Ignore The Bookies, It Could Be Leonardo DiCaprio's Year At The Oscars

Leonardo Dicaprio Matthew Mcconaughey Christian Bale Academy Of Motion Pictures And Sciences Bruce Dern Chiwetel Ejiofor

Let's ignore the bookmakers' predictions for this Sunday's Oscars (March 2, 2014). The people who devise these odds have not seen the movies and base their prices on critics' reviews and public opinion of movies, actors and actresses. The McConnaissance - see Mud, Dallas Buyers Club, Wolf of Wall Street and True Detective - has left bookmakers quaking in their boots and reducing Matthew Mcconaughey's odds of winning best actor to 1/9. It's true that his portrayal of Ron Woodruff is probably the best of his career, though the Texan is way off being considered a nailed certainty on to win the award.

Leonardo DiCaprio Wolf of Wall StreetWill Jonah Hilll [L] Be Congratulating Leonardo Dicaprio [R] At The Oscars?

Consider the alternatives: we've got Chiwetel Ejiofor, the star of the finest movie of the year, Steve McQueen's 12 Years a Slave. History suggests that when a movie gains a momentum at the Oscars, it can rattle through the categories taking awards that it probably had no right to win. Nobody would complain should Ejiofor take best actor on Sunday anyway, though McConaughey and Leonardo DiCaprio could find themselves with little chance if the Academy has voted for 12 Years in the same way it took to The King's Speech and The Artist.

Despite Drug-Addled Belfort Role In 'Wolf', Leonardo DiCaprio Insists He's Never Taken Drugs

Leonardo Dicaprio

There was to be no method acting on this one. Leonardo Dicaprio may be in line for an Oscar for portraying the drug-addicted stockbroker Jordan Belfort in Martin Scorsese’s Wolf of Wall Street, but the star didn’t have a personal experience of drug use to fall back on because, well, he’s never taken drugs.

“That’s because I saw this stuff literally every day when I was 3 or 4 years old,” DiCaprio said. “So Hollywood was a walk in the park for me…. I’d go to parties and it was there and, yeah, there’s that temptation,” he explained to The Los Angeles Times.

Out Of The Furnace Review

Very Good

Coarse and not exactly subtle, this dark drama might disappoint viewers expecting a more traditional revenge thriller, but there's something more interesting going on here. And even though it starts at full volume and only gets more intense, the film is actually remarkably thoughtful and measured in its approach.

It's set in the Rust Belt, industrial Pennsylvania, where Russell (Bale) works in a steel mill and worries about his little brother Rodney (Affleck), who's deep in debt to a local bookie (Dafoe). Then a late-night car crash lands Russell in prison, and when he's released everything has changed. He has no job, his girlfriend (Saldana) is now dating the local sheriff (Whitaker), and Rodney is paying off his debts by fighting in bare-knuckle boxing matches. Even more perilous is the fact that all of this puts the brothers on a collision course with vicious local redneck Harlan (Harrelson), who has no intention of making their lives easier.

The film opens with a particularly brutal display of Harlan's menace, so we know what's coming. And as everything goes from bad to worse for our two heroes, the film feels almost aggressively harsh. Of course, Bale and Affleck are terrific as these damaged men whose fierce bond both helps and puts them into danger. And both actors let us see beneath the surface as their lives fall apart. In what could be the thankless ex-girlfriend role, Saldana has some surprisingly powerful moments. And Harrelson is a deeply terrifying force to reckon with.

The Grammy Awards may have dominated the entertainment news from the weekend but one story is refusing to die down. Jonah Hill and Leonardo Dicaprio has Saturday Night Live audiences in stitches last Saturday when the Wolf of Wall Street co-stars decided to re-enact the iconic prow scene from Titanic. "Honestly, my whole life feels like a dream come true right now," Hill said in his opening monologue. "Between 'Moneyball' and 'Wolf of Wall Street' and getting nominated for my second Academy Award, I just couldn't be more grateful."

Jonah Hill has made headlines recently after it was revealed he was paid just $60,000 for his Oscar-nominated role in The Wolf of Wall Street. Now, $60,000 is a lot of money to a lot of people, but in the world of Hollywood actors and their big pay cheques, Hill was paid pitance for his work. Still, he is not the only one to take a pay cut for the sake of the project paying them.

