Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising [Bad Neighbours 2] Review

Good

While it's amusing and sometimes very funny, there's an air of desperation about this sequel to the 2014 breakout hit comedy. The main problem is that, instead of pushing the characters forward in any way, the plot is basically a rehash of the exact same series of events. So the cast and crew rush through it in the hopes that audiences might not notice, throwing in issues like girl power and gay marriage to make it look like they noticed the criticisms of the first movie.

It's been a year or so, and now Mac and Kelly (Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne) are selling their house to move to the suburbs before the birth their second child. But just as the sale is agreed, a sorority moves in next door, founded by Shelby (Chloe Grace Moretz) in defiance of the usual frat-house rules. They get help from former fraternity leader Teddy (Zac Efron), who's aimless because his best pal Pete (Dave Franco) has just agreed to marry his boyfriend. So Mac and Kelly are worried that the loud parties are going to jeopardise the sale, and when talking with Shelby fails, the stand-off escalates into all-out war. And when the girls turn on him, Teddy swaps sides to help take them down.

The dialogue is packed with hilariously wrong humour, mainly adult gags that are spoken around very young children. The idea of a little girl who chooses a pink dildo as her favourite toy is good for one laugh, but perhaps not the next 10 the filmmakers try to wring from it. Meanwhile, there's a strange exhaustion in the air, as both Teddy and Mac seem tired of all of this nonsense. Efron and Rogen play the roles with impeccable timing, but both seem aware that they've already pushed these characters as far as they possibly can. Byrne has a lot more spark, and provides most of the best laughs. And Moretz shows some skill at spiky silliness.

It did really happen, if you want to check out this amazing fan video on Twitter, with the crowd joining in to help belt out the classic ditty.

Fans of Central Perk were given a treat on Wednesday night when Rachel, Monica and Phoebe reunited for a very special sketch on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Jennifer Aniston was appearing on the show to promote her new film, Life of Crime, but couldn't escape her role as Rachel Green on 'Friends'. In a hilarious sketch, she pretends to be completely surprised when Kimmel reveals a replica of the famous kitchen from the show. Kimmel plays Rachel's boyfriend, Ross, originally portrayed by David Schwimmer, in a script apparently written by Kimmel. She feigns irritation at Kimmel's bad writing and attempts to make her wear a Rachel wig he has hidden in the freezer.

Just What Was It That Made 'Friends' So Great?

Jennifer Aniston Matt Le Blanc Matthew Perry David Schwimmer Lisa Kudrow Courteney Cox

We’re feeling pretty nostalgic (and old) because it’s been ten years since the final episode of Friends aired. We’d sort of been getting by on the hope that a reunion episode would take place, but mean Matt LeBlanc ruined that dream. The actor, who played Joey, recently said: “That show was about a finite period of time in life, after college and before your relationship and family starts and where your friends are your support system. That’s what the magic of the show was - everyone goes through that and can relate to that.”

That wasn’t the only magic that Friends had. The reason that the show was so popular for so long was a combination of a dozen or so factors that just worked. The chemistry between the cast was palpable, you could just tell that Jennifer Aniston and Courtney Cox were best friends in real life and that translated onto their onscreen friendship.

Meet The 'Modern Family' Cast That Could Have Been (But We're Glad Wasn't)

Craig T Nelson Ed O'Neill Kristen Johnston Lisa Kudrow Jesse Tyler Ferguson Eric Stonestreet Ty Burrell Julie Bowen

We can’t imagine a more perfect cast that the one that Modern Family already has. Every single of one of them has made the roles their own, almost like they were written with them in mind. So you’ll be surprised to hear that hardly any of them were the first choice for the parts! But who did the producers have lined up before the perfect cast finally came together?

