Pitbull and Mariah Carey will guest star in the upcoming season of Empire. The news about Carey’s role was revealed earlier this week at the unveiling of Carey's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame by the show’s creator, Lee Daniels. The network behind the show, Fox, made the announcement about Pitbull on Thursday morning (6th August) at the Television Critics Association Press Tour in Los Angeles.

Daniels remained tight lipped about Carey’s role in the second season but he revealed she will be guest starring in an acting role, rather than in the cameo capacity Pitbull is expected to appear in.

Daniels has previously worked with Carey on three different films: Tennessee, Precious and The Butler. Carey is not renowned for her acting ability but Daniels defended his decision to cast her in an acting role, claiming she had repeatedly “proven herself”.

“She [Carey] has certainly proven herself, good lord. Repeatedly,” Daniels said, speaking at the unveiling of Carey's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, as Variety reports. “I’m very excited to see where she goes on Empire.”

As for Pitbull, the 34-year-old rapper will reportedly make a guest appearance in one episode of the show and perform alongside Jussie Smollett’s character, Jamal. According to reports in Variety, they will perform ‘No Doubt About It’ together.

Carey and Pitbull join the likes of Chris Rock, Kelly Rowland, Marisa Tomei and Ludacris, who will all feature in guest appearances in the upcoming season.

In other Empire news, the show’s creator Lee Daniels has been signed by Fox to create a ‘spin-off’ series, as E! reports. The series, which was announced at the TCA on Thursday, will centre on a music group rather than a family, as Empire does. Star will centre on three women from Atlanta who have formed a group and are trying to be successful in the music industry. Although Fox’s executives did not explicitly say the show was a spin-off, they suggested there was a possibility of a cross-over.

Empire season 2 will premiere on 23rd September 2015.