Jonah Hill
Jonah Hill is apparently nothing like his character in Donnie Azoff

Hill decided to take a pay cut, from the usual 6-7 figure digit he tends to receive, because he was so determined to get the part of Donnie Azoff so he could work with the director of the project, Martin Scorsese. By putting his dreams first and his bank account last, Hill has received his second Oscar nomination to date and has been roundly praised by critics for his role. What's more , Hill isn't alone in taking one for the team and opting out of a big pay cheque for the sake of the project he's appearing in.

Unlike Donnie Azoff, Jonah Hill Earned 'Minimum Wage' For 'Wolf Of Wall Street'

Jonah Hill Leonardo Dicaprio Martin Scorsese

Jonah Hill’s character in The Wolf of Wall Street – the ridiculous Donnie Azoff – is a man whose bad taste never outguns his monumental salary. Drugs, alcohol, £3,000 Armani suits and fast cars don’t dent the hefty bank balance he accumulated via stock market manipulation and the penny stock boiler room that was Stratton Oakmont.

But Hill’s real-life paystub paled in insignificance to Azoff’s in Scorsese’s controversial black comedy. The star was so enthusiastic to work with the legendary director, he took a huge pay cut to get the role. And when we say minimum wage, we’re talking about an actor’s minimum wage…

Nyong'o is picking up awards and new nominations for her supporting role alongside Chiwetel Ejiofor, Brad Pitt and Michael Fassbender at an alarming rate with the golden prize - an Oscar - comfortably within her reach.

'The Wolf Of Wall Street': Does Controversy Help?

Leonardo Dicaprio Martin Scorsese

Martin Scorsese is no stranger to controversy (see 1988's The Last Temptation of Christ), but you'd hardly expect a 71-year-old director to be accused of glorifying sex and drugs on-screen. And yet, stories of audience outcry have been swirling since his new movie The Wolf of Wall Street started screening for awards voters. Read our review of the movie here.

The Wolf Of Wall Street Review

Extraordinary

At age 71, Martin Scorsese proves with this riotous romp that he's one of the most energetic, audacious filmmakers working in America at the moment. And with his long-time 74-year-old editor Thelma Schoonmaker, he has created one of the most entertaining cautionary tales in recent memory. Not only does it highlight an unruly period in banking history, but it has a lot to say about where we are now.

This is the true story of Jordan Belfort (DiCaprio), who was 21 when he got his first job on Wall Street in the rough-and-tumble 1980s. Thanks to his illicit deals, he was a multi-millionaire within five years, tutored by a jaded veteran (McConaughey) and assisted by an enthusiastic novice (Hill). Along the way, he also swaps for a much more glamorous wife (Robbie), whose British aunt (Lumley) becomes part of his scam to stash his cash with a shady Swiss banker (Dujardin). But with an FBI agent (Chandler) on his trail, Jordan suspects that the high life can't go on forever.

At just under three hours long, the film sometimes feels like it is wallowing in the excessive sex and drugs along with these Wall Street criminals. But there's a jagged undercurrent to everything: all of this hedonism may look like fun, but someone is paying the price. The film is an often thrilling series of set-pieces that roll out in waves of comedy, tragedy and farce as these people play on the edge of an abyss. And it's great to see scenes play out in real time, with deep conversations, riotous comedy riffs and characters who are full of conflicting layers.

The Wolf Of Wall Street - Clips

It's a wild ride of drinking, drugs, debauchery and deception when the ambitious Jordan Belfort decides that he wants to be one of the rich kids. Starting out his stockbroker business in a small office with a handful of employees, his aims are simple; target only the richest people in the country. It isn't long before Belfort and his team find themselves with more money than they know what to do with and begin to live their lives manically high off the success. However, Belfort hasn't exactly been making what you'd call an honest living and pretty soon the secrets of his fraudulent profits and money laundering draws attention from the authorities. And not only that, his disregard for others' sufferings means he's got a lot more to lose than his beloved business.

'The Wolf of Wall Street' is a gritty white-collar crime drama based on the true story of Jordan Belfort, a former stockbroker who served 22 months in prison for his fraudulent activity in 1998 and subsequently wrote two memoirs entitled 'The Wolf of Wall Street' and 'Catching the Wolf of Wall Street'. The new movie has been directed by the Oscar winning Martin Scorsese ('Shutter Island', 'Goodfellas', 'The Departed') and written by multi-Primetime Emmy winning writer Terence Winter ('The Sopranos', 'Boardwalk Empire', 'Brooklyn Rules').

