Katy Perry wants to use her fame and fortune for good and plans on doing so with her new role as a Unicef Goodwill Ambassador. On Tuesday, 3 December, Perry joined the ranks of David Beckham, Orlando Bloom, Jackie Chan, Mia Farrow and more in pledging her time to the charity, following a gala event held by the charity in New York City.

"Katy Perry is already a champion for children, and we look forward to hearing her 'roar' on behalf of UNICEF. We are delighted that she is joining us as UNICEF's newest Goodwill Ambassador and lending her remarkable voice to amplify the voices of children and young people around the world," UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake said at the 9th annual Snowflake Ball, held at Cipriani on Wall Street (via Ace Showbiz).

Perry addressed her appointment in a statement, describing her honour at being named a Goodwill Ambassador. She said, "I believe young people have the power to change their own lives, with our help. I am honored to join UNICEF as a Goodwill Ambassador, and committed to doing everything I can to help children and adolescents who come from such different backgrounds but want the same thing: a brighter future."

Upon joining the organization, Perry will set to work "to engage young people in speaking out about the issues they believe are most important in their own lives and enlisting them more directly in coming up with solutions to those challenges."

This isn't Perry's first association with the charity and earlier this year the 'Unconditionally' singer visited Madagascar in a bid to draw attention to the difficulties faced by the children in the country. In October this year, her hit single 'Roar' was used to soundtrack of a new PSA from Unicef aimed at promoting woman's achievements in third world countries. She has also been a prevalent voice of support for the people affected by typhoon Haiyan after it struck the Philippines in November.
