Black Mass Review

Good

For a biopic of a real-life person, this feels like an oddly standard mob thriller. It's the true story of Boston gangster James "Whitey" Bulger, and it's told with gritty filmmaking and robust performances. But there's very little about the movie that sets it apart, leaving it as yet another depiction of violent criminal ambition and betrayal. And by the end, it's difficult to escape the feeling that we've seen it all before.

It opens in 1975 South Boston, where Jimmy Bulger (Johnny Depp) runs the Irish mafia, while his brother Billy (Benedict Cumberbatch) is a senator. Their childhood friend John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) is an FBI agent who has asked for their help in taking down the rival Angiulo family, which Jimmy sees as a win-win situation: he'll get rid of the competition while avoiding jail himself. Over the next 10 years, Jimmy expands his operation dramatically, and he's not afraid to get his own hands dirty as he sorts out problems that are created by his sidekicks (including Rory Cochrane, Jesse Plemons and W. Earl Brown), all of whom are increasingly annoyed at his control-freak ways. But as Jimmy becomes even more notorious, the FBI boss (Kevin Bacon) pressures John to take him down.

The actors dive into their roles. Depp transforms himself physically into a prowling thug with terrifyingly piercing eyes. He may be a heartless killer, but he's also a caring family man. Opposite him, Edgerton has a trickier role as a federal agent who operates more like the gangster he'd rather be, casually ignoring the law to push his own agenda. In the sprawling supporting cast, only a few characters emerge memorably: Cumberbatch has a sparky presence, Cochrane offers some thoughtfulness, and Bacon gets to chomp on the scenery. Other roles are much briefer, especially the sidelined female characters.

Scream, Sleepy Hollow, Teen Wolf: What Is Tremors The Series With Kevin Bacon Going Up Against?

Kevin Bacon Tom Mison Tyler Posey

'Tremors' is set to see a TV re-boot more than ten years since the original series was cancelled after 13 episodes. This time it's different though, as Kevin Bacon is set to return to the small screen having originally starred in the 90s film franchise.

Kevin BaconKevin Bacon to reprise his role in 'Tremors'

It's just the latest addition to the ever growing list of television re-boots of classic horror films; some of which have turned out to be amazing and others we hope we never have to see again. This monster epic is still yet to find a network, but several are thought to be interested according to reports. If 'Tremors' was never your thing, however, here's a little reminder of some other films you might want to revisit on the small screen.

R.I.P.D. Review

Bad

The ingredients are all here, but this mash-up of Ghost with Men in Black is a painful misfire, neither funny nor engaging on any level. Even usually fine actors like Bridges and Bacon are left with nothing to do, while Reynolds strains to be the straight guy in a comedy that never raises a smile. And we can feel the filmmakers straining to crank up the wackiness at every turn.

Set in Boston, the story begins when young police detective Nick (Reynolds) refuses to join in a dirty deal proposed by his partner Bobby (Bacon), who then shoots him in cold blood. In the afterlife, Nick is recruited by a manager (Parker) into the Rest In Peace Department, protecting humanity from ghosts who have escaped judgement. His new partner is Wild West sheriff Roy (Bridges), who is reluctant to break the rules when Nick decides to investigate his own death to help protect his widow (Szostak) from Bobby's nefarious plan.

Yes, the plot is so in-grown that it never takes off, circling around a handful of characters even though it involves bringing about the end of humanity. Of course it does. These kinds of movies couldn't have stories that make any sense, and filmmakers can't resist making the ghosts goofy, rubbery cartoons rather than characters who are actually scary or interesting. The excessive use of digital effects makes the whole movie feel desperate as it strains for both laughs and teary emotion, but it gets neither.

When Leann Rimes and Eddie Cibrian fell in love on the set of Northern Lights, things were already looking a little bleak for the American actor. Here was a guy with the looks of a genuine Hollywood leading star - a guy who had served his time on U.S. television (Sunset Beach), like many A-listers before him, George Clooney, Kevin Bacon, etc. So why has Cibrian - who turned 40 last week - lost his way in the tangled world of Hollywood?