The Wolf Of Wall Street Trailer - Where Did Kanye West Come From?

Kanye West Leonardo Dicaprio Martin Scorsese

This is the kind of thing Kanye West has been talking about. Everybody does, apart from this person.

So in that sense, his song Black Skinhead’s inclusion on the trailer for the film, which features Leonardo Dicaprio, is no surprise. Leonardo DiCaprio Gets An Earful From Animal Rights Campaigners Over 'The Wolf Of Wall Street' Chimp

Wolf of Wall Street
The Wolf of Wall Street arrives in cinemas soon

Leonardo Dicaprio has been on the end of some rather scathing criticism from PETA and other animal rights organisations owing to a scene involving a chimpanzee in his upcoming movie The Wolf of Wall Street. The Martin Scorsese-directed black comedy is the latest in a long line of Hollywood films that unfairly exploit animals from an early age so that they may be used in films, PETA have argued, and they expected better from Leo.

In the film, DiCaprio drags a chimpanzee named Chance through a bustling office party in a scene that has greatly upset the animal rights community, not over what happens in the film, but for how the animal is treated behind the scenes. The true-to-life biopic of Wall Street broker Jordan Belfort has come under fire from animal rights groups for its use of the chimp, claiming "that chimpanzees are abused and taken from their mothers at an early age before being forced into Hollywood."

George Clooney 'Rant' Against Russell Crowe & Leonardo DiCaprio Explained By His Publicist

George Clooney Leonardo Dicaprio Russell Crowe

George Clooney has had to explain himself after being quoted with some not-so-nice words for two of Hollywood's leading men: Russell Crowe and Leonardo Dicaprio. The hunky actor became a talking point earlier this week after apparently bad mouthing Leo and his entourage, as well as reliving the feud started between himself and Crowe - sparked by Crowe in 2005 - and revealing that there is still bad blood between them.

George Clooney
George's comments were taken out of context

In the interview for Esquire magazine, the 52-year-old actor recalled playing a basketball game against Leo, and complained particularly about the way in which his friends behaved before and during it. After finding himself on the winning side of an 11-0 drubbing, Clooney told the glossy, “And the discrepancy between their game and how they talked about their game made me think of how important it is to have someone in your life to tell you what’s what. I’m not sure Leo has someone like that."

George Clooney Reveals Feud With Russell Crowe & Bad Mouths Leonardo DiCaprio In Latest Interview

George Clooney Russell Crowe Leonardo Dicaprio Ashton Kutcher Brad Pitt Bill Murray

George Clooney has moulded an image of himself as the nice guy around Hollywood, regularly pitching in on humanitarian projects around the world and hosting and attending fundraisers and the likes for example, but it turns out that Mr Nice has a few bad bones in his body too. In a no-holds-barred interview with Esquire for their December issue, the actor took some unexpected verbal shots at Russell Crowe and Leonardo Dicaprio.

Crowe and Clooney apparently have a long-standing feud, one that Crowe attempted to bring to an end, only for Clooney to laugh off his attempts at reconciliation. Their beef began when Crowe called the 52-year-old Clooney a "sellout" some years ago, with Clooney saying that he has shot down every attempt to win his favour since then.

Wolf Of Wall Street Trailer

Jordan Belfort started out his stockbroker business in a tiny office with a small group of people and had the intention of targeting only the richest people in America as their clientele. With such a small percentage of individuals lined up as hopeful patrons, their dreams of immense fortune and a life of luxury seemed embarrassingly unlikely. However, pretty soon the company starts to ooze more money than they can handle and it's parties, alcohol and women all round. Unfortunately, it soon becomes clear to everyone that what Belfort was doing to earn his fortune is not entirely legal and he risks his freedom and his wealthy lifestyle when the FBI get involved.

'The Wolf of Wall Street' is a white-collar crime drama based on the two memoirs by the real Belfort, who was jailed in 1998 for a string of fraudulent offences including money laundering. The autobiographies have since been translated into 18 different languages and now the Oscar winning Martin Scorsese ('Shutter Island', 'Goodfellas', 'The Departed') directs the screen adaptation which has been written by multi-Primetime Emmy winning writer Terence Winter ('The Sopranos', 'Boardwalk Empire', 'Brooklyn Rules'). The movie is set to be release on January 17th 2014.

