks, into an unexpected pregnancy, forcing Ben into adulthood and Alison into a relationship that mirrors her sister Debbie's (Apatow's wife Leslie Mann) marriage to Pete (the reliable Paul Rudd).

Knocked Up Trailer

On the heels of 2005's blockbuster The 40-Year-Old Virgin, writer/director Judd Apatow again mines hilarity from the relatably human in a comedy about a one-night stand with unexpected consequences: Knocked Up. Katherine Heigl (Grey's Anatomy, Roswell) joins Virgin alums Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann for a comic look about the best thing that will ever ruin your best-laid plans: parenthood.

Bride Of Chucky Review

OK
Child's Play spoofs itself with this very tongue-in-cheek installment of the "Chucky" series. Standing out in more ways than one (ahem) is Jennifer Tilly as Chucky's love interest -- first as the human that brings him back from the dead, then as the doll that Chucky forces her soul into. Plenty of "witty" repartee among the cast, with none of the guilt that you're watching a serious attempt at making a horror flick.

The Ringer Review

Weak
A recent Associated Press story detailed how Peter and Bobby Farrelly gave the Special Olympics full script approval for The Ringer, their new comedy about a well-intentioned loser (Johnny Knoxville) who impersonates a mentally challenged person in order to win the Special Olympics and score some much-needed cash.

"I wanted this movie out there," Peter Farrelly told the AP. "It's very funny, but I also saw the potential for changing people's perceptions of people with intellectual disabilities."

Valentine Review

Bad
Well, here's something that will make you wish you'd stayed home to watch Survivor instead of shelling out money at the movies. Hell, Valentine, another entry into the yearly, winter horror crapfest, even makes Temptation Island look good.

What we've got here is your standard grade horror flick in the vein of Scream and Urban Legend, revolving around a mysterious killer devising a supposed revenge plot -- a geeky kid who got a Carrie pulled on him in 6th grade. My how the tables have turned! The bunch of girls who refused to dance with him are now getting killed, 13 years later. Has this nobody returned from obscurity to exact his revenge for having punch poured on him?

Valentine Review

Weak

The target-audience crowd at the night-before-release screening of "Valentine" -- a sluggish, labored slasher flick based on a much more complex suspense novel -- gave the movie an unequivocal review that needs no explanation when almost all of them loudly and resoundingly booed in unison as the end credits rolled.

They were booing mostly at the laughable, implausible "surprise" reveal of the real killer after an hour and a half of haphazard red herrings. But they might as well have been booing at the very idea that movie audiences will go see anything with a masked killer, a bloody kitchen knife and a random holiday in the title.

The killer here wears a creepy cherub mask, of course, and in the picture's one remotely clever scene he offs the movie's second worst actress (Jessica Cauffiel, "Urban Legends 2") by foregoing the knife in favor of a bow and arrow -- because he's Cupid, see? Apparently this is the kind of thing that makes brain-dead studio suits wet themselves in delight.
