Kevin Smith has announced there will be a sequel to Mallrats. Mallrats, the 1995 romantic comedy which starred Smith, Ben Affleck, Jason Lee, Shannen Doherty and Jeremy London, was a prequel to the 1994 film Clerks. The films both flopped at the box office but have since achieved cult status.

Smith also announced shooting for Clerks III would begin next month and he revealed the production schedule for two new films, Hit Somebody and Moose Jaws.  Smith made the announcement via Twitter on Thursday (12th March). 'We shoot CLERKS III in May. HIT SOMEBODY shoots September to Christmas. Then in Feb 2016, we do MOOSE JAWS. But after that? I smell a rat...' 44-year-old Smith wrote.

He later confirmed the 'rat' in question was indeed a sequel to Mallrats. "It's half scripted right now and we're pulling our loot together. We've got up until the beginning of 2016. By the time we get to May 2016, we're going to be shooting," Smith said whilst speaking to Tucson radio station, Rock 102 KFMA (via Variety).

Smith's last film was Tusk, a horror road trip movie, was released in 2014. Its sequel is due to be released later this year. In a longer version of his announcement posted on Facebook, Smith said he had considered retiring after Clerks III but, as he has now fully booked up the next two years, it doesn't seem as though the end is in sight.