Leonardo Dicaprio Martin Scorsese

Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street, starring Leonardo Dicaprio as the Wall Street broker and party boy Jordan Belfort, is to be released on December 25, 2013, after the legendary filmmaker delivered a shortened version of the film that was screened for Paramount chairman Brad Grey, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Fully financed by Red Granite, the drama has always been expected to play some part in this year's awards race, though Paramount's demand that Scorsese cut the original edit from 180 minutes to 165 minutes is a slight concern. Nevertheless, the studio appeared by buoyed by the changes.

'The Wolf Of Wall Street' Finally Gets Official Release Date & A New Trailer

Martin Scorsese Leonardo Dicaprio Jonah Hill

Thanks to various intervening forces, the release date of Martin Scorsese's next picture - the Leonardo Dicaprio-starring The Wolf of Wall Street - has been in contention for some time now. At first, it was due out on 15 November, but was pushed back for an unspecified period, with some estimates putting it as far back as spring 2014. Fortunately, we'll only have to wait just over a month longer to see the film, when it is released on 25 December.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount decided on the new date after heads at the company saw a shortened version of the film, with the running time cut from 180 minutes to 165 minutes. The studio bosses had initially put back the release in order to give director Scorsese ample time to trim away some of the fat, and he apparently unveiled the finished product this week. Content with how the film played out despite missing a few scenes, they decided to okay the film and set a 2013 release, which will also put it in contention for next years awards season.

She admitted that she was shocked to discover that he had moved on so quickly with Lively.

Runner Runner Review

Bad

Clearly something went horribly wrong as this thriller was being made, because despite a solid cast, gorgeous locations and an intriguing premise, the film is an incoherent mess. Sure, it looks achingly cool, but there isn't a single moment when the characters' motivations make any sense. And there's never a hint of suspense or danger.

It doesn't help that the set-up revolves around two of the least cinematic things on earth: finances and computers. Timberlake plays Princeton grad student Richie, who runs a gambling website to pay his tuition but loses his savings when another site cheats him. So he heads to Costa Rica to confront the online casino boss Ivan (Affleck). Impressed with his initiative, Ivan offers him a job, and soon Richie has more cash than he can possibly spend. But for some reason, all he wants is Ivan's colleague-girlfriend Rebecca (Arterton). Then a nosey FBI agent (Mackie) forces Richie to help him take Ivan down.

Director Fuhrman showed considerable promise with another renegade loner in The Lincoln Lawyer, but this film simply refuses to fill in enough of the gaps. Nothing that happens here is remotely convincing, as the characters are continually thrust into half-developed scenarios. Perhaps there's a more coherent longer version out there, because this one feels like it was edited with a machete. Even as a cautionary tale about the dangers of greed, this story has nothing relevant to say.

Leonardo DiCaprio To Get Under The Skin Of Infamous Historical Villain Rasputin For Upcoming Movie

Leonardo Dicaprio

Fresh off his promotional efforts for The Great Gatsby, Leonardo Dicaprio is on the way to taking another character part – this time as the Russian mystic Rasputin in the eponymous project, currently in development by Warner Bros. The project was pitched by Jason Hall, the writer behind such films as American Sniper, Deadline has learned exclusively.

It will tell the story of the man whose machinations earned him a place as a medic and then an advisor to the royal family of the Romanovs in Russia during the early 20th century. We know from recent experience that Leo is good at character acting, but, judging from his recent projects, he is still chasing that elusive Oscar. More importantly though, audiences will not only get to experience another piece of history onscreen, but also get to see DiCaprio in quite an impressive beard – an opportunity, which is not to be missed.

The project is apparently part of a long term commitment between Hall and WB, with the scribe having previously worked with the studio on American Sniper and now this project, which was, until recently unnamed, but was known to be in the works for a while. The Rasputin flick will be produced by Kevin McKormick, who will also be taking on American Sniper – it seems pretty clear at this point that we’re witnessing the advent of a powerhouse production team over at Warner.

Stars Head For The Stars: Justin Bieber Joins The Virgin Galactic Party

Justin Bieber Tom Hanks Leonardo Dicaprio Brad Pitt Angelina Jolie Ashton Kutcher Richard Branson Tom Cruise Paris Hilton Bryan Singer Stephen Hawking Jk Rowling

It is confirmed: pint-sized popstar Justin Bieber and manager Scooter Braun, are set to be blasted towards the real stars, out into space.

