Lena Dunham Causes Controversy With 'Dog Or Jewish Boyfriend' Article

Lena Dunham Girls

Lena Dunham has caused controversy (once again) by penning an article for the New Yorker entitled 'Dog or Jewish Boyfriend'. Dunham challenges the reader to guess, out of 35 statements, whether they refer to her dog or her boyfriend. Dunham, who is herself Jewish, has been criticised for perpetuating a number of Jewish stereotypes.

'Appropriate Behaviour': Is Desiree Akhavan The New Lena Dunham?

Desiree Akhavan probably doesn't want you to call her the new Lena Dunham. In fact, she definitely doesn't want you to call her the next Lena Dunham. She says so. In the interview we're about to report on.

Patricia Arquette’s Oscars acceptance speech has set the world of social media alight in the last twenty four hours. After she used her time at the microphone to call for wage equality and equal rights for women, opinion has been polarised as to validity of her argument.

Reese Witherspoon took to the 2015 Oscars to promote a new feminist campaign #AskHerMore, a movement created to encourage reporters to put more career centric questions to female celebrities on the red carpet, rather than just asking about their designer gowns.

We think we have a new favourite celebrity feminist. If it wasn't enough for Witherspoon to take on such an inspiring feminine role in her latest movie 'Wild'; a film based on the memoirs of Cheryl Strayed, a first time hiker who walked 1,100 miles along the Pacific Crest Trail in a journey of self-discovery; she is now encouraging other actresses and celebrities to want more from their public appearances. The star took to Instagram with a list of questions she hoped to hear as she appeared on the red carpet at the Oscars, including 'What's the biggest risk you've taken that you feel has paid off?' and 'What accomplishment are you most proud of?'.

For Or Against Woody Allen? The Argument Splitting Hollywood

Woody Allen Lena Dunham Cate Blanchett

When Dylan Farrow published an open letter concerning her father, Woody Allen, reiterating her claims that he sexually abused her, Hollywood didn’t really know how to react. Allen was in the midst of praise for his latest movie Blue Jasmine, for which Cate Blanchett would go on to win the Oscar, and Allen’s career was at its zenith.

woody allen soon yi Woody Allen, seen here with his one time step-daughter, now wife, Soon-Yi, always maintains his innocence

Yet it wasn’t so easy to ignore Farrow’s claims this time round. The first time the accusations had been made she was a child and Allen had ultimately not been charged with any crime, despite the case being investigated by prosecutors. But this time there was a 28 year old woman making the claims, eloquently and clearly she once again repeated the accusations she had made against Allen as a child, this time with her own adult analysis.  Farrow asks in her letter “What if it had been your child, Cate Blanchett? Louis CK? Alec Baldwin? What if it had been you, Emma Stone? Or you, Scarlett Johansson? You knew me when I was a little girl, Diane Keaton. Have you forgotten me?”

Lena Dunham’s keynote speech at SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, reinforced precisely why we love her. The Critics Have Their Say On Lena Dunham Hosting 'Saturday Night Live'

Lena Dunham Jim Parsons

So, reviews for Lena Dunham’s stint hosting Saturday Night Live have been a very mixed bag. While her sitcom Girls has been met with international acclaim, Lena also has her fair share of critics out there. Particularly those who slam the 27 year old for her regular nudity on Girls and, well, pretty much every other appearance she does. Her SNL hosting job last Saturday to mark International Women’s Day was no exception.

The highlight for us, and many others who reviewed the sketch show, had to be the ‘Biblical Movie‘ sketch. Appearing as Eve, Lena characteristically wears no clothes, alongside SNL’s Taran Killam, who played Adam (Driver). Genius. The result was a smorgasbord of feminism, while Lena also customarily poked fun at herself (appearing surrounded by decimated apples).

Sex And The City Vs. Girls: Can We Compare The HBO Shows?

Lena Dunham Sarah Jessica Parker

Sex and the City meant glamour. Each week young women would tune in to watch Carrie hobble through New York donning a pair of skyscraper Manolo Blahnik shoes, climbing in and out of Big’s chauffeur driven car and working her way through the most eligible men in the city. The gal pals would meet over their Cosmopolitan cocktails to swap stories about their fabulous lives while the girls would drop what they were doing at a moment’s notice if each other were in need, because, in the immortal words of Carrie: “our girlfriends are our soulmates and guys are just people to have fun with”.

Sex and the City movie
Sex and the City remains one of the most popular shows of all time.

Fast forward ten years, since the end of the sitcom and we find ourselves with a new female oriented show to contend with SATC. Like Carrie, Girls' Hannah is a writer, living in New York City, figuring out life and love along with her girl friends who are of similar age. It would be easy to say that the 10 year age gap between Hannah and her pals and Carrie and hers can be held responsible for the fundamental differences in the two shows, but despite outward similarities they are still worlds apart.

Have Lena Dunham's Nude Scenes In GIRLS Redefined The 'Acceptable Female Body'?

Lena Dunham

As you may have gathered from my previous GIRLS article, I’m a big fan of the show. It’s a fairly accurate depiction of life for a modern 20-something, a life that the older generation can’t seem to grasp when they constantly ask why most of us are still unemployed or earning practically peanuts in our mid-twenties.

Lena Dunham Nudity There's been much debate over Lena Dunham's nudity in HBO hit show, GIRLS

Unlike HBO’s last female-centric hit show, Sex and the City, where each of the characters lived glamorous and envious lifestyles, attending constant nightclub openings wearing Manolo Blahnik’s and Dior, GIRLS is realistic. Sex and the City embodied the late 90‘s girl power ethos, revving women up to be either strong, sexual-predator-come-PR-guru, Samantha Jones or stick-thin, designer-wardrobe-wearing Carrie with her famous column advertised on the side of a New York bus. In comparison to the Cosmopolitan-swilling Sex and the City, GIRLS is like comfort food, reassuring but not always easy to digest.

GIRLS isn’t just a program. It’s become a reassurance that life isn’t necessarily going to be perfect in your mid-twenties, an idea that we all fostered throughout our turbulent teens.  Sure, the characters are (mostly) functioning human beings, but in their individual ways they are all dealing with problems which have become all too real for 20 somethings in the modern world.