Modern Family Alternate Cast Craig T. Nelson was first choice to play Modern Family patriarch Jay Pritchett

Family patriarch Jay Pritchett was originally pegged to be played by Emmy Award winner Craig T. Nelson. Best known for his role as Hayden Fox in Coach and as the voice of Mr. Incredible in the 2004 animated film The Incredibles, producers originally approached Nelson although his pay expectations were too high. Ed O’Neill, who the role eventually went to (and who just IS Jay) explained, “When I read [the script] I thought, ‘Oh boy, this is pretty good.’ And I called my managed and he said, ‘Well, they’re out to Craig T. Nelson.’” We’re grateful that they couldn’t afford Nelson because no-one plays grumpy good guy Jay Pritchard quite like Ed O’Neill.  We're also sure that Nelson is kicking himself since Sofia Vergara could have been his onscreen wife!  We wonder if he'd known that to begin with it would have made a difference?

Neighbors [Bad Neighbours] Review

Excellent

There's a blast of raucous energy to this lively comedy that sets it apart from the pack; aside from a willingness to get deeply rude and incorrect, the movie is actually very funny. It helps that it's packed with snappy characters and witty dialogue, and that the cast makes the gratuitously vulgar humour come to life in surprising ways.

It opens with happy couple Mac and Kelly (Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne), whose idyllic life with their ridiculously cute baby is interrupted when a frat house moves in next door. They want to be cool about it, so introduce themselves and nicely ask the fraternity leaders Teddy and Pete (Zac Efron and Dave Franco) to keep it down. They even indulge in a bit of partying themselves. But the noise only gets louder, and when Mac and Kelly call the cops in a moment of desperation, they spark a war that escalates into a series of crazy practical jokes. This also gets the fraternity in trouble with their university administrator (Lisa Kudrow), which only fuels the battle.

Director Nicholas Stoller (The Five-Year Engagement) keeps things moving briskly, packing every scene with shamelessly coarse humour. For every joke that falls flat (like a breast-feeding set-piece), there are five more gags immediately following that generate gut-busting laughter. While the plot is little more than a series of elaborate pranks, there's an unstoppable momentum that builds to a riotous party climax. Even more important is the way the actors are allowed to twist their stereotypical characters to add some meaningful subtext.

The rumour of the Friends 2014 return is doing the rounds again and seems to be as unfounded as ever. Fake reunion movie and episode posters are once again circling the internet and simultaneously driving hardcore Friends fans wild as well as provoking a collective cry of "just let it go already!!"

Jennifer AnistonDavid Schwimmer
The 'Friends' Reunion Rumours Seem To Be Unfounded For Now.

Fans of the show are divided into two camps: those who salivate at every tidbit of reunion gossip, ready to jump back on the sofa for those first jangly strains of 'I'll Be There For You,' and those who for whatever reason, feel the franchise is best left at its rather neat finale which aired in May 2004 and are perfectly content with their Burj Khalifa-rivalling skyscraper of all ten Friends box sets.

Seth Rogen's 'Neighbors': The Funniest Scene Involving An Air-Bag-Ever?

Seth Rogen Zac Efron Lisa Kudrow

We've been waiting on this one for a while, and it looks as though Seth Rogen's latest movie Neighbors may be worth it. According to HitFix.com, Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Nicholas Stoller wanted to make a "stunningly dirty and wildly funny film" - and with Neighbors, they may well have succeeded.

Originally titled Townies, the move follows young couple Mac (Rogen) and Kelly (Rose Byrne) - a young couple who have just gone through two extremely stressful experiences, having a baby and moving home.

Of course, when a fraternity run by a hard-partying teenager (Zac Efron) moves in next door - things get a little more difficult. At first, the couple - who appear to still consider themselves relatively hip - reach out to the frat guys, though it quickly becomes apparent that it's going to be all out war.

Matthew Perry & Lisa Kudrow Address 'Friends' Reunion Speculation

Matthew Perry Lisa Kudrow Jennifer Aniston Piers Morgan Courteney Cox

Filling in for British host Piers Morgan on Piers Morgan Live on 26th July, Friends star Matthew Perry, AKA Chandler Bing, took over hosting responsibilities, showing off his natural talent for comedy in an interview with Friends co-star, Lisa Kudrow. In Perry's opening monologue during which he assesses how he and Morgan are different, he introduces his rather familiar first interviewee: "she beautiful, she's intelligent, she's hilarious and if memory serves she owes me, errr...47 dollars[...]you may remember her as being the second funniest cast member on Friends" as Kudrow's laughter filters through from offscreen.