Tycoon Richard Branson, founder and chairman of travel, entertainment and lifestyle company, Virgin Group, was first to break the news on Twitter: "Great to hear @justinbieber & @scooterbraun are latest @virgingalactic future astronauts. Congrats, see you up there!" whilst a buzzing Bieber replied: "Let's shoot a music video in SPACE!!"

The 19-year old 'Baby' hitmaker could be fleeing planet Earth to escape from his growing list of shameful actions that have brought the wayward party-boy under media scrutiny, including leaving insensitive messages in the guestbook at Amsterdam's Anne Frank museum, abandoning his pet monkey, 'Mally', in Germany after she was confiscated at customs, arriving onstage two hours late at his concert in London, and threatening to "beat the f**k" out of a photographer. Space might just be the best place for the little reprobate then.

So, Why Did Leonardo DiCaprio Get Knocked Back By Cara Delevingne?

Leonardo Dicaprio Cara Delevingne Baz Luhrmann Gisele Bundchen Bar Refaeli Erin Heatherton Anne Vyalitsyna Eva Herzigova Rita Ora Martin Scorsese

Leonardo Dicaprio has certainly racked up an impressive number of supermodel girlfriends over the years, though British Burberry star Cara Delevingne isn't one of them. According to The Sun newspaper, Cara snubbed the Hollywood A-lister at the after-party of the Great Gatsby premiere at Cannes last week.

A source said: "Normally all Leo has to do is look at a girl and they fall at his feet. Though Cara was having none of it.He spent the night chasing after her and essentially she blew him out." The insider says the pair spoke for a while and eventually swapped numbers after Leo had invited her to a party back at his suite. "He tried every trick in the book and apparently kept lunging for her but she kept dodging them," said the source, "Everyone is howling at the fact she actually knocked back the biggest actor in the world. She thought he was too forward and too old."

DiCaprio - who stars as Jay Gatsby in Baz Luhrmann's reimagining of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel - has previously dated Gisele Bundchen, Bar Refaeli, Erin Heatherton, Anne Vyalitsyna and Eva Herzigova. Delevingne, who previously dated the folk-rock musician Jake Bugg, is said to be moving in with best pal Rita Ora in East London later this year.

Leonardo DiCaprio Space Trip Costs Decadent Man $1.5m – But It’s For Charity

Leonardo Dicaprio Cannes Film Festival

Cannes Film Festival may have been blighted of late by some criminal activity, but the glitz and the glamour have prevailed in a charity event that saw a man buy a trip to space with Leonardo Dicaprio for $1.5m.

Vasily Klyukin, 37, a Russian living in Monaco – and enjoying all the tax benefits that come with that - said he had always wanted to go into space. "I want to be a bit daring," Klyukin - who works in real estate and also bought a gold and diamond necklace for $517,000 - told Reuters. "I will have to give up smoking now for sure!" The money will go to amfAR, the Foundation for AIDS Research, and The Great Gatsby star will board a Virgin Galactic flight into space with a mystery guest; someone who was willing to spend $1.5m to be shot into space with him. Sound maybe a little bit weird? Nah. Actress Sharon Stone explained that the winning bidder would spend three days in training with DiCaprio in New Mexico bfore the trip. "You don't get to go to outer space every day with a handsome movie star," she explained.

This year’s Cannes has seen Leo’s film, The Great Gatbsy, directed by Baz Lurhmann, receive mixed reviews. It was already struggling before hand, having been handed a rare Cannes opening spot despite already opening elsewhere, but given that many were waiting for the spectacle of the Cannes showing, its deficiencies were highlighted further.

A Seat Beside Leonardo DiCaprio On Space Journey Sells For Millions

Leonardo Dicaprio Harvey Weinstein Richard Branson

A trip to space with Leonardo Dicaprio has been auctioned off for a magnificent 1.2 million euros which will be donated to the charity amfAR Cinema Against AIDS.

The lucky bidder has landed the chance to be seated next to 'The Great Gatsby' star aboard Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic fleet on an unforgettable trip to the stars. The prize, which was advertised as 'a once-in-a-lifetime trip to space with a mystery guest', was sold at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Cannes during a dinner/ auction organised by The Weinstein Company's Harvey Weinstein on Thursday night (May 23rd 2013) in benefit of the amfAR foundation. Two other seats on the same flight have been sold for a total of 1.8 million euros. After informing them of his star prize, Weinstein joked to the Hollywood Reporter that some wished he could be jetted off into the galaxy too. 'But only on a one-way ticket', he adds.