Eddie Cibrian LeAnn RimesEddie Cibrian [L] and LeAnn Rimes [R] At The ACM Music Awards

In 2006, Cibrian joined the cast of Fox show Vanished midway through the series. The show focused on the disappearance of the wife of a Georgia senator, which is revealed as being part of a wider conspiracy. The family of the missing woman, a pair of FBI agents and a journalist are drawn into the ever-evolving mystery - sounds alright doesn't it? Well, it wasn't. And it was cancelled after nine of the thirteen episodes. Yep, that means Fox deemed it wasn't even worth revealing where the wife of the Georgian senator ended up.

Stephen King's 'Under The Dome' "Could Be Just What We've Needed"

Stephen King Aisha Hinds Mike Vogel Kevin Bacon Rachelle Lefevre

Stephen King's novel Under the Dome, adapted into a miniseries, aired yesterday (June 25, 2013) in the US and has been met with favourable reviews. The horror writer's 2009 novel had a huge audience of 13.1 million viewers and is likely to continue filming until September. Owing to its initial popularity, it is possible CBS could fund further episodes.

The pilot episode introduces the audience to the bizarre Maine town of Chester's Mill, an area which is trapped in a bubble from which the residents cannot escape. With a healthy dose of a mysterious murder; a plane crash and many of the residents suffering convulsions it's definitely Stephen King's style.

Under The Dome is CBS' latest attempt to compete with rival networks who offer such series as The Following and Revolution. The cast of Under the Dome may not match up to the likes of Kevin Bacon (in The Following) but Joanne Ostrow of the Denver Post comments on the suitability of mixing 'veteran actors and fresh new faces'.

Kevin Bacon Apology, “My Bad” - Actor Gives Away 'The Following' Plot Twist

Kevin Bacon

Kevin Bacon’s apology was short but sweet. The Hollywood actor fell foul of the pitfalls of social media this week when he re-tweeted a Twitter comment between Jodi Gomes (a TV producer / director) and Kevin Williamson, the creator of The Following. Sadly, that tweet contained a rather major plot twist, which overseas viewers – who haven’t seen the show yet – would rather not have known. Getting caught up in the compliment and not thinking about who might be seeing the message, Bacon retweeted it. Much to the anguish of overseas fans. In response, Bacon posted a Vine video on his Twitter feed that simply showed him saying “My bad, my bad, my bad,” over and over again.

Warning folks: we’re going to reveal that plot twist, seeing as Bacon chucked it all over the internet anyway, so stop reading if you’ve somehow managed to avoid the big disappointment thus far. In the tweet, Jodi wrote to Kevin “@kevinbacon is a murderer too! Nice twist." Bacon posted the video and also tweeted “To all the fans abroad and late watchers I'm truly sorry I retweeted a spoiler. I just wasn't thinking. Won't happen again. #MyBad."

The Following just got commissioned for a second season. Hopefully Bacon’s eager tweeting fingers will restrain from letting any more plot lines slip!

So, You're All Still Watching The Bachelor: 9.2 Million Tune In For Hometown Dates

the bachelor Kevin Bacon

ABC's the bachelor is showing no sign of slowing up, delivering a massive 9.2 million viewers for Monday's hometown dates episode. The show also reached a 3.0 rating for the first time this season, up 11 per cent from last week, which in turn was up 13 per cent from the week before. According to Entertainment Weekly, it's the best non-finale rating for The Bachelor in almost two years.

The viewing figures and ratings are surprising, given The Bachelor has been around for years with little changes to its format. Essentially, a guy is serenaded by a group of women, one of which he must choose to be his wife. Yep, that's it. But America is eating it up in huge helpings, and they want seconds. And thirds. And fourths.

