Kid Rock has axed plans to attend the Detroit Music Awards on Friday (29Apr16) as he continues to mourn the death of his personal assistant.
The rap rocker, 45, was set to receive the Distinguished Achievement Award from city mayor Mike Duggan at the 25th anniversary of the Michigan ceremony, put he has decided to postpone his appearance until next year (17) so he can honour his promise to deliver the body of his 30-year-old pal Mike Sacha to his family.
Sacha was killed in an ATV accident in the early hours of Monday (25Apr16) following a barbecue party at Kid Rock's Whites Creek estate in Nashville, Tennessee. Reports suggest he lost control of the vehicle on his way back to the property after helping to transport guests from the main house to an Uber cab waiting at the driveway.
Rock, who found Sacha's body hours later on Monday morning, took to his website to share his grief in an emotional post.
"I am beyond devastated to report that my personal assistant Mike Sacha passed away today in an ATV accident here in Nashville," he wrote. "He was a member of our family and one of the greatest young men I have ever had the pleasure to not only work with, but also to become friends with. I know I speak for us all in sharing my deepest condolences to his family. I can not imagine how they must feel. Myself, the band, our family, friends and co-workers are devastated over this loss."
Rock added that he was cancelling plans to travel to Michigan on Tuesday (26Apr16) so he could stay with Sacha's body "until I can bring him home to his family".
As a result, the singer has since also pulled out of the Detroit Music Awards.
A statement issued by awards show bosses reads: "We offer our condolences to the family of Mike Sacha and to Kid Rock and his organization at this terrible time.
"We certainly understand and agree that this is not the right time for a celebration. The Distinguished Achievement Award would only be a reminder of this week's tragedy rather than a commemoration of a significant career as an artist and humanitarian. We look forward to presenting the award some time in the future when it can be a positive, celebratory experience. We wish everyone peace and our best wishes."