On Thursday, amfAR noted that the event brought in a spectacular $25 million; a stark contrast to their $11 million collection last year. But then, with prizes as enviable as a space holiday with the handsome DiCaprio, it's not surprising how much the event goers managed to cough up.

Leonardo DiCaprio's $1.6 Million Space Adventure

Leonardo Dicaprio Heidi Klum

Have you ever woken up an thought to yourself “I want to fly into space with Leonardo Dicaprio?” Let’s be honest, we all have and, at a charity auction at Cannes this week one lucky (and very, very rich soul) made that dream a reality. A bidder at the AmFAR Cinema Against AIDS gala shelled out $1.5 million for the opportunity to sit next to the Great Gatsby star on a Virgin Galactic flight into space. The package also includes the opportunity to spend three days training alongside DiCaprio in Mexico. Now if that isn’t an incentive to give to charity, we don’t know what is.

Interestingly enough, that wasn’t even the most expensive prize at the auction. Two other seats on the same shuttle went for $2.3 million, according to E!News. And then another $2.3 million went for an exclusive package to see DiCaprio’s new movie Wolf on Wall Street. And we complain about the local movie theater upping their prices!

Though the 2 million pricetag is sort of justified, considering that the package included two tickets to the premiere and afterparty of DiCaprio's upcoming drama 'Wolf on Wall Street' and an Oscar weekend that includes a room at the Beverly Hills Hotel, a Chopard watch, tickets to the Weinstein party and attending Elton John's annual viewing bash and Vanity Fair's party with Heidi Klum. That is definitely a long list of perks.

Tobey Maguire Morphs Into Gangster Mickey Mouse For The Cover Of German Magazine

Tobey Maguire Leonardo Dicaprio

You know how Tobey Maguire always plays the quiet, unassuming guy? The Great Gatsby, even if it was a great decision for Maguire’s career, only seems to have reaffirmed the stereotype. But recently, the actor has been stepping out of the shadow of bigger fish in Hollywood (cough, Leonardo Dicaprio, cough) to carve his own distinct path. Apparently, said path now includes a sort-of gangster image and knuckle dusters that spell out “CALI”. You know, because you always want to engrave your opponent’s face with your place of birth.

We are, of course, talking about Maguire’s recent, post-Gatsby shoot for German magazine Interview. Apart from the crisp white suit, it isn’t entirely clear how the shots are channeling the Gatsby theme, but they sure are funny. One of the snaps shows Maguire’s face superimposed on a bodybuilder’s body, while the cover shows him in the aforementioned white suit, sporting giant, Mickey Mouse-esque hands, The Daily Mail reports. It’s meant to be hilarious, apparently.

The Great Gatsby Review

Excellent

Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge) is the perfect director to take on F. Scott Fitzgerald's iconic novel about the American dream, simply because he's an expert at showing the emptiness of hyperactive excess. The film is a feast for the eye from start to finish, but it also eats away at us with its bleak story of people who live the high life even though it leaves them naggingly unsatisfied.

The tale is told by Nick (Maguire), trying to work through his life-changing summer in 1922 Long Island, where he rented a small cottage across the sound from his wealthy cousin Daisy (Mulligan), who is married to his college pal Tom (Edgerton), an all-American sportsman with an eye for other women. Next door to Nick's cottage is the vast mansion owned by reclusive millionaire Jay Gatsby (DiCaprio), who throws outrageously raucous parties for New York's celebrity class. But Nick realises that Jay only does this to catch the eye of Daisy, because he's still in love with her after a romance five years earlier. Now he wants to take her away from Tom, and he needs Nick's help.

It's tricky to know whether Luhrmann is celebrating Gatsby's luxuriant lifestyle or offering a cautionary tale about the emptiness of materialism. Obviously, the story is trying to do both, and Luhrmann fills the surfaces with decadent extravagance, filling the air with wafting fabric, buckets of glitter and exploding fireworks. Like a lavish 3D pop-up book, the party scenes are wildly over-the-top, as are smaller gatherings in opulent city flats or roaring open-top cars. These people's lives are so vacuous that they live at top speed, always in search of the next thrill. And it's difficult not to see Gatsby's earnest quest as just another greedy acquisition.

