Biography

Marilyn Manson Brian Hugh Warner (born January 5, 1969), better known as his stage name Marilyn Manson, is an American musician known for his persona and as the lead singer of the eponymous band.

Music: Manson formed Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids in Florida in 1989, although the name was eventually shortened to Marilyn Manson in 1992.

In 1994 they released their debut album, 'Portrait of an American Family' from which they began to develop a cult following. Their fan base grew larger with the release of the EP 'Smells Like Children' in 1995. Particularly because the EP yielded the band's first big MTV hit with 'Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)', a cover of the 1983 Eurythmics hit.

In 1996 the 'Antichrist Superstar' album was an even greater success reaching #3 in the American Billboard 200 chart.

Three of the band's albums have been awarded platinum certification, three more gold, and the band has seen three of its releases debut in the top ten, including two number-one albums.

In 2004, the band's hit 'Mobscene' was nominated for a Grammy Award for 'Best Metal Performance'.

Film and television: Manson made his film debut in 1997 in David Lynch's 'Lost Highway'. Since then he has appeared in a variety of minor roles and cameos, including 'Party Monster', 'Jawbreaker', 'The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things', 'Rise' and 'The Hire: Beat The Devil'.

He also appeared as himself in Michael Moore's political documentary 'Bowling for Columbine' discussing possible motivations for the Columbine massacre and allegations that his music was somehow a factor.

Personal life: Initially engaged to actress Rose McGowan, Manson would then go on to have a seven year relationship with Dita Von Teese., who he proposed to in March 2004.

On November 28, 2005, they were married in a private, non-denominational ceremony in their home with celebrity guest such as Lisa Marie Presley in the congregation.

On December 30, 2006 Dita Von Teese filed for divorce due to "irreconcilable differences".

The media claimed that Manson was having an extramarital affair with then 19-year-old actress Evan Rachel Wood. Von Tesse confirmed this in an interview with an English newspaper, and a combination of alcohol abuse and distant behaviour were also cited as cause for the split.

Trivia: His stage name is a combination of the names of actress Marilyn Monroe and convicted murderer Charles Manson.

After media comments from Warner that he wears his signature black leather pants 24/7, animal rights group PETA added Manson to their 'Worst-Dressed Celebrities of 2008' list.

Manson is originally of German and Polish ancestry on his father's side.

Manson was working toward a journalism degree before forming his band, gaining experience in the field by writing music articles for a South Florida lifestyle magazine, 25th Parallel.

Manson has participated in several episodes of the MTV series Celebrity Deathmatch, where he often performs the voice for his claymated puppet.

Manson made an appearance in the video game Area 51 as a grey alien named Edgar.

WE ARE CHAOS - Marilyn Manson Album Review

We were actually quite excited about Marilyn Manson's eleventh studio album WE ARE CHAOS. Intrigued by the prospect of a co-production between Manson and country artist Shooter Jennings (the son of Waylon Jennings), we had high expectations for what a dark, gritty rock album would sound like with Southern twist. The question is whether or not we were sorely disappointed.

WE ARE CHAOS - Marilyn Manson Album Review

WE ARE CHAOS opens with RED BLACK AND BLUE which epitomises the phrase "to lull into a false sense of security". With its terrifying distorted vocals, heavy guitars and dark synths, this was the true Manson horror that we've come to know and love. It's honestly a bit of a highlight.

However, once it leads into the title track, the album completely changes tack. Now we've got a melodic ballad with a bit of a post-punk edge. It tries way too hard to be anthemic and infectious, and Manson's voice is frankly jarring throughout the restrained verses, and not in an intense, formidable, Nick Cave-esque way - more in a "has Marilyn Manson lost his mind?" kind of way.

Upcoming Releases: Five Albums We're Looking Forward To In September 2020

Marilyn Manson Lana Del Rey Idles Machine Gun Kelly Everything Everything

As some degree of normality returns to a crazy year and artists stop delaying their overdue album releases (COVID-19 isn't going anywhere any time soon after all), it looks like 2020 may not be a write-off for music in the end. Quarantine has obviously been good for some artists' creativity, because there's some seriously interesting looking releases coming this month alone.

Music And Murder: How Charles Manson Inspired A Generation Of Musicians

Charles Manson Marilyn Manson Nine Inch Nails Beach Boys Beatles

We're taking a rather different approach to our 'Album of the Week' feature this week as we explore instead the power that serial killer and cult leader Charles Manson had on musical culture on this, the 50th anniversary of his album Lie: The Love and Terror Cult which was recorded between 1967 and 1969 and released during his trial in 1970.

While there's arguably nothing especially remarkable about the album to note in terms of musical dexterity - at best, it's a mediocre folk record with disjointed lyrical themes - it does have a cult following thanks to the macabre history surrounding it. Artists like The Brian Jonestown Massacre and Neil Young are purported fans of the album, though whether they would still be if Manson hadn't incited his followers to commit nine murders during the summer of 1969 is another question.

Album Of The Week: The 25th Anniversary Of Marilyn Manson Debut Portrait Of An American Family

Marilyn Manson

It's hard to believe it's been 25 years since Marilyn Manson, alongside his band of the same name, released the debut album Portrait of an American Family through John Malm Jr. and Trent Reznor's Nothing label and Interscope Records. It was an iconic yet controversial beginning that kicked off Manson's unique brand of shock rock.

The album had an interesting production history. Not content with Roli Mosimann's "polished" production of the record under the title The Manson Family Album (arguably a MUCH better name, but hey-ho), Manson and Reznor went on to re-produce it in LA, in part at the latter's home studio at 10050 Cielo Drive which was where the Manson Family committed the Tate murders in 1969.
