'Get Hard' Is Another Bromance Movie For Kevin Hart

Kevin Hart Will Ferrell Josh Gad Ice Cube

For an actor who has said he will never play a gay character, Kevin Hart has certainly embraced the bromance, movies that use a romantic-comedy structure to explore an emotional friendship between two men.

Just this past January, Hart infamously said that he would turn down a gay role if it was offered to him. "It's not because I have any ill will or disrespect," he said. "It's because I don't think I'm really going to dive into that role 100 percent because of insecurities about myself trying to play that part. Does that make sense? Like, what I think people are going to think while I'm trying to do this is going to stop me from playing that part the way that I'm supposed to."

Get Hard, the new Warner Bros comedy starring Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart, doesn’t appear to have lived up to the promise of its hilarious trailer though maybe our expectations were a little too high in the first place – this isn’t a disaster anyhow.

Get Hard Review

Good

Audiences may be divided over whether this comedy crosses the line as it looks for laughs in racism and homophobia, but the cast and crew just manage to keep the movie's heart in the right place. At its core, this is another enjoyable bromance that uses cheap gags to keep the audience chuckling awkwardly. And even if the one joke requires a certain level of gay fear, the film has enough spark and personality to poke fun at what is clearly depicted as narrow-minded paranoia.

It opens in a ludicrously expansive Bel Air mansion, where naive investor James (Will Ferrell) lives with his shark-like fiancee Alissa (Alison Brie), daughter of his boss Martin (Craig T. Nelson). Then as he's performing a duet with John Mayer at his engagement party, the feds swoop in and arrest James for embezzlement. But his innocent plea is ignored, and the judge throws the book at him, sentencing him to 10 years at the notorious San Quentin Penitentiary. With 30 days before he has to report to jail, James hires his car valet Darnell (Kevin Hart) to toughen him up for life behind bars, assuming that because he's black Darnell must surely know something about prison life. Darnell needs the cash, so he plays along, turning to his gang-member cousin Russell (Tip "T.I." Harris) for some street cred.

The script adds some clever texture in Darnell's home life with his no-nonsense wife (Dickerson), who is bemused by the fact that her nice-guy husband is pretending to be a seasoned criminal. Like her, the audience is waiting for the sham to collapse hilariously around him, but the screenplay veers off in some unexpected directions that both increase the tension and push the humour closer to the edge. Even so, the movie's core issue is the gaping divide between obscene Westside wealth and the relative economic struggle in South Central. Although director Etan Cohen never takes any of this too seriously, milking every situation for maximum absurdity.

The Wedding Ringer Review

Very Good

An unapologetically silly movie that manages to hit the right notes, this free-wheeling comedy makes up for its corny premise with sharp writing and acting. And as it keeps the audience laughing, it's also quietly finding some rather intriguing things to say about masculinity in American society. Thankfully, preaching a message is never this film's intention. And both Kevin Hart and Josh Gad bring so much charm and energy to their roles that they instantly become a movie duo we'd like to see together again and again.

Gad plays Doug, the nervous groom preparing for his wedding to Gretchen (Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting), a girl far hotter than he ever imagined he'd get for a wife. But Doug has no friends who are willing to be his best man and groomsmen, so he turns to his wedding planner (Serricchio) for help getting in touch with an underground service that provides them. Enter Jimmy (Hart), the fast-talking, quick-thinking best man for hire who assembles a hilariously rag-tag group of "friends" as groomsmen. As they indulge in some condensed bonding so they can convince everyone they're best pals, these guys actually begin to have fun together. And Doug begins to hope that maybe this isn't just a professional partnership.

Yes, what we have here is a bromance between Doug and Jimmy, two friendless guys who discover that maybe together they can change their lives. Filmmaker Jeremy Garelick never tries to obscure the standard rom-com structure, and the simple plot is utterly predictable, but there are surprising currents of comedy and emotion running everywhere. Hart and Gad manage to bring out all kinds of riotous humour, underlying insecurities and general comic mayhem in each scene. Hart's cocky run-on dialogue is hilarious, and matched perfectly by Gad's gung-ho physicality. But even more intriguing are the darker layers beneath the silly surface. And everything is livened up by a raucously ridiculous supporting cast, including veterans Ken Howard and Mimi Rogers as Gretchen's too-intense parents and an underused Cloris Leachman as her bedraggled granny.

Ride Along Review

OK

There's a decent premise to this action-comedy, but the filmmakers can't be bothered to put in the effort to actually make it funny or exciting. Instead, they sit back and hope that the fast-talking Kevin Hart holds our interest. Thankfully, he's quite a lot of fun to watch, creating a likeable character out of an utter moron and generating a few good laughs along the way as he bounces off the other characters.

Hart plays Ben, a videogame addict who wants to spin his career as a school guard into a place at the Atlanta Police Academy. His sexy fiancee Angela (Sumpter) has a brother, James (Cube), who's an undercover detective and wants Ben to prove himself worthy of his sister. So he takes Ben on a ride-along, which he and his partners (Leguizamo and Callen) set up as a series of humiliations. Then Ben inadvertently discovers a few clues in their ongoing case to find mythical arms dealer Omar (Fishburne). And what started as a joke becomes rather a lot more explosive.