Currin's Naked Painting Of Golden Girls' Bea Arthur Sells For $2 Million

Bea Arthur Leonardo Dicaprio Golden Girls

John Currin's topless portrait of Golden Girls actress Bea Arthur has sold for $2 million at Christie's auction house in Manhattan. The 1991 creation aptly titled 'Bea Arthur Naked' captures the beloved television actress from the waist up and was imagined from a full-clothed photograph of Arthur.

Notes on the auction house's website describe the portrait as "nostalgic and repelling" and clearly somebody agreed on Wednesday evening (May 15, 2013). The piece of work has been the subject of intense controversy in the past, though things took on a strange new turn before the auction when social media editors at the Daily Beast were locked out of their Facebook accounts for posting a photo of the portrait, an action initially considered a violation of terms. In an article titled 'Bea's Arthur Boobs Got Us Booted From Facebook,' social media editor Brian Ries wrote, "For a crime that wasn't a crime. For a so-called offensive image that was an actual piece of art valued at roughly $2 million. Way to go, Facebook people."

Arthur, who died of cancer in 2009 aged 86, won Emmys for her roles in the 1970s and 80s television shows 'Maude' and 'Golden Girls.'

Leonardo DiCaprio Helps Raise Close To $39 Million At Art Auction

Leonardo Dicaprio

Leonardo Dicaprio is at it again, making everyone fall in love with him yet again, this time by raising an eye-watering amount for his own charity, which deals with environmental issues. The actor stood as a guest auctioneer at Christie’s in New York as the rich and famous bought and sold art all in the name of charity, at an event that took place a month ago but has been kept under wraps by the ever modest actor until now.

The 11th Hour Charity Auction was held on April 13, with DiCaprio the night's co-host with a Christie's regular, with a host of star guests in the audience to held raise some money, including Mark Ruffalo, Salma Hayek and Bradley Cooper. Organisers had first put together the plans to raise money for Leo's foundation, with an initial goal of $18 million set by organisers, who must have been overwhelmed by the actual amount raise - reported to be $38,827,000 (£25.6 million).

'The Great Gatsby' Opening Cannes Doesn't Seem Like Such A Good Idea Anymore

Cannes Film Festival Steven Spielberg Leonardo Dicaprio Michael Douglas Coen Brothers James Gray Joaquin Phoenix Alexander Payne

The 2013 Cannes Film Festival will open on Wednesday (May 15, 2013) with Baz Luhrmann's 3-D version of The Great Gatsby, a throwback to the roaring twenties adapted from F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic book of the same name. The announcement caused unrest earlier in the year given that Gatsby would already have been released in the U.S by the time Cannes came round (it was released last week) though there's a couple of other things to worry about.

The Great Gatsby opened in the United States to fairly lacklustre reviews, dampening the buzz surrounding the start of the 12 day Cannes Film Festival. The critics have already seen it. The critics didn't like it very much. "This dreadful film even derogates the artistry of Fitzgerald, who wrote "The Great Gatsby" while living on Long Island and in Europe," said the Wall Street Journal. It holds a score of 48% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Nevertheless, champagne bottles will be popped, deals will be made and Harvey Weinstein will be wandering around deciding which movie to snap up as his next Oscar winner at this year's festival. Stars expected to attend include Michael Douglas, Matt Damon, Ryan Gosling, Emma Watson and the legendary Bollywood veteran Amitabh Bachan. "This is the hardest 10 days of the year for me. There are always three or four movies that are exceptional and you have to find them so it is a detective job," said Tom Bernard, co-president and co-founder of Sony Pictures Classics.

The Great Gatsby – What Went Wrong?

Leonardo Dicaprio

It was all supposed to be the film event of the year, fledgling as 2013 may be. Baz Lurhmann’s interpretation of ‘the great American novel’ had it all, or at least we thought it would.

It Seems Women Could Rescue Baz Luhrmann’s ‘The Great Gatsby’

This wasn’t in the script. Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic tale of the roaring twenties, The Great Gatsby, was one of the most anticipated movies of the year. With a huge budget, an all-star cast and various exotic filming locations, Gatsby was supposed to be the film of 2013. Hell, it was even supposed to be the movie that won Leonardo Dicaprio that elusive Oscar for best actor. Sure, that could still happen, but it's hugely unlikely.