Another network celebrating this week is Fox, with serial-killer thriller The Following jumping 17 per cent in the ratings. The much discussed series, starring Kevin Bacon, had delivered worrying figures the previous week but bounced back with aplomb. So there critics.

Kissing Kevin Bacon: The Following Co-Star James Purefoy Tells All

Kevin Bacon James Purefoy

Kevin Bacon's The Following is currently one of the hottest shows on TV right now, with audiences lapping up to gorefest that is the new Fox thriller. In a recent interview with Vulture, Bacon's co-star James Purefoy discussed his role and the one scene in particular that has women all over going green with envy.

Purefoy, who plays killer Joe Carroll, questioned why the subject of violence in the media is such a heavily discussed topic, citing Shakespeare's King Lear and Titus Andronicus as some of the most gruesome examples he could think of. He said: "I'm surprised that in a society, in a culture that's been watching violence on film, television, and stage for two and a half thousand years, anyone brings it up anymore."

As for his kiss with Bacon, James took the whole thing very lightheartedly, saying, "Yeah, I just remember his tongue flicking gently into my mouth. So forward of him. And in front of all those people. I thought what we had was private." If that kind of description doesn't get ladies swooning then who knows what will.

The Following - Is Kevin Bacon's New Crime Drama Worth Following? Review Roundup

Kevin Bacon

Following what seemed like months of Pro Kevin Bacon publicity, with Google introducing a geeky side project to determine Bacon Numbers - a way of finding out how far removed someone is from the well-travelled actor, and his appearance on EE's adverts, championing their new 4G mobile data network, his new show The Following finally hit TV screens last night.

The ratings have secured his agent a job for the next year at least; the high numbers will have something to do with Bacon's increased on-screen and internet exposure, resulting in strong figures, but now it's up to the integrity of the show; the writing and acting to ensure those numbers remain strong.

Most of the reviews have generally been favourable, and the show has more or less gone down well. The Star praise the casting of the show, saying it sets it apart from the myriad serial killer dramas out there. "The Following is, for what it is, great TV," says their review. "Two things set The Following apart, and both involve casting. First and foremost, there is its star, Kevin Bacon, an accomplished and prolific movie character actor in his first series, following the path of wife Kyra Sedgewick and The Closer."

Sizzling Kevin Bacon Performance In New Show 'The Following'

Kevin Bacon

The overall reviews have been mixed, but Kevin Bacon’s role in The Following has been widely praised by critics appraising the new Fox series, the star finding a much more enjoyable niche on TV other than irritating EE adverts on British television.

The show sees Bacon play FBI agent Ryan Hardy, charged with bringing down a serial killer – played by James Purefoy – who he’s already previously put in prison. Since then he’s amassed a social network of like minded killers, who’ve been doing his bidding and ultimately saved him from death row. A bit like Lord Voldemort then really, though his prison was generally having to wander around half-dead than any actual physical prison. Anyway, the reviews have been good for Bacon, with the first episode of the season airing last night (January 21, 2013). USA Today comments “Some plot twists seem implausible at best, others are overdone or gratuitous. But some implausibility comes with the horror/suspense genre, and there's no question [producer Kevin] Williamson has mastered it - just as there's no question that the match of wills between the wounded Bacon and malevolent Purefoy is exceedingly well played.”

Entertainment Weekly meanwhile commented “Both Bacon and Purefoy are so intensely earnest, The Following quickly supersedes its patent Silence of the Lambs setup.” Many of the negative reviews criticized the show’s gratuitous use of gore, but even the New York Post – in its own mediocre review – had to admit “There are twists and turns a-plenty, and Bacon and Purefoy are so good they make up for the silliness - if not the gratuitous gore.”

Is 'The Following' Too Violent? Kevin Bacon Doesn't Think So

Kevin Bacon James Purefoy Natalie Zea

Kevin Bacon has been forced to echo the remarks of Fox chief Kevin Reilly by insisting his new show The Following does not glorify violence. The new series - which premieres in the U.S. tonight (January 21, 2013) -follows Bacon's character, retired FBI agent Ryan Hardy who is pulled back into service to capture an escaped serial killer.

