Seth Macfarlane Mark Wahlberg Chris Pratt

Seth Macfarlane comedy Ted 2 failed to top the US box office this weekend, taking a disappointing $32.9 million and debuting in the number three spot. For the third week in a row Jurassic World managed to hold on to the number one spot as it added another $54.2 million to its haul.

Ted 2’s box office total was around $15 million less than industry experts had expected. Back in 2012 the original film took the number one spot in its opening weekend, taking $54.4 million at the box office. The comedy sequel stars Mark Wahlberg and Amanda Seyfried and features Seth MacFarlane as the voice of the foul mouthed bear.

When Seth Macfarlane's 2012 comedy Ted became a massive hit, work predictably started on a sequel. But MacFarlane was keen to do something new, so this film pushes both the talking teddy bear Ted (voiced by MacFarlane himself) and his human pal John, played by Mark Wahlberg.

Despite ending up with the girl in the first film, Wahlberg insists that John hasn't settled down. "That wouldn't be any fun," he laughs. "No, no, no, they're crazier than ever!"

"A lot of fans were very upset that it wasn't on air anymore," he says, "and everywhere I'd go, people asked me when the Entourage movie was coming. So I just kept pushing the project uphill. Every time I had a chance to talk about it in a meeting, I would talk about it. I'd have financed it myself, if I had to do it!"

Entourage Review

Very Good

Both shameless and shamelessly entertaining, this relentlessly boyish movie carries on exactly as the TV show left off after its eight-season run. In fact, it actually feels like a ninth season was condensed into 104 minutes, as it carries on with the same misogynistic approach, leering at women while laughing at the inappropriate behaviour of men. But these guys still have their charm, and when they get together the screen lights up with snappy banter and a hilariously knowing depiction of how crazy life is within the movie industry.

It's been four years since we last saw them, and Vince (Adrien Grenier) is just out of a disastrous marriage, yearning to direct his next movie, a raving sci-fi take on Jeckyll and Hyde. As luck would have it, his loyal ex-agent Ari (Jeremy Piven) is now a studio boss, so he lets him make the movie with his best pal Eric (Kevin Connolly) as producer, his older brother Johnny (Kevin Dillon) in a key supporting role and his pal Turtle (Jerry Ferrara) as their driver. But the Texan moneybags (Billy Bob Thornton) is dubious about all of this, and sends his know-it-all son Travis (Haley Joel Osment) to keep an eye on post-production. And Travis has some ideas of his own, much to everyone's horror.

While the rather bland Grenier holds the centre as Vince, the rest of the characters are given subplots to run with. Ari is in marriage counselling because he can't tear himself from his work; Eric goes through a few more women while preparing for his ex-girlfriend to give birth to their child; Johnny hopes this small role might finally kickstart his career; Turtle pursues a relationship with MMA champion-turned actress Ronda Rousey; and Travis is jealous of how much time Vince is spending with model-turned-actress Emily Ratajkowski. None of these plots have anywhere to go, but they pass the time amiably.

With his lifestyle having taken a significant overhaul following several years of hedonism (though it might not seem like it), Ari Gold is still acting as his agent despite his new job as CEO of Time Warner and is willing to give his client a shot at what he wants to do - even if no-one else seems to think he can pull off directing. He lands a $100 million budget but things get complicated when he goes over by $15 million. Vince isn't overly concerned with the film becoming a flop, but it could mean the end of Ari's career before its started if it doesn't come through.

The Gambler Review

OK

With a strangely simplistic screenplay by William Monahan (The Departed), director Rupert Wyatt and his cast struggle to dig beneath the surface in a meaningful way. Mark Wahlberg does what he can in the lead role as a self-destructive gambling addict, but since he's never remotely likeable it's impossible to care what happens to him. It's decently made, but without strong characters or a resonant message the movie ultimately feels like a vanity project that's gone wrong somewhere along the way.

Wahlberg plays Jim, a swaggering university professor who torments his brightest student Amy (Larson) in front of the whole class. But she knows that he's also unable to pass a blackjack table without losing a small fortune. And it's probably money he owes to someone. Indeed, he's accruing such severe debts to a gangster (Michael Kenneth Williams) that he turns to his millionaire mother (Jessica Lange) for help, knowing that if she gives him the cash he'll gamble it away before settling his accounts. So he also turns to tough loan shark Frank (John Goodman), who stresses to Jim the importance of paying up and getting out of the betting world for good. But Jim seems incapable of even a shred of self-control.

It's virtually impossible to connect with a character this one-sided. Aside from his literary intelligence, there's nothing remotely redeeming about Jim, so it's difficult to escape the feeling that he's getting just what he deserves. And it gets worse when he starts romancing Amy, a nubile girl barely half his age. Wahlberg never plays Jim as anything but an unapologetic loser who has orchestrated his own misfortune. So why should we care what happens to him? At least the side characters interject a bit of complexity, most notably Lange and Goodman, who command the entire film with just a couple of scenes each. The usually terrific Larson barely registers in an underwritten role that makes very little logical sense.