Yes, the film is packed with the usual fiery explosions and massive car chases punctuated by Hart's non-stop comedy patter. Ben is the standard cocky, annoying idiot who we know will become someone completely different by the end of the movie (see Beverly Hills Cop, Rush Hour, The Heat, et al). But this allows us to engage with Hart from the beginning, and he finds some sharp humour along the way. Cube, on the other hand, never remotely convinces as a hardened cop; we know he's a big softy. And poor Sumpter, virtually the only female on-screen, struggles to add spice to a thankless role that plays out exactly as the formula demands.

"The Lego Movie" Still Blocking All Competition At The Box Office

George Clooney Kevin Hart

The Lego Movie is still going strong, after three straight weekends at the top of the box office charts. Over the three-day period, the movie made $31,5 million, leaving the competition far behind. New releases 3 Days to Kill and Pompeii came in at Nos. 2 and 3 with $12.3 million and a disappointing $10 million, respectively. Compared to Lego, the numbers seem very low, but they’re fairly typical of the slow February box office.

People are still paying to see The Lego Movie, not so much anything else.

Robocop and The Monuments Men both saw significant drops this weekend, taking fourth and fifth place in the weekend charts. RoboCop made just $9.4 million, while the George Clooney-directed historical flick made just over $8 million on its third outing – still not a bad record for a February release.

Grudge Match Review

Good

It's a little annoying that this high-concept marketing project (Rocky vs Raging Bull!) is as entertaining as it is: we want to hate it, as tired actors are sending up their own faded images. But while the script never even tries to be something interesting, it at least gives the stars some engaging scenes to work with. And we can't help but cheer for them in the end.

The film stars with a bit of history (and digital trickery), as young bucks Henry "Razor" Sharp and Billy "The Kid" McDonnen (Stallone and De Niro) battle it out back in 1982. Local fans in Pittsburgh are divided between them and are hugely disappointed when, at the peak of their fame, Razor suddenly retires before a climactic rematch. Now some 30 years later, a young promoter (Hart) decides to finally get them back together in the ring. But this stirs up an old feud involving Kid's affair with Razor's wife Sally (Basinger), which resulted in a son BJ (Bernthal), who's now a father himself. Can these two men possibly work together to promote their epic grudge match?

Silly question. Of course they start off gruffly snarling at each other but eventually find the expected mutual respect. And that's about the extent of the acting required of these two iconic stars. Add some fast-talking comedy from Hart, veteran battiness from Arkin, steely femininity from Basinger and soulfulness from Bernthal and the film at least has a veneer of complexity. But aside from wondering whether the filmmakers will fudge the final match so no one loses (they don't), there isn't much to worry about.

Grudge Match: Robert De Niro Versus Sly Stallone - But Who Wins? [Trailer]

Sylvester Stallone Robert De Niro Kevin Hart Alan Arkin

It's one of those silly hypothetical pop culture questions isn't it? Who'd win in a fight between Rocky and Jake LaMotta? Sylvester Stallone's Philadelphia brawler, or Robert De Niro's swashbuckling middleweight? The Italian Stallion or The Bronx Bull? Well, we get to find out. Sort of.

Peter Segal's new movie Grudge Match follows the story of Henry 'Razor' Sharp and Billy 'The Kid' McDonnen, two former boxers who were at the top of their profession. Both Pittsburgh residents, Henry and Bill met in the ring on a number of occasions and had beaten each other an equal amount of times. In other words, everyone's ready for a decider.

Critics may have universally panned Adam Sandler's latest comedic contribution yet it's somehow managed to beat the other new release, Pacific Rim, in the US Weekend Box Office (12th-14th July). Despicable Me 2 topped the Box Office charts for the second week in a row.

Ice Cube And Kevin Hart Star In Ride Along [Trailer]

Kevin Hart Ice Cube

Kevin Hart’s stand up DVD, Let Me Explain is out, and with it came a special trailer for his upcoming movie Ride Along. The trailer sees him try and win over James (Ice Cube) so he can prove that he’s worthy of Angela (Tika Sumpter) who is Ice Cube’s (James's) sister. Oh just watch the trailer.

Kevin HartHart stars in the new comedy, Ride Along

So, the only way Ben Barber (played by Hart) can get the acceptance of James is if he embarks on and completes a 24-hour patrol duty. Think of this as a buddy movie with a twist, with the twist being: they’re not buddies, more enemies with one guy trying to be buddies. You understand what’s going on; it’s conducive to more comedy.

Ben is a high-school security who only wants one thing in his life; to marry his beautiful girlfriend Angela. However, that proves to be less than easy when Angela's tough and intimidating cop brother James has less respect for him than the criminals he pursues. When Ben gets accepted into the police academy, he thinks he has James' blessing in the bag, but James has other ideas; he'll let Ben marry his sister if he proves he's worthy of her by joining him on his next shift in the world of car chases, guns and ruthless fights. Initially confident he'll do well in proving himself, Ben finds it a shock to his system as he has never even held a gun before let alone fired one.

'Ride Along' is a brilliant action comedy  that's deep down all about love, family and acceptance. Directed by Tim Story ('Fantastic Four', 'Think Like a Man'), the movie has been written by a large collaboration of Greg Coolidge ('Employee of the Month'), Steve Faber and Bob Fisher ('Wedding Crashers', 'We're the Millers'), Phil Hay  and Matt Manfredi ('The Tuxedo', 'Clash of the Titans') and Jason Mantzoukas ('Off Duty'). It is set for release in the US on January 17th 2014.