"I don't think it's too violent for everybody," Bacon told Vulture. "Here's the thing: I've done a lot of different kinds of movies, played a lot of different kinds of parts. I was in the very first Friday the 13th. I've been in silly movies and romantic movies and historic movies. My focus is to play the part with as much honesty and integrity as I can and to explore what I want to explore as an actor." Wise words from the Hollywood veteran, though Bacon says he was initially drawn to The Following for its high stakes premise, "I started to realise that the shows that I was watching - Breaking Bad, Homeland, The Killing, Game of Thrones - they're all really life-and-death situations, so I knew that was something I'd want."

The new series also stars James Purefoy and Natalie Zea. Early reviews have been favourable, with Entertainment Weekly's Ken Tucker saying, "Both Bacon and Purefoy are so intensely earnest, The Following quickly supersedes its patent Silence of the Lambs setup." Variety's Brian Lowry said, "There's no pulling punches, and exec producer Kevin Williamson delivers a full-throttle ride that, four episodes in, proves twisty, unpredictable and tense."

Taking Chance Review

Excellent
Military reverence has long been one of the classic movie themes, to the point that it is now one of the most frequently mishandled subjects. It is difficult to make a soldier movie that avoids formulaic sentimentality and traditional heroism to the sound of a bugle call. Even more difficult is to make a military film that uncovers something most audiences have never seen, to open viewers up to the intimate unknown. Taking Chance successfully does both; it dissects minute military details that take place far away from the battlefield and exposes us to procedures that both fascinate and enlighten. It is quiet, engaging, and surprisingly affecting.

The film is unique in its keen attention to the minutiae of the U.S. military's body transfer process. Taking Chance is almost exclusively interested in the power of ambiguous observation. Sure, there is a story with a beginning, middle, and end, but narrative isn't necessarily the film's foremost preoccupation; this is a movie that thrives on intimate characterization and quiet scrutiny.

Beauty Shop Review

Weak
Television shows spin-off characters all the time - Matt LeBlanc leaves Friends for Joey and Cheers gives way to Frasier. Not so in movies, where producers frequently tease similar spin-offs but rarely make the big-budget steps to actually get these projects off the ground. For every Elektra, for example, there are promised X-Men franchises waiting to be built around Wolverine and Magneto.

Bucking the odds, MGM's Beauty Shop spins off from the successful Barbershop comedies, taking Queen Latifah's sassy stylist Gina Norris from the second installment and setting her up in a potential franchise all her own.

Sleepers Review

Excellent
How on earth did Kevin Bacon get top billing in a cast that includes Robert De Niro, Dustin Hoffman, Brad Pitt, and Jason Patric -- just for starters? That's just one of the disturbing aspects of Sleepers (and I don't mean that in a bad way), Barry Levinson's new drama/thriller that finally redeems him for the idiocy of Disclosure and Toys.

Based on the extremely controversial novel, Sleepers tells what is purported to be a true story of revenge in Hell's Kitchen in New York City. Four early-teenaged friends (played as adults by Patric, Pitt, Ron Eldard, and Billy Crudup -- who I have to mention just because I like to say "Crudup") are sent to a juvenile center when a prank goes wrong and almost kills a bystander. The brutality that occurs in the center does not need to be expounded upon, but suffice it's very horrible, and that guard Sean Nokes (Bacon) is the baddest of the bad guys.

Mystic River Review

Weak
Around this time of year, select projects start entering theaters powered by an invisible yet completely tangible force known as Awards Buzz. Mystic River, Clint Eastwood's adaptation of Dennis Lehane's textured novel, enjoys such clout, and with good reason. For his 24th directorial effort, the Hollywood legend assembles an impressive cast and marries them to a hefty and literate screenplay by Oscar-winner Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential). Then, in typical Clint fashion, he challenges his actors to claw out from underneath his heavy-handed direction.

