Maverick director QUENTIN TARANTINO shocked movie bosses at the CANNES FILM FESTIVAL - by claiming pirate copies of films are not always a bad thing during an anti-piracy conference.

The Kill Bill filmmaker - who is jury president at the prestigious French event - is pleased his 1994 classic Pulp Fiction is available as a bootleg in China, because otherwise citizens in the communist country would never get to see the film.

Speaking on Tuesday (11MAY04), the day before the event officially opened, Tarantino told a surprised audience, "I would be a liar if I was to say, across the board, no piracy."
