Live At Leeds

Signalling the start of the festival season, the organisers of Live At Leeds have revealed the line-up of its 2018 edition next spring, with prestigious British bands like Circa Waves, The Horrors and Peace set to headline.

Returning for its 12th edition on the first May bank holiday, Live At Leeds announced the first swathe of acts who will perform on Saturday May 5th.

Dedicated to showcasing emerging talent from the pop, rock and indie world, a handful of more established names are usually thrown in for good measure.

Port Isla - Live At Leeds 2015 Interview

Port Isla hit the second stage at the Leeds Beckett Union late in the afternoon at Live At Leeds. The Norwich band's forthcoming EP 'A.L.I.V.E' became Radio 1's Hottest Record - and it's easy to see why. Their mix of uplifting lyrics and restful guitars make for a summery vibe that left the crowd feeling wistful as it drizzled outside. We sat down with them before the show to find out where the group dubbed "Great British indie-folk, executed properly" are headed and why they're taking a forward-thinking approach to releasing songs.

ContactMusic: Well it's very nice to meet you! How's it going in Leeds today?
Henry Kilmister [Drums]: Really good!
Stanley Spilman [Lead guitar]: I've been to Leeds loads seeing my friends at uni here.

CM: Why did you decide to release your two singles for free?
SS: I think that that system just works. Not being conceited in any way, but it makes sense because people are doing you a favour by listening to it. And if they like it then they'll tell their friends and that's worth way more to us than however much it is to get CDs made up.
HK: That person telling five or 10 of their friends about your band is worth a lot more than 99p for a single - however much we get from that. It's just a nice way of doing things too. Everyone likes getting free stuff! We hand out these postcards and free CDs at our gigs. If people are undecided about you at the gig you know they probably wouldn't buy a CD but if you give them one for free, they may at least listen to it on the way home and you've got your name out there.

Live At Leeds 2015 Preview

It's nearly that time again! More stellar acts will again flock to the spectacular Northern city of Leeds for a day of non-stop musical exhilaration. Plus, Live At Leeds 2015 will play host to some stunning new venues, and what better time to experience them?

Live At Leeds 2015 Preview

Without further ado, then, we present to you your must-see schedule for Saturday (May 2nd 2015). It's been tricky to work out this year, however, as every year each line-up gets better and better and this year is honestly no exception. So there may be a few overlaps, but you certainly won't be bored.

The Riptide Movement - Oporto - 12:00
Getting the day off to a low key start is The Riptide Movement at the small but very quaint Oporto bar. The only problem here is that a set from these Dubliners is bound to leave you singing along for the rest of the day ('All Works Out', for example), but it will at least get you geared up for their upcoming debut album 'Getting Through' released on June 1st, which has already been critically acclaimed in Ireland.

Little Matador - Interview At Live At Leeds 2014

Interview with Little Matador At Live At Leeds 2014

Much has been made in the media of guitarist Nathan Connolly's rock band, Little Matador. The Snow Patrol musician's new project has been called "aggressive", "loud" and "angry" with debut album 'Little Matador' having been released last month. Trying to avoid focussing too much on the Irishman's other band, Contactmusic went along to meet Nathan and drummer Dave Magee.

Contactmusic: Hey Little Matador, how has your day been so far in Leeds?

Nathan Connolly: Great! We got here last night and we've planned out our whole day today. We really want to check out The Mexanines, I want to see Royal Blood, Courtney Barnett, Holy Mountain, Pulled Apart By Horses, The Amazing Snakeheads, The Hold Steady, The Wytches - the list goes on! And we've got to fit in performing.

Interview with Darlia at Live At Leeds 2014

Lancashire three-piece Darlia moved from Blackpool to Manchester to really launch their music career, and now it seems they're at the top of their game with their 'Knock Knock' EP causing a stir and their UK headline tour coming up later this year along with their summer festival run.

We caught up with Jack, Nathan and Dave at Live At Leeds 2014 to discuss new experiences, how they got together and why they don't need synthesisers.

Contactmusic: Hey Darlia, welcome to Leeds! How're you finding the city?
Jack Bentham: It's great!

Live at Leeds - 2014 Live Review

Schedule clashes were the only possible thing that could have dampened the atmosphere at Live At Leeds 2014, with Loiners citywide basking in the bank holiday sunshine and wondering whether it was even worth wandering back into the Cockpit to catch that new local band, given such glorious conditions outside.

Live at Leeds - 2014 Live Review

But wander back in they did and, as ever with Live at Leeds, the spark of excitement and energy was fixed solely on those on stage - though the weather certainly helped.

Gone were many of the marquee bookings of last year - think Laura Mvula, Everything Everything and The Walkmen - with the focus for 2014 being on home-grown talent and the showcasing of a couple of new venues. It began at the First Direct Arena, the new pod-like hub for mainstream music in the city, which served as the festival's wristband exchange, and also just around the corner at Belgrave Music Hall.

It's been eight years since a bunch of music venues in Leeds first opened their doors to hardy metropolitan festival-goers for Live At Leeds. Following the tried and tested format of SXSW and the Camden Crawl, Live at Leeds has risen to become the country's foremost inner-city gathering of bands, musicians and like-minded music fans.

Though the booking is invariably spot-on, key to Live at Leeds' popularity is the quality of the venues, including The Cockpit, The Hi-Fi Club and the stalwart Brudenell Social Club. The bustling Belgrave Music Hall is a welcome addition to this year's festival. In order of appearance, here are 10 of our suggestions for this years event.

Live at Leeds 2013 - Live Review

Having quickly established itself as the best metropolitan music festival in the UK, Live At Leeds returned over the warm bank holiday weekend to send a spark of excitement and energy fizzing through the city's streets. As ever with LAL - and most other festivals - line-up clashes were inevitable though it did little to dampen the atmosphere of what proved to be one of the best Live at Leeds offerings yet.

The thing to remember when wandering the streets with a crumpled programme trying to figure out if you can sprint from Brudenell Social Club to The Wardrobe in under 8 minutes is that you really don't need to. The whole point of Live at Leeds is that there's always someone playing, somewhere, and it makes for a far richer experience to circle a couple of your must-sees though pretty much go with the flow of the festival.

Incidentally - after a visit to the Holy Trinity Church to catch the end of the impressive Harry George Johns - the first real port of call was the horrendously busy Cockpit venue in the city centre, where queues snaked up and down the street with hundreds of fans desperate to gain access. Luckily, organisers had put together a pretty tasty schedule for the venue so waiting wristband holders were eventually treated to something worth queuing for.
