Now You See Me 2 Review

Good

While the original 2013 magical caper was a big hit, it's style-over-substance approach didn't exactly scream out for a follow-up. But here we are, with go-to sequel man Jon M. Chu at the helm (he also directed the second Step Up and G.I. Joe movies). Most of the high-octane cast is back for more trickery, but the plot is even murkier this time.

Since their last whiz-bang stunt, the Four Horsemen have been laying low. Their leader Dylan (Mark Ruffalo) continues to work in the FBI, helping Daniel, Merrit and Jack (Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson and Dave Franco) plot their next caper, now joined by quirky illusionist Lula (Lizzy Caplan). Their latest project is to expose corruption at a New York conglomerate, but the stunt is ambushed, and the quartet mysteriously finds themselves in Macau, coerced by a tech genius (Daniel Radcliffe) into staging an elaborate heist. Meanwhile, Dylan's cover is blown, so he teams up with veteran Thaddeus (Morgan Freeman) and heads to Macau himself, chased by his FBI boss (Sanaa Latham). And it all goes down in London.

The round-the-world plot gives the movie some very cool locations, and the plot races so quickly that most audiences won't notice that it makes virtually no logical sense at all. There are flashy distractions at every turn, from sleight of hand to vanishing acts to gross-out gags to enormous double-bluffs, and all of this is thoroughly entertaining even if the script itself feels strangely incomplete. Most sequences tend to end before they get to the point, while action scenes are choppy and incoherent. The only set-piece that works is the kinetic central heist, which hinges on a rapidly flung playing card. But even though it's uneven and clunky, the film remains entertaining simply because of the magical shenanigans and snarky dialogue.

Now You See Me 2 - Teaser Trailer

After becoming the most famous magicians in the world with their last tricks and exposing the wrongdoings of Arthur Tressler, it was obvious that as many people as they helped, they'd always upset a powerful few. One of those is Arthur's son, Walter Tressler.

Walter is on a mission to cause The Four Horsemen as much damage as possible. In order to stop Walter, the four magicians must pull off a stunt far bigger than their first.

With Isla Fisher pregant and unable to commit to the film Lizzy Caplan (Masters Of Sex) has been brought in to play the role of Lula. Other than Isla, all the lead cast from the first film will appear in the new film and Daniel Radcliffe will play the role of Arthurs son, a tech magnate.

The Night Before Review

Good

This blending of the stoner bromance with the Christmas comedy works surprisingly well, layering gross-out humour with holiday sentimentality. So it's a bit of a shame that the script is thin and ultimately rather pointless. There are observations about the nature of friendship and maturity, but nothing very deep. But along the way, the cast and crew pack in a riotous sense of humour that mainly centres on drugs and genitalia, plus a whiff of Christmas magic.

The movie centres on three best buddies in New York: Ethan, Isaac and Chris (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen and Anthony Mackie). Over the past several years, they've celebrated Christmas together with a series of traditions including karaoke, Chinese food and loudly festive sweaters. But now Isaac's wife Betsy (Jillian Bell) is about to give birth to their first child, and Chris' pro-football career is beginning to take off. So this will be their last Christmas Eve together, and they plan to make it an epic one. Ethan has secured tickets to New York's most exclusive secret holiday party, which he learns that his not-quite-ex girlfriend Diana (Lizzy Caplan) is attending. Meanwhile, Betsy has given Isaac a box of drugs for a last blow-out, and Chris scores a stash of weed from a mythical dealer (Michael Shannon).

The premise is certainly packed with possibility, and the filmmakers have a ball with the druggy excesses as the night unfolds, including wildly anarchic set-pieces that throw these likeable characters into all kinds of messy situations. The three lead actors make the most of their roles, adding layers of complexity that aren't in the script while indulging in rampant silliness at every turn. And the supporting cast are up for it as well, fully committing to the movie's crazed atmosphere. There are also hilarious extended cameos from James Franco and Miley Cyrus.

Forget Franco And Rogen - 'The Interview' Poster Is A Thing Of Beauty

Seth Rogen James Franco Lizzy Caplan Evan Goldberg

The first trailer for James Franco and Seth Rogen's new movie The Interview rolled out online on Wednesday night (June 11, 2014) giving fans their first look at the frankly bizarre comedy that sees a would-be interviewer and his producer buddy tasked with assassinating North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un. Rogen had tweeted out the stunning poster a couple of hours before.

