Part 'Gladiator,' part 'Game of Thrones,' part BBC docu-drama: it looks great.
The trailer has been released for 2014 historical drama Pompeii, giving a glimpse into the volcanic action and rippling Roman fight scenes we should expect next February.
Kit Harington Plays Milo, A Slave-Turned-Gladiator, In 'Pompeii.'
Set before, during and after the Earth-shattering Mount Vesuvius volcano eruption that took place in 79AD, leaving an entire city preserved in ash, Pompeii embellishes the well-known natural disaster with a passionate romance. Directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, the drama will follow the fictional slave-turned-gladiator Milo, played by Kit Harington, who must routinely fight opponents to the death in the brutal battlefield of the coliseum.
Milo falls in love with Cassia (Emily Browning), the daughter of a wealthy merchant, but is heart-broken to discover that she has been forced into an engagement with a corrupt Roman senator. As Mount Vesuvius erupts, wreaking havoc upon the city, Milo must fight to escape the binds of the arena to save his true love whilst the one-proud city crumbles around them.

Kiefer Sutherland, Mad Men's Jared Harris and Cult's Jessica Lucas also star in this impressive-looking historical epic. Of course, with Harington in the film, Pompeii is bound to take on a flavour of hit fantasy drama Game of Thrones with shirtless warriors, an undercurrent of sex and a more brutal look at history; not to mention a rather similar-sounding soundtrack if the trailer is anything to go by.
Pompeii walks a well-trodden path of Roman dramas and documentary-style biographies, a seeming mainstay for broadcasters like the BBC, which only fuels our fascination with the eternally preserved ruins. Hell, even Doctor Who has had a crack at recreating the formidable eruption.
There's nothing to suggest that Pompeii will do anything wildly different to its leagues of forebearers but for those who don't want to be swamped with historical facts and figures and fancy a bit of a romance alongside their natural disasters, the movie will be a sure draw.
Pompeii will be released on the 21st February 2014.
