The Two Faces Of January Review

Excellent

This sun-drenched thriller is much more than a pretty picture: it's also a slow-burning story about moral compromises that worms its way under the skin. Based on a Patricia Highsmith novel, there are clear parallels to The Talented Mr. Ripley as three characters circle around each other and all kinds of Hitchcockian subtext gurgles around them.

Set in 1962, the plot opens with Chester and Colette (Viggo Mortensen and Kirsten Dunst) on a romantic holiday in Athens, where they meet slightly too-helpful American tour guide Rydal (Oscar Isaac). He's already wooing one rich young tourist (Daisy Bevan) and soon locks eyes on Colette. But it's Chester he becomes entangled with, when a private eye (David Warshofsky) turns up trying to reclaim cash Chester stole from a client. So Rydal helps Chester and Colette flee to Crete and, while they wait for a plan to develop, Chester becomes convinced that Rydal and Colette are having an affair.

Writer-director Hossein Amini has already proven himself as a skilled writer of innuendo-filled dialogue (see Drive or The Wings of the Dove), and here he shows a remarkable eye for setting. It helps to have ace cinematographer Marcel Zyskind and composer Alberto Iglesias adding their considerable skills to the mix. The film looks utterly gorgeous, providing plenty of glaring sunlight and murky shadows in which Mortensen, Dunst and Isaac can bring their characters to vivid life. Every scene bursts with suggestiveness, as the inter-relationships between these three people shift unnervingly.

The Two Faces Of January - Trailer & Clip

Chester MacFarland is a wealthy businessman whose business ventures are often far from lawful. During a vacation to Athens, Greece with his wife Colette, the pair meet a handsome young man named Rydal who works as a tour guide and earns extra cash through elaborate scams. After dining with the couple, Rydal returns to their hotel, but Chester is thrust into disaster when he is forced to defend himself from an armed man who had been on the end of one of his dodgy dealings. Chester persuades Rydal to move the unconscious body, but he soon finds himself trapped in Chester's criminal world with no escape. To make matters worse, he is becoming increasingly enchanted by the highly fragile Colette and, with her accepting his offers of comfort as the trio go on the run, there's only so much jealously Chester can take.

Set in the early sixties, crime thriller 'The Two Faces Of January' sees a tense story of entrapment, jealousy and suspicion. Directed and written by Hossein Amini (writer of '47 Ronin', 'Snow White and the Huntsman', 'Drive, 'Killshot), the movie is based on the 1964 novel of the same name by Patricia Highsmith. It is due for UK release on May 16th 2014.

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues - Clips

The legend of San Diego's Channel 4 news team may have long since dissolved over the years, but anchors Ron Burgundy, Brian Fantana, Brick Tamland and Champ Kind are set to return as part of a brand new 24-hour news channel. In a bid to innovate newsreading and once again come out on top over Ron's wife and rival Veronica, they decide that they're going to give viewers the news they want to hear rather than what they need to. As usual, their antics involve the usual scandal and debauchery, putting their careers and tarnished reputations once again in the media's line of fire. No matter though, as these co-workers have each other's backs all the way.

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues - International Trailer

The news used to be a noble profession before the likes of Ron Burgundy with his set of San Diego anchors Brian Fantana, Brick Tamland and Champ Kind took over. Now it's all about scandal, debauchery and vulgarity and Burgundy and his team are fighting hard to keep it that way. As per usual, they manage to get themselves in all kinds of trouble involving drugs in the studio, completely inappropriate news headlines, accidental racism (not to mention homophobia) and, of course, getting laid, and it's all in a bid to remain on top of the media as Ron fights his own battle to professionally tower over his wife and rival Veronica.

'Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues' is the even more hilarious sequel to 2004's 'Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy'. There's definitely more laughs to be had from everyone's favourite news readers as Judd Apatow ('The 40 Year Old Virgin', 'Knocked Up', 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall') returns to produce it. Director Adam McKay ('Step Brothers', 'The Other Guys', 'Talladega Nights') is also back alongside his co-writer and star Will Ferrell. It is set to feature in cinemas just in time for Christmas, premiering in theatres everywhere on December 20th 2013.

Anchorman 2 Trailer

Ron Burgundy, Brian Fantana, Brick Tamland and Champ Kind have now hit the eighties and things are a little different. The legendary San Diego news anchors are now embarking on a different project, as part of a 24 hour news channel, but now they have fresh competition in the form of a young, handsome and well-dressed fellow anchor. Ron continues to put himself in sticky situations, this time involving some awkward racism with his new girlfriend's family during a social occasion among many other things. Will their antics extend beyond their previous capers involving angry bears and mean bikers?  Or will the eighties bring with it a more streetwise news bunch? We doubt the latter.