Franco plays the clueless tabloid TV presenter who is informed that Jong-un is a fan of his low-brow show and wants him to become the first western journalist to quiz him. Before he and his pal head out to the east, they are contacted by the CIA who want to capitalize on the opportunity to get close to the fearsome leader. By the looks of the trailer, nothing goes to plan.

'Game Of Thrones': Censorship In China & Criticism From 'Vikings' Creator

Lizzy Caplan Michael Sheen Michael Hirst

Game of Thrones has made headlines again and, for the second week in a row, it's not good news for the hit HBO series. The show has been criticised by the Masters of Sex cast, condemned by the creator of the History channel series Vikings and has been censored in China.

Game of Thrones
Lizzy Caplan, of Masters of Sex, claimed GoT is simply about sex and dragons.

The criticism of sex scenes and the highly sexualised content of the fantasy series, based on the novels by George R.R. Martin, has been the primary focus of commentators. The cast of Masters of Sex - Lizzy Caplan and Michael Sheen - referred to GoT whilst describing the importance of intimacy in their show's sex scenes as The Huffington Post reports.. Appearing at the TV Academy Panel last week, Caplan said: "Our show is about sex and intimacy whereas other shows are about other things, maybe dragons. No disrespect at all, but it does feel at times that it's like, time out dragons, let's watch these people get it on with each other."

Caplan's comments have been echoed by Michael Hirst, creator of Vikings, who claimed GoT was simply "soft porn". Hirst was asked by Time about the comparison between his show and GoT and he responded by condemning the show. Although Hirst claimed the series is "well written" and that it is "very popular", he also stated GoT "is a very, very different show." He further emphasised the differences between Vikings and GoT, stating GoT "is a fantasy show, and it has a lot of things which are very appealing to an audience. It is soft porn, and it has a lot of gratuitous stuff in it."

'Mean Girls' 10 Years On: Memes, Memories, And The Cult Of Mean

Tina Fey Lindsay Lohan Rachel McAdams Lacey Chabert Amanda Seyfried Lizzy Caplan Daniel Franzese

It's ten years since hit high school comedy Mean Girls was released. Yes, yes: we know it makes you feel old and all that jazz but what's more impressive than the simple passing of 3652.4 days is how a light-hearted look at the politics of high school life has become a phenomenon as popular and relevant now as it always was and will be forever.

To recap, Lindsay Lohan plays Cady Heron, a so-called "home-schooled jungle freak" who has spent her life sheltered from the regiment of mainstream school and its minefield of social rules. Cady is dropped in at the deep end when she catches the eye of the "plastics," a trio of vain and catty girls lead by Regina George (Rachel McAdams), the iron-fisted ruler of the school's in crowd.

Hurray! 'Homeland' And 'Masters Of Sex' Renewed By Showtime

Claire Danes Michael Sheen Lizzy Caplan

When you’ve got a good thing going, keep it going; that’s what the people at Showtime heard in a meeting scheduled to last one hour, but only lasted 5 seconds as David Nevins - president of entertainment at the network – uttered those words. Alright, so that didn’t actually happen.

Homeland
We'll be welcoming back these guys - probably - in season 4

But given the success of both Masters of Sex and Homeland, the decision process probably wasn’t much longer. Both have been huge hits for Showtime, with the latter set to run into a fourth season, with Masters of Sex renewed for a second.

'Homeland' & 'Masters Of Sex' Picked Up For New Seasons By Showtime

Damian Lewis Claire Danes Michael Sheen Lizzy Caplan

Showtime has renewed two of it's most popular shows, Homeland and Masters of Sex, for additional seasons past their current run. The network announced their plans to continue each series by at least one more season by a public statement, released via Entertainment Weekly, on Tuesday, 22 October.

Homeland
The cast of Homeland won't be going anywhere soon

David Nevins, President of entertainment on Showtime, said in the statement, “Homeland continues to prove its strength for Showtime, and is one of television’s most exciting, provocative and widely-discussed shows. It has grown its audience significantly in each of its three seasons. The critical and audience reaction to Masters of Sex since its great launch has been incredibly gratifying. It’s a privilege to get to work with such talented and creative people as Alex Gansa and Michelle Ashford, as well as their tremendous casts. They have each created truly original shows, with distinctive voices that are among the most admired series on television.”

How 'Masters Of Sex' Is Turning Into One Of This Year's Best TV Shows

Michael Sheen Lizzy Caplan

Showtime's newest series, Masters of Sex, is only two episodes old, but already the series is being routinely heralded as one of the network's best shows on offer. And it isn't just the critics who are falling for the new drama series, as audience numbers are on the up too, making the series look more and more like one of the year's brightest newcomers.

