Holmes recently revealed she isn't as ambitious as people may think

The 36-year-old star recently opened up to Elle Canada about the struggles of Hollywood, and why is more laid back than people may think.

"I think ambition is a wonderful thing, but I see a lot of people who might be a little more ambitious [than me]; I just do what I do and go home," she said. "I have a balanced life. I like having different experiences, and I like being inspired."

Although it has been over a decade since Holmes starred as Joey Potter on the WB series 'Dawson's Creek,' she still hasn't totally detached herself from the role that made her famous.

"I don't know if I have moved past it, but I don't really care," she explained of her character on the teen drama. "I had a ball doing it, and it's really nice to be a part of something that did affect people."

But opportunities like 'Dawson's Creek' don't occur very often in the entertainment industry, Holmes noted. "It's a very hard business," the single mother of 8-year-old daughter Suri, whom she shares with ex-husband Tom Cruise, added. "You have to work hard every day and hope for the best. Sometimes offers are flying in, and sometimes they're not."

However, Holmes is preparing to make her directorial debut with the drama 'All We Had,' in which she will also star. "There aren't as many movies being made, period, so the challenge is to create projects for yourself," she said of her new project.