The Great GatsbyOne Of The Many Visually Impressive Scenes In The Great Gatsby

There’s no way to avoid the fact that Gatsby has been mauled by the critics. Though some have pointed in the direction of the stunning visuals, it soon became all too clear that Luhrmann forget one key element: Fitzgerald’s classic tale, the best possible material any director could have to work with. “This dreadful film even derogates the artistry of Fitzgerald, who wrote "The Great Gatsby" while living on Long Island and in Europe,” said Joe Morgenstern of the Wall Street Journal. J.R Jones of the Chicago Reader said, “Baz Luhrmann is exactly the wrong person to adapt such a delicately rendered story, and his 3D feature plays like a ghastly Roaring 20s blowout at a sorority house.” R. Kurt Oseland of Slant magazine pondered what could have been, saying, “When The Great Gatsby actually stops to breathe, there is some greatness to be found, however brief it may be.”

Leonardo DiCaprio And Christie's To Raise $18 Million At Charity Art Auction

Leonardo Dicaprio Banksy

Leonardo Dicaprio, the actor currently doing the promotional rounds for Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby, is teaming up with Christie's for a charity auction next week to benefit environmental causes. Thirty-three pieces of art will go under the hammer on Monday (May 13, 2013) in New York and could raise $18 million.

"A lot of the works of this quality have never been at auction. We have what we believe are conservative estimates," Loic Gouzer, international specialist at Christie's and the head of the sale, said in an interview, "It is going to be the biggest one-time environmental fundraiser ever," he added. Amongst the pieces up for sale are Zeng Fanzhi's oil canvas The Tiger and Bharti Kher's The Skin Speaks a Language Not It's Own, on fibreglass. Another is Mark Grotjahn's Untitled (Standard Lotus No. II, Bird of Paradise, Tiger Mouth Face 44.01) an oil on cardboard mounted on canvas. Each other three works has a pre-sale estimate of $1.5 million to $2.5 million. Other artists include the Bristol artist Banksy, Peter Beard, Richard Prince and Elizabeth Peyton. "We explained that we wanted great works and they were very reactive because of the cause. The artists are very sensitive to the fact that we are destroying our planet," Gouzer said.

Leonardo DiCaprio's new movie The Great Gatsby hits theaters today. It has received mixed reviews from critics.

'The Great Gatsby' Not So Great Says Unimpressed Critics

Leonardo Dicaprio

Leonardo Dicaprio’s been talking a good game when it comes to his latest collaboration with Baz Luhrmann, The Great Gatsby, but the critics aren’t impressed with the film adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel whatsoever, with the movie receiving a wide range of disapproving comments – worrying news indeed given the hefty budget that’s been spent on it.

“Frenzied and overwrought, Baz Luhrmann'sThe Great Gatsby is a glitz-filled folly” slammed USA Today, with The AV Club offering a more roundabout way of their criticism, writing “A half-reverent, half-travestying adaptation that's campy but not a betrayal, offering a lively take on a familiar work while sacrificing such niceties as structure, character, and nuance.”

Luhrmann’s films have also looked incredibly slick and stylized, but they’ve always managed to pack a fair bit of punch in the script as well which has prevented any of the criticisms currently winging it’s way towards Gatsby. Indeed it seems that a lack of substance is what’s getting most critics goats, withThe Bloomberg News writing “Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby" is a gaudy, Ritz-sized rhinestone of a movie, more flashy than dazzling, beguiling from some angles and phony to its core” and the Chicago Sun Times commenting “Even when the movie's not working, its style fascinates. That "not working" part is a deal breaker, though ...” Will it affect the film? We’ll find out when it’s released on May 17th.

Carey Mulligan Discusses Her 'Daunting' Role In The Great Gatsby [Video]

Carey Mulligan Baz Luhrmann Leonardo Dicaprio

In a brand new interview, Brit-actress Carey Mulligan discussed her latest role in Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel The Great Gatsby. In it, she discusses how "daunting" the whole experience of working with Luhrmann and the film's star Leonardo Di Caprio was, and how she always knew that she would be an actor some day.

The rising star explains her in-depth research for the role, including getting to read the letters and diaries of Zelda Fitzgerald and Ginevra King, whom the role of Daisy Buchanan is based. Her emersion into the character didn't end in her research either, as the actress looked the part throughout the film, being dressed in exquisit jewellery throughout filming, something that gave her more attention that she may have anticipated. She said, "There was a man who used to follow me around when I was wearing the Tiffany’s jewellery to make sure I didn’t [steal it] and everytime I made a joke where I’d accidentally drop it down my blouse, he would stare at me with daggers."