Mark Wahlberg Praises 'The Gambler' Remake

Mark Wahlberg William Monahan

Remaking and rebooting older films is the bread and butter of modern Hollywood. Once in a while, a filmmaker decides to approach a previously known work in order to retell the story in a different way or look at the same themes from a different angle. Sometimes, this approach will land a screenwriter with a serious prize, as William Monahan discovered when he adapted Hong Kong's 'Infernal Affairs' into 'The Departed' and won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Monahan has returned to write the screenplay for a remake of 1974's 'The Gambler', and lead actor Mark Wahlberg (who also starred in 'The Departed'), couldn't have more praise for the writer. "I mean, I was a really huge fan of the original" said Wahlberg, "but I felt that Bill Monahan did a really amazing job of bringing something different to it."

Cameo appearances can make for some of the greatest moments in movies. Remember seeing Alice Cooper in 'Wayne's World'? Stan Lee in 'Mall Rats'? Mike Tyson in 'The Hangover'? Or, possibly the greatest cameo of all time, Bill Murray in 'Zombieland'? Well, for a show set in and around Hollywood, based on the exploits of rapper/actor/executive producer Mark Wahlberg, it was understandable why HBO's 'Entourage' has more than its fair share of A-list cameos.

'Entourage' is set to hit US theatres on 5th June, 2015.

Over the course of its seven-year runtime, 'Entourage' racked up a very impressive list of cameo performances, including Jessica Alba, Scarlett Johansson, Hugh Hefner, Peter Dinklage, James Cameron, Seth Green, Snoop Dogg, Peter Jackson - you get the idea. There were an awful lot of people getting involved in 'Entourage', so it stands to reason that when the trailer for the feature adaptation launched, people were eagerly looking to see who would be making an appearance outside of the main cast.

Copyright Lawsuit Questions The Originality Of Seth MacFarlane's "Ted" Character

Seth Macfarlane Mark Wahlberg

Seth Macfarlane – frat guy favorite and walking controversy generator – is now involved in an intellectual property lawsuit over his 2012 hit, Ted. A Cali-based production company, called Bengal Mangle Productionsis suing MacFarlane, claiming that its 2008 screenplay Acting School Academy featured a raunchy teddy named Charlie. Like Ted, Charlie lives in a "human, adult world with all human friends. Charlie has a penchant for drinking, smoking, prostitutes, and is a generally vulgar yet humorous character," the lawsuit states. It also claims that the two fictional characters reside and similar environments (both spend substantial amounts of time on a living room sofa) and behave in a similar manner, including their speech and delivery. The suit was filed this past Tuesday and names producer and distributor Universal Studios and MacFarlane’s own production company Fuzzy Door Productions, along with MacFarlane himself. The suit alleges copyright infringement and seeks unspecified damages.

Transformers: Age Of Extinction Review

Weak

With each film in the Transformer saga, Michael Bay makes it clear that all he's interested in are massive metallic special effects bashing into each other and usually exploding. Because otherwise this is a vacuous thriller without any characters to speak of, no sense of plot coherence and an appallingly simplistic sense of geography. There's plenty in this franchise to enjoy (just watch the original 2007 film again), but Bay takes everything so seriously that only die-hard fans will have any fun this time.

The story picks up five years after the cataclysmic Transformers' battle in Chicago, as Texas inventor and overprotective single dad Cade (Mark Wahlberg) builds gadgets in his rural barn, oblivious to the fact that his 17-year-old daughter Tessa (Nicola Peltz) is secretly seeing 20-year-old Shane (Jack Reynor). Luckily, Shane is a race driver, so he's handy to have around when black ops agents commanded by shadowy CIA director Attinger (Kelsey Grammer) raid Cade's farm looking for an old truck that turns out to actually be Optimus Prime in hiding. This sparks a return to Chicago for more mayhem, followed by a hop to Beijing and Hong Kong, where Optimus Prime and a handful of remaining good-guy Autobots take on the villainous Lockdown. Helped of course by Cade, Tessa and Shane, plus billionaire inventor Joshua (Stanley Tucci).

The new gimmick this time is dinosaurs, building on a prologue showing the real reason they went extinct. This comes back in the climactic battle in the form of Dinobots, ancient Transformers that will have fanboys squirming in their seats with joy while everyone else yawns and looks at their watches, astounded that Bay has somehow managed to stretch this paper-thin story out over nearly three hours of metal-on-metal chaos. As in the earlier films, the action is quite literally cartoonish, purely animated mayhem that's not easy to decipher. At least the humans help keep it vaguely approachable, as they provide running commentary in their dialogue and bounce through the air like plastic action figures who never get hurt.

"Transformers: Age Of Extinction" Holding Tight In US AND Chinese Box Office Lists

Mark Wahlberg Nicola Peltz

When the Transformers: Age of Extinction production team set the story in China, with Chinese actors, and banked on an overseas release, they were clearly making a focused effort to appeal to loyal fans of the franchise in the country. It paid off in the very first week, with the film’s Chinese release vastly outpacing the American one.

How does Michael Bay keep finding an audience for these things?

According to China Media Group, via CRI, Transformers: Age of Extinction has made $134 million in its first five days of hitting the big screen in China. Meanwhile, its first week in the US has registered just $121 million. Still a success for Universal, but these numbers seem like the herald of a cultural shift, at least with regard to movie sales. The film debuted with a $100+ million weekend in the US and, despite a projected 60% drop rate for the second weekend, it is expected to hold on to the top spot at the box office this coming three day period, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Transformers: Age Of Extinction Is Rubbish, But Just How Much Money Can It Make?
