Katy Perry has expressed her sympathy for the man who was recently revealed in an episode of ‘Catfish’ to have thought he was dating the pop star for the past six years, as the result of an online scam.

A recent episode of ‘Catfish: The TV Show’, which exposes the truths behind elaborate and dangerous online dating hoaxes, focussed on a man from Tennessee, named Spencer Morrill, who believed he had been going out with Perry since 2010, only to be told by the show’s hosts that it wasn’t true.

According to Entertainment Tonight, the 31 year old performer appeared on Sirius XFM’s ‘Morning Mashup’ on Thursday (August 25th), and was asked if she had seen the episode in question. Perry replied that the whole incident was “very sad”.

“Yes, somebody sent me a link,” she revealed. “I didn't actually read through it, because I just think it's really unfortunate and very sad.”

“Yeah, you know, not everyone can be, but I think that, you know, my heart goes out to him, actually” she said, “because anybody that's been fooled like that or just you know… People have dreams, and people live in different parts of the world where not everything is as accessible.”

Morrill was so smitten with the woman he thought was Perry that he was in the process of getting an engagement ring manufactured from his grandmother’s emerald.

However, the ‘Catfish’ hosts explained to him that he had actually been communicating with a woman from England named Heather all along. The two of them had never actually met in person, and had spoken on the phone only once, communicating via a messaging app and by e-mail for more than half a decade.

“Like, we live on the coast, and you know, we get stuff in a way that some other people don't get, and so I feel bad for him,” Perry explained as to her reasons for having sympathy with Morrill. “And so I didn't really like to indulge in that, because my heart would die.”
