Photographs, obtained by TMZ, appear to show Perry hugging Mayer from behind as they stand and watch The Grateful Dead perform. Perry and Mayer were also spotted backstage at the show on Saturday but were not overly affectionate at that time. A source, speaking to People, claims they were amongst friends so not the ideal time to indulge in PDA.

"They were backstage being super sweet together – but not standing too close – in a big group of friends," the source said. "Someone handed her a tie-dyed rose. Katy was extremely polite, gracious and friendly."

Mayer has attended all five of The Grateful Dead’s farewell concerts, two in California and three in Chicago, last week and over the 4th July weekend. Perry joined him for the latter two in Chicago on 4th and 5th July.

On the Sunday, they even made it into the crowd in Soldier Field stadium without being spotted immediately. Sadly, they quickly drew attention and had to return backstage.

"They were holding hands backstage Sunday," the source told People. "For a short time, they were in the pit, but then the spotlight went on them, so John grabbed Katy's hand, pulled her out and they left."
