Music manager Louis Walsh's brother narrowly escaped serious injury when the helicopter he was piloting crash landed into a car park.
Joe Walsh, the younger brother of the Irish music mogul, is said to have been flying a Robinson R44 aircraft with a passenger from Richmond, Virginia, when it came down outside of a block of apartments in Chatham, New Jersey.
CBS2 reports Joe, 55, was forced to carry out the emergency landing at 6.30pm local time on Friday (24Feb17), and that he and his guest were lucky to walk away unscathed. No one else was harmed in the crash, and so far it’s unknown what caused it.
“I think the pilot did a wonderful job landing this helicopter where he did and could have averted catastrophe,” a spokesperson for Chatham police said, according to the outlet.
A local woman named as Sarah Schwartz, who witnessed the incident, also commented on what happened and said she felt as though “angels” had been looking out for Joe and his passenger.
“We heard what we thought was an explosion. I was concerned it fell on the apartments. I ran over to make sure they were safe,” she explained.
The pair's safety is said to have been reported back to Joe's hometown of Kiltimagh in Co Mayo, Ireland, where his and Louis’ mother Maureen still lives.
X Factor judge Louis, 64, has previously joked that his sibling steals the attention whenever he returns home as locals assumes it’s him in the helicopter, not Joe.
"Joseph lives in New Jersey but he comes home all the time," he said, according to The Irish Times. "He has a helicopter and flies around the place and everybody thinks it's me."