The sequel to 2004's 'Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy' is set to hit our screens soon entitled 'Anchorman: The Legend Continues'. We'll likely be seeing yet more hijinks from one of Hollywood's favourite comedy casts as they return following at massive $85 million gross from the original movie. Produced again by Judd Apatow ('The 40 Year Old Virgin', 'Knocked Up', 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall'), Adam McKay ('Step Brothers', 'The Other Guys', 'Talladega Nights') also makes a return as director and co-writer alongside Will Ferrell. It is scheduled for release in the UK on December 20th 2013.

Ron Burgundy, Brian Fantana, Brick Tamland and Champ Kind return in this hilarious sequel to 2004's 'Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy' which saw Ron land himself a hot girlfriend, get attacked by a bear and have his dog thrown over a bridge by an angry biker. The legendary San Diego news anchors are doubtlessly set to entertain us with more news casting exploits which, according to the latest teaser trailer, will involve 'submachine guns and boobies' and getting 'stinky'. One thing's for sure, it's going to be funnier, weirder and much ruder.

Is Cannes Really Cannes Without Lars Von Trier's 'Nymphomaniac'?

Lars Von Trier Charlotte Gainsbourg Kirsten Dunst Willem Dafoe Shia LaBeouf

Lars Von TrierA Still From Lars Von Trier's Controversial New Movie 'Nymphomaniac'

In 2011, Lars Von Trier was the undisputed headline maker at the Cannes Film Festival, though for all the reasons. "What can I say, I understand Hitler. I think he did his wrong things ... but I understand the man," the Danish filmmaker said at a press conference for his movie Melancholia, as Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg looked for the nearest hole to swallow them up. On the occasion, Von Trier was regarded persona non grata and was essentially banished from the festival.

Now, two years later, he has another controversial movie to promote - Nymphomaniac with Gainsbourg, Jamie Bell, Shia LaBeouf and Willem Dafoe - though there is no room for the movie at Cannes. Instead it premieres four days after the festival ends, in Denmark. According to Fox, Von Trier is not banned from the Cannes and simply missed the cut-off submission date for his movie to screen there. The Guardian's critic Xan Brooks argued that Cannes without the filmmaker is simply not the same - and the blustery Riviera weather has done little to make stars, critics and filmmakers feel at home. "He transgressed and was punished and the scars, it seems, have yet to fully heal," Brooks wrote. "But Cannes and Von Trier need each other."

For Kirsten Dunst, Kissing Brad Pitt Was Disgusting

Kirsten Dunst Brad Pitt

We don’t think it would be a stretch to suggest that most women would love a little kiss with Brad Pitt – he’s a perennial Hollywood hunk after all. But when you’re 10-years old, that kiss might take on a different meaning.

Kirsten Dunst was the 10-year-old kisser of Pitt, 20 years ago. "It was just a peck," she says of the kiss, which occurred in the 1994 film, Interview With The Vampire, in which she starred alongside Pitt and Tom Cruise. "I remember Brad would watch lots of Real World episodes," she recalls to Bullet Magazine. "He had this long hair. He was just a hippie-ish cool dude. Everyone at the time was like, 'You're so lucky you kissed Brad Pitt,' but I thought it was disgusting. I didn't kiss anyone else until I was 16, I think. I was a late bloomer." This isn’t the first time Dunst has spoken of that now famous kiss. She explained back in 1998 when her career was coming into full swing, "Kissing Brad was so uncomfortable for me. I remember saying in interviews that I thought it was gross, that Brad had cooties. I mean, I was 10".

Upside Down's Stunning Visuals Don't Quite Make Up For Plot Holes

Kirsten Dunst

Upside Down is a tale of love between two opposing worlds, pushed together. Not in the "Wherefore art thou, Romeo?" kind of way, the movie actually means two worlds, opposite gravity pulls, he walks on the floor, she hangs from the ceiling kind of thing. Naturally, it's all a big metaphor for social stratification and the ever-present class divide, as so many films have been trying to do lately. Is it any good though?

Everyone seems to agree that the imagery of Upside Down is stunning (if heavily on the blue side) and the visual landscape of director Juan Solanas is certainly immersive. However, where the film falls apart is the script. Upside Down is littered with plot holes and continuity errors and even with the appropriate suspension of disbelief, the pseudo-scientific aspects just don't hold any water.

Additionally, while you can tell from the onset that this flick is going to be heavy on the social commentary, the way that it's served up is so heavy and offputting, it just leaves a bad taste in your mouth. The thing that lifts up this film (no pun intended) is Kristen Dunst's acting.

Adam lives in the only solar system that has two twin planets with opposite gravitational pulls. The Down world is the poorer, underclass world that resides below the Up world; a upper class, corporate world for the wealthy. It is forbidden for anyone to venture to one of the other worlds but since he was a child, Adam has visited a high mountain that gets him as close to Up as possible. It is there he meets a girl, Eden, who he becomes romantically involved with; the pair of them attempting contact by climbing to each other but Adam is shot by officials and Eden falls to her apparent death. However, Adam soon learns that she is alive and well and uses a number of methods to gain access to the Up world to meet her again. However, their union proves less than easy as the law attempts to keep them as far apart as possible. But can their love conquer gravity?

