Mycroft eventually explains how she was their psychotic younger sibling whose genius far exceeded each of theirs. She was sent away at a young age after apparently killing Sherlock's dog Redbeard and is now held at a high security institution in the middle of the ocean called Sherrinford.

It turns out that she's having a good influence on him in the end, because it's her words combined with a frantic Mrs Hudson (Una Stubbs) who encourages Watson to help Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) and forgive him for his involvement in Mary's death.

‘Sherlock’ returns for a full series for the first time in nearly three years on New Year’s Day – but the growing Hollywood success of its chief stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman means that the new fourth series could be the last.

That is, at least, according to the BBC One drama’s co-creator Mark Gatiss, who told reporters at a recent screening that while everybody involved was enthusiastic to make more episodes, the increasing difficulty of getting them in the same place at the same time was placing the future of ‘Sherlock’ in jeopardy.

'Sherlock' actress Amanda Abbington has claimed her purse was stolen during Sunday night’s Emmy Awards in Los Angeles. The actress, who plays Mary Morstan in the BBC One drama alongside husband Martin Freeman, said her purse was taken while she was onstage collecting the show's award for Best Television Film.

On Twitter yesterday Abbington told fans: "Thanks for the lovely tweets re; the Emmy's. So pleased we won! Cool, right? However, we went up to collect the Emmy, did some press, came back to my seat and some bastard had nicked my purse from under my seat. Nice.”

Don't be alarmed, but there's a possibility that 'Sherlock' won't be on our screens for much longer according to the show's executive producer Steven Moffat. Benedict Cumberbatch has said he’s “thrilled” to be back working on the series that made him a megastar, as filming for the long-awaited season four of ‘Sherlock’ finally gets under way.

Fans of the BBC series have been promised that “ghosts of the past” will visit the new three-part instalment, which will see 39 year old Cumberbatch return as the famous detective alongside Martin Freeman as Dr. Watson. The episodes will be directed by American Rachel Talalay, whose previous credits include The Wind in the Willows and ‘Doctor Who’.

“I can't wait for everyone to see season four,” Cumberbatch said on Wednesday (April 6th). “But you will have to wait… though not for long… and it will be worth it.” No broadcast date has yet been confirmed.

The stars stepped out onto the red carpet for one of the glitziest ceremonies of awards season: the Creative Primetime Emmys.

Having previously won for NBC's political drama 'The West Wing' as White House press secretary C.J. Cregg, Allison Janney’s award for outstanding guest actress in a drama series for her role in Masters of Sex, which also stars Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan, was a particular highlight. 

Backstage, Janney highlighted that playing Margeret Scully was certainly challenging at times. "I felt that Margaret Scully challenged me in ways that I've never been challenged before as an actress on so many levels - on an emotional level, on a physical level - and having to do sex scenes was extraordinarily nerve-wracking and stressful for me and something that I didn't think I'd have to do at this age, frankly," she explained.

It looks like British favourite James Corden has successfully sealed his fate as another Brit over on American shores with his appointment as the new host of CBS’ Late Late Show all but confirmed by the broadcaster itself. Of course, just because he’s travelling over to the US to have a go in the host seat of a different studio does not automatically mean he’s going to be a hit and, so far, his selection has not been met with too raucous an applause, mainly because most Americans don’t know who he is.

The Hobbit trilogy has been criticised by some viewers for having too little content spread too thinly over the course of too many films. Originally, the idea was to split the 1937 J. R. R. Tolkien story over two films; however, in 2012, director Peter Jackson confirmed his plans for a third film; some six years after the two-film decision had been made.

Was this to enhance viewers’ experience of the story or was it because three films make more money than two? Audiences will never know. However, speaking at the Television Association Critics summer press tour this week, Hawley confirmed that the second season would feature an entirely new setting, story and characters though they will be connected to the 'Fargo' world. Richard III, Jamie Lloyd's latest Shakespearean staging, has debuted in London to much clamour from fans of The Hobbit actor Martin Freeman, who is cast in the titular lead role. Whilst Freeman's casting is a shrewd move from the director, who evidently recognises the importance of attracting audiences unfamiliar with Shakespeare.

However, several reviewers have been wondering whether this was such a good idea after all. "Jamie Lloyd's staging of Richard III is unecessarily complicated, while Martin Freeman feels like a boy sent to do a man's work, says The Telegraph's Charles Spencer.

Describing the production as "director's theatre at its self-advertising worst," the reviewer adds "Freeman gives a disappointingly underpowered performance as Richard, normally one of the most thrilling roles in Shakespeare."

