The young actor's star was on the rise after wowing critics with his role in What's Eating Gilbert Grape? when he was invited to meet with director Joel Schumacher over his upcoming Batman film.

"I never screen-tested," DiCaprio tells Short List. "I had a meeting with Joel Schumacher. It was just one meeting and, no, I didn't end up doing it."

The movie star feels sure Schumacher realised he wasn't serious about the role, which eventually went to Chris O'Donnell.

"As I recall I took the meeting, but didn't want to play the role. Joel Schumacher is a very talented director but I don't think I was ready for anything like that."

And DiCaprio admits he felt the same when George Lucas came calling as he was casting the Star Wars prequel trilogy.

"Again, I just didn't feel ready to take that dive," he said.

Leonardo, who is winning rave reviews for his role as a 19th century wilderness man in new adventure movie The Revenant, also passed on Sam Raimi's Spider-Man, a role which was eventually offered to the actor's best pal, Tobey Maguire.
