The upcoming documentary about Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain on HBO is to be accompanied by book, which will explore in greater detail what the film covers.

'Montage of Heck', a documentary about Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, will be released in May

Both the film and book will be entitled ‘Montage of Heck’, a name taken from a mixtape that Cobain made and which was shared widely online last year. The tracklisting features clips from The Beatles, The Monkees, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, The Jackson Five and many more, which gave an insight into the widely divergent influences that made up Cobain’s songwriting.

The documentary, directed by Brett Morgen and overseen by the singer’s daughter Frances Bean Cobain, will be broadcast on HBO in May, with copies arriving in British cinemas shortly afterwards. It’s due to make its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival later this month.

Earlier this week, Morgen revealed that Cobain’s widow Courtney Love had been extremely co-operative, and had given him “the keys to this kingdom and final cut of the film”. This would seem to dispel rumours circulating at the end of last year that Love was unhappy with her lack of influence over the project.

Earlier on Wednesday (January 14th), it was announced that controversial T-shirts whose fronts replicated Cobain’s suicide note have been withdrawn from sale on eBay and Etsy, after an online campaign by outraged Nirvana fans.

The petition’s organiser Julian Godlnez said that the shirts were “are a huge insult and slap to the face toward the legend Kurt Cobain himself, but as well as to all of his loved ones, his devoted fans, his legacy, and most importantly people around the world who currently suffer with mental illnesses of their own such as depression, anxiety and self-image dysphoria.”