Some manage, but most do not, and River drowns in tedium and cumbersome symbolism as a result. The 73-year-old Eastwood remains a meat-and-potatoes filmmaker. He's not afraid to take chances when selecting material, but his no-nonsense approach regardless of the content dooms this and other projects to a static and mind-numbingly wearisome state.

Where The Truth Lies Review

OK
Where the Truth Lies casts such a uniquely seductive spell that it takes a good long while before you figure out that it's not, for the most part, very good. The film is a mystery, of sorts, but one in which you grow gradually more suspicious of the filmmakers, rather than any of the characters.

Adapting a novel by Rupert Holmes, writer-director Atom Egoyan (Ararat) guides the story of a reporter in the '70s digging for dirt on a defunct '50s comedy team Lanny and Vince (Kevin Bacon and Colin Firth, respectively). In doing so, he has created a fusion of noir mystery and showbiz tell-all, which explains why it's interesting even when it's not making much sense, and also why all of the women in both of the movie's eras look like femmes fatale.

Trapped Review

Terrible
When a screenwriter decides to write another, predictable ransom thriller, why is it always the attractive, rich families with mansions on lakes that become the hapless victims? In reality, stranger abductions hit all socio-economic groups, so why are the poor families in the movies immune? A more cynical take on the genre would find a meager family with such ransom obstacles.

In Trapped, the latest in this tiresome genre, the kidnappers' true motive is not greed, despite the fact that they request a ransom for good measure. Will Jennings (Stuart Townsend) is a successful anesthesiologist with a beautiful lakeshore home he shares with his gorgeous wife Karen (Charlize Theron) and their adorable little daughter Abby (Dakota Fanning). While Will is away at a medical conference, kidnappers Joe Hickey (Kevin Bacon) and Marvin Pool (Pruitt Taylor Vince) quietly break into the Jennings' home and take Abby. Marvin leaves with Abby and Joe stays behind with the irate Karen to guide her through his plan. Meanwhile, at the conference, Will meets up with a third accomplice in the kidnapping, Cheryl Hickey (Courtney Love) who holds him hostage in his hotel room.

Very Good
The most often-asked question I have gotten in my career as a film critic isn't how I see the movies. It isn't what I review for. It isn't how much do I make, or have I ever been blurbed. It's do I review porn. I smile at this, display a little bit of patience (a little bit more if the person who asks happens to be an attractive woman, and such a situation has happened more than once), and say that I don't. If they pester me with the question, I respond with a simple joke: "My main problem with porn is its lack of plot."

Although, quite honestly, I don't have a particular problem with porn (it just isn't in the regular canon of films to be reviewed, that's all), that simple joke often proves true. One-too-many guilty pleasure flicks have been bashed by me on the account that they do nothing other than serve as a generalized platform for commercializing sex without any other cinematic value. And, although I am willing to give points in such a B-or-C-grade film for casting a woman with certain... assets... that suit the part, I find myself unable to otherwise turn off the "critic's switch" within me to the point that I can be guiltlessly turned on by the images in front of me on the screen.

Weak

Apparently not wanting to call attention to the fact that it's releasing a emotionally exploitive child abduction B-movie thriller at a time when AMBER Alerts are being issued almost weekly, Warner Bros. sneaked "Trapped" into theaters this weekend without holding any advance screenings.

This practice is usually reserved for pictures the studios are embarrassed to have made at all ("Pluto Nash," anyone?). "Trapped" isn't as bad as all that, but it is a film that has to get stupid -- really stupid -- in order to resolve its plot.

A rehash of Mel Gibson's "Ransom" with younger, prettier parents fighting back against their child's kidnappers, the film stars the luscious Charlize Theron ("Sweet November") and darkly charming Stuart Townsend ("Queen of the Damned") as a rich, happy young couple with a lakefront, Architectural Digest home but without much credibility as parents to a pretty 6-year-old daughter (Dakota Fanning, "I Am Sam").
