Following the huge success of the first season, it’s been announced that Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons will be the headline stars of the second season of ‘Fargo’.

Director Noah Hawley’s adaptation of the Coen brothers’ 1996 movie of the same name was a big hit on FX earlier this year, scooping the Emmy award for outstanding miniseries, and was green-lit for a second season back in July.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the upcoming series is beginning shooting in Calgary in January, with the first of the ten episodes airing on FX in the autumn of 2015. The central characters from the first, Martin Freeman and Billy Bob Thornton, will not be returning.

We already knew from Hawley that the new series will revolve around events described by the character Molly Solverson’s father Lou (played by Keith Carradine in season one) in Sioux Falls, South Dakota when he was a state trooper in 1979. Secondarily, it will also take place in Luverne, Minnesota (the setting of the first), so what we’re getting is effectively a story within a story.

Kirsten Dunst will apparently play Peggy Blomquist, a beautician with failed dreams of Hollywood who winds up in a small town and struggles with her identity. Plemons will play her on-screen husband Ed, a butcher’s assistant who tries to be supportive of his wife.

Joel and Ethan Coen will participate as executive producers during filming. Many more casting announcements are expected in the near future, and you can place a reasonable bet that they’ll be big names in relatively small roles too. In the recent past, A-list names have been vying for places on series such as ‘True Detective’ and ‘Breaking Bad’.