Masters of Sex
Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan star as pioneering sex researchers.

According to the Nielsen ratings, as reported by Variety, the show managed to draw in 1.1 million viewers during last night's episode, which seems like a much more impressive number when placed alongside the already-successful Homeland's 1.8 million viewer numbers. At it's peak, the show amassed as many as 1.5 million viewers, 100k more than the peak it attained in it's first week. Being placed right after Homeland in the listings may have worked to it's benefit, but there must be more to the shows success than a million people too lazy to turn their televisions over when Homeland ends. So what is it that make Masters of Sex so good?

Is Michael Sheen's 'Masters Of Sex' The Finest TV Show Of The Year?

Michael Sheen Lizzy Caplan

TV is where it's at. It just is. With Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead thriving and the likes of Robert De Niro and Matthew McConaughey turning to television roles, the small-screen is beginning to match its big brother for sheer quality and in most cases, provides far more in terms of character and story. Can you imagine Walter White unfolding over just 2 hours of cinemas?

And that brings us on to Masters of Sex, a 1950s set drama based on the book by Thomas Maier and stars the Welsh actor Michael Sheen as a pioneering human sexuality researcher. Bolstering Showtime's fall offering (it will premiere Homeland season three on Sunday), Masters of Sex is easily one of the best reviewed TV shows of the year.

How Masterful Is Lizzy Caplan In Showtime's 'Masters Of Sex?'

Lizzy Caplan Michael Sheen

Lizzy Caplan is one actress, whose career has been a joy to watch through the years – from a sour rebel highschooler on Mean Girls, through a droll caterer on Party Down, through to her hilarious/outrageous/endearing take on a bridesmaid in Bachelorette. Every role Caplan has done has benefited from her trademark wit and snark and now, the actress lends those same qualities to sex researcher Virginia Johnson on Masters of Sex.

The new Showtime series follows researcher William Masters and his assistant, Johnson, as they venture to explore the largely unknown field of human sexuality back in the 1950s – a time when talk of anything vaguely sexual was virtually taboo in most circles. But we know from her previous work that Caplan in particular has no problem with bending and breaking taboos. She has appeared nude in some of her other roles and is, in fact, not even interested in the question of nudity anymore.

Michael Sheen & Lizzy Caplan Are 'Masters Of Sex' In New TV Show

Michael Sheen Lizzy Caplan

Showtime's Masters of Sex will focus on the relationship between two sex researchers who devote their careers to putting others' sex lives under the microscope. William Masters and Virginia Johnson were two unlikely partners who worked together during the middle of the 20th century in a period of time now recognised as the sexual revolution. The pair, played by Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan, began studying human sexual behaviour in the late 50s when the subject of sex was taboo and sex therapy didn't exist as it does today.

Masters was a socially awkward doctor who had trouble persuading his patients to open up about their private lives; that's where Johnson came in. Virginia had been pursuing a difficult career as a country singer but her talents lay in that she was able to make people feel comfortable enough around her to share their sexual experiences and troubles.

'Masters Of Sex', Showtime's Upcoming Drama, Has Some "Decidely Unsexy" Intimate Scenes

Michael Sheen Teddy Sears Lizzy Caplan

Showtime's latest drama Masters of Sex follows the lives of two sex researchers in the 1950s. Based on the lives of William Masters and Virginia Johnson the series will depict their life and work. As sex sells it's likely to be successful, if not somewhat controversial for more conservative viewers.

Michael Sheen

Masters of Sex will follow the early working relationship of Masters and Johnson. It draws heavily from Thomas Maier's non-fiction book of the same name which documents the pair's research into sex. Their research centred on the theory that sex could lead to more intimate feelings which they attempted to test whilst monitoring and observing couples in coitus.

Bachelorette Review

Good
It's easy to see this comical romp as Bridesmaids meets The Hangover, but there's a bit more to it than that. It's a genuinely silly film with a rather simple plot, as three women try to accomplish something urgent while impaired by alcohol, drugs and romance. But it's goofy enough to keep us laughing.

The trio in question are Dunst, Fisher and Caplan, high school friends who reunite in New York as bridesmaids for Becky (a cleverly against-type Wilson), a girl none of them ever really liked. On the night before the marriage, they're goofing around with Becky's rather large wedding dress, and they tear it. So now they have one long night to get it repaired. Along the way, they run into the stag night for Becky's groom (MacArthur) and his chucklehead friends (Scott, Marsden and Bornheimer).