'Upside Down' is the upcoming romance fantasy flick directed and written by Juan Solanas ('Jack Waltzer: On the Craft of Acting', 'Northeast'). It is a mind-blowing story that is due to be released in US cinemas on March 15th 2013.

Starring: Kirsten Dunst, Jim Sturgess, Agnieshka Wnorowska, Neil Napier, Jayne Heitmeyer, James Kidnie, Frank M. Ahearn, John Maclaren, Larry Day, Heidi Hawkins, Don Jordan, Holly O'Brien, Vincent Messina, Holden Wong, Jesse Sherman,

Hot Tickets! US Movie Releases: Will Tom Cruise Make Or Break 'Jack Reacher'? Is 'This Is 40' As Good As 'Knocked Up'?

Tom Cruise Judd Apatow Paul Rudd Melissa McCarthy Megan Fox Ewan McGregor Naomi Watts Kristen Stewart Amy Adams Sam Riley Viggo Mortensen Kirsten Dunst

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is riding high in the US box office charts (way higher than its nearest competitor, Rise of the Guardians) this week and it’s unlikely that will change, though there are at least two releases this weekend that have been causing a stir. Tom Cruise stars in Jack Reacher – the adaptation of the Lee Child novel and This Is 40, the new comedy from Judd Apatow; a sequel to the popular comedy Knocked Up.

Some fans of Lee Child’s novels questioned the decision to cast Tom Cruise in the title role of Jack Reacher. He was, after all, originally on board as a producer only but after reading the script, it seems, he decided he’d like to have a go at starring in the movie too. It looks as though the gamble has just about paid off, as long as you enter the movie theatre with the understanding that what you are about to see is very much A Tom Cruise Movie, with Tom Cruise in standard Tom Cruise “cool and calculating” mode, as described by Betsy Sharkey of Los Angeles Times.

So far, the reviews are just about erring on the side of positive, with an aggregate of 63% on Rotten Tomatoes. Let’s face it, Tom Cruise’s rep has hardly had an easy ride this year and this is hardly challenging new ground for the Mission Impossible star, who has frequented many a steely action thriller of late. However, many reviewers have surmised that really, it’s Cruise that makes this movie. “This is Cruise’s show. And he nails it,” says Peter Travers of Rolling Stone. One for the Cruise fans, then. Wherever you are.

On The Road Review

OK

Despite the skill behind and in front of the camera, a badly constructed script flattens this film version of Jack Kerouac's iconic 1957 novel. It's beautifully shot and sharply played by the starry ensemble cast, but the repetitive structure leaves the film with no forward momentum. Instead of a voyage of discovery, it feels like a lot of random, pointless wandering.

Thinly autobiographical, the story centres on the young New York writer Sal (Riley). He's drawn to the charismatic Dean (Moriarty), a charming rogue who's married to 16-year-old Marylou (Stewart) but is having an affair with Camille (Dunst) while seducing every other woman he meets. And quite a few men as well, including Sal's friend Carlo (Sturridge). All of them are writers and artists, hanging out in clouds of hash smoke as they drive back and forth across America in search of something to write about.

Of course, Sal finds this in Dean as their friendship ebbs and flows over several years. Since this is essentially Sal's story, it's rather odd that the film abandons him from time to time to follow someone else, leaping jarringly into another situation, often marked by Dean's sudden reappearance after yet another bit of roaming. So while we understand how everyone is held in Dean's magnetic orbit, we can't quite see the point of it all. Sal may be obsessed with his thoughts of Dean, but he seems strangely willing to abandon him time and time again. There isn't nearly enough of the scene-stealing costars like Mortensen, Adams and Buscemi. And frankly, it should be a crime to waste Moss (of Mad Men fame) in such a fragmented role.

Bachelorette Review

Good
It's easy to see this comical romp as Bridesmaids meets The Hangover, but there's a bit more to it than that. It's a genuinely silly film with a rather simple plot, as three women try to accomplish something urgent while impaired by alcohol, drugs and romance. But it's goofy enough to keep us laughing.

The trio in question are Dunst, Fisher and Caplan, high school friends who reunite in New York as bridesmaids for Becky (a cleverly against-type Wilson), a girl none of them ever really liked. On the night before the marriage, they're goofing around with Becky's rather large wedding dress, and they tear it. So now they have one long night to get it repaired. Along the way, they run into the stag night for Becky's groom (MacArthur) and his chucklehead friends (Scott, Marsden and Bornheimer).

OK
Did Batman & Robin teach us nothing?

Universally considered the worst superhero sequel ever, Joel Schumacher's bloated monstrosity temporarily derailed Warner's lucrative Dark Knight franchise when it tried in vain to fill gaping plot holes with a multitude of C-list villains and unnecessarily whiny sidekicks.