Kudrow: Could She & Perry Form Their Own Splinter Version Of Friends?

The pair joked and bantered like old times, having spent ten seasons on the popular sitcom which charted the lives of a group of friends living in Manhattan. The pair also revealed that, if it were up to them, the show that broadcast its final episode in 2004 wouldn't have ended as soon as it did. "If I had a time machine, I would like to go back to 2004 and not have stopped," admitted Perry who has been seen most recently on the now cancelled 2012 NBC comedy, Go On. The unofficial Friends. The One With The Reunion Image has been floating around for months on Twitter, stirring up a frenzy but it's pretty clear no sneaky efforts are being made to produce more episodes under the radar.

90s Kids Look Away Now: There Will Be No Friends Reunion.

Courteney Cox Friends Matthew Perry Jennifer Aniston Lisa Kudrow Matt Le Blanc David Schwimmer

Did someone say “Friends reunion”? Technically, loads of people, but no one official. Sadly for all the devoted fans of the series (and there are definitely still a bunch of those around), the show’s co-creator Marta Kaufman has not only dismissed the current rumors, but she said a reunion of the 90s sitcom is never going to happen, Fox News reports. Well, that was a harsh letdown for everyone.

The buzz started earlier this week when reports surfaced that not only was a Friends reunion likely, but NBC had already confirmed the deal. There was even a photoshopped poster thrown into the mix, advertising “The One With The Reunion”, due to hit screens on Thanksgiving 2014. Kaufman, however, had this to say: “’Friends’ was about that time in your life when your friends are your family, and once you have a family, there’s no need anymore.”

According to her, now that the characters have families of their own, Ross, Rachel, Phoebe, Monica, Joey and Chandler are past their coffee shop days. Even the most devoted Friends fans can probably see how that makes sense, but the nostalgia still lives on. Warner Bros. also dismissed reports that a “Friends” movie was in development, telling Zap2it there is no “Friends”-related project being worked on by the studio. Harsh. But hey, maybe that means it's time for a re-watch.

Powder Blue Review

Terrible
Powder Blue is one of the most depressingly bad movies ever made. Every decision -- from the screenplay to the acting to the visual palette -- is a cynical calculation based on an uncomfortable amalgam of several other much better movies. The characters are manipulated ciphers, their stories are emotional copycats, and the film is an ugly, wretched bit of sanctimony. Of course the film purports to be about finding hope in the unlikeliest places, but I found absolutely none, except when the credits started rolling.

The film is a sloppy pastiche of four portraits of depressed souls in dire circumstances. Jessica Biel plays a stripper who leaves sweet phone messages on her comatose young son's hospital room phone. Ick. She is essentially one of those indie-chic characters who talks fast, snorts coke, and talks nonsensical platitudes to herself in a mirror. Ray Liotta is a guy who walks around town in a dirty suit and rides the bus a lot. From what must be intended as a clumsy flashback (hard to tell, since the movie is so stylistically bankrupt), we know that he is dying, so that gives him license to be as morose as possible for the entire movie. Eddie Redmayne is a mortician who can't get a girlfriend so he bonds with dead people. He looks like he's 12 but is intended to be about 30 from the way the film has him act. Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker fills in the final quadrant, playing a character with absolutely no relation to the others, except for that he is depressed and wants to kill himself. Rather, he wants to give someone else $50,000 to shoot him in the heart. Why? Because it's quirky.

OK
There's just something really screwy about a family like the Ephrons.

A pair of sisters (Nora and Delia) collectively control the purse strings of many a woman and hold they keys to the heart of the modern romantic through two movies: Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail. Nora Ephron (along with Meg Ryan), redefined delis and male-female interaction with 1989's When Harry Met Sally.... Both are the daughters of a screenwriting duo, children of The Industry, and have become higher-level powerbrokers than their parents ever were with a string of well publicized hits and soon forgotten misses that formed a winning streak that lasted up until now.