Billy Bob Thornton is the menacing villain who corrupts Nygaard and Allison Tolman is the series’s Marge, but not pregnant.

Yesterday saw the release of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug on DVD, which leaves us free to obsessively think about the final instalment of the trilogy! The Hobbit: There and Back Again is the third and last film based on JRR Tolkien’s 1937 book of the same name and will provide us with a conclusion to the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and the band of dwarves. Martin Freeman has followed his 'Sherlock' co-star Benedict Cumberbatch to a London stage production.

The 42 year-old will play Richard III in his first ever Shakespearean role this coming summer. Freeman will play the Machiavellian King from July until September at Trafalgar Studios in Whitehall, the Daily Mail reports.

The play's director, Jamie Lloyd, is currently casting for other roles in Richard III.

That strange middle episode, the one with the wedding, contained a lengthy section focusing on Watson’s bachelor party, at which Sherlock was the only guest. Plenty of beers later and the pair are investigating a crime that would eventually tie in to the rest of the series, but rumors were soon flying round that the pair were actually drunk and shot a scene in a gay bar.

Benedict Cumberbatch has told reporters in the US in no uncertain terms that he and co-star Martin Freeman are definitely up for filming a new season of hit BBC detective drama Sherlock. Upon its third season airing, the show has just enjoyed its best ratings to date in the US and last weekend's series finale in the UK was branded "perfect" by critics.

Erebor, The Lonely Mountain where Smaug the Dragon lives in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, would cost around $6 billion to buy, if it was real, according to a new housing report. US real estate experts Movoto have put together some details of the "multilevel property" to coincide with the release of The Desolation of Smaug - based on JRR Tolkien's Hobbit book. The company has previously estimated the price of Hogwarts, Wayne Manor and Barbie's dream house in Malibu.

On the basis that Erebor includes an entire underground city and working on the assumption that Middle Earth mirrors Europe, Movoto has valued Smaug's luxury property at $6 billion. It estimates that the Lonely Mountain is slightly north of Kirov in Russia and is probably around 44 square miles.

Last night (December 3) saw the premiere for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug at Los Angeles’ Chinese Theater. While the final Hobbit film wrapped filming back in summer, the production team and cast, including Martin Freeman, Benedict Cumberbatch, Orlando Bloom, director Peter Jackson and many others, will still have plenty of chances to catch up at premieres and promotional events leading up to the film’s release. They clearly enjoyed doing so last night, if photos from the premiere are any indication.

The UK air date for the third season of Sherlock has been confirmed. The hit BBC detective drama, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, will return to BBC1 on New Years Day. The BBC has broken the news via a hearse driving through the streets of London with flowers arranged into "SHERLOCK" and "01 01 14" with the hashtag #sherlocklives printed on the window.

Naturally, the use of social media has meant that the news has spread quickly throughout the Twittersphere with fans reacting excitedly to the major excitement. The new series will reveal how Sherlock managed to fake his own death after Moriarty forced suicide upon him and whether the villain truly could have died. We're guessing not seeing as Sherlock would be left without his greatest nemesis.

The World's End - the third and final instalment of Edgar Wright's 'Cornetto' comedy trilogy starring Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Paddy Considine - hits cinemas nationwide on July 19, 2013. It centres around five friends who attempt a notorious pub crawl in their unassuming hometown - twelve pubs, twelve pints and the only the strongest will survive.

Of course, the mind of Edgar Wright doesn't work think along quite such straight lines and the boozy group unwittingly become humankind's only hope for survival.

Also starring British talent Rosamund Pike, Eddie Marsen and The Hobbit star Martin Freeman, The World's End promises a hugely enjoyable finale for the trilogy - also featuring Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz - though the soundtrack is worth checking out too.

Edgar Wright's hugely anticipated sci-fi comedy The World's End premieres in London on Wednesday (July 10, 2013) bringing together the British director, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost for the final time (for the Cornetto trilogy, at least). The movie stars Pegg as an immature 40-something who persuades four friends to undertake a marathon drinking session in a small English town. 12 pubs. 12 pints.

What audiences may not be aware of is that Wright's comedy is based on a true life pub crawl he and friends undertook in the 1990s. The filmmaker enlisted some of the finest British actors around - Frost, Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine and Eddie Marsan - to play his buddies, though made sure to invite the original pub-crawl line-up to the premiere.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Trailer is finally here, and with it, the first look at Benedict Cumberbatch's big scaly fire breathing dragon. The British actor voices Smaug in the second of Peter Jackson's trilogy, which appears for a couple of seconds at the end of the new trailer - however, we still haven't heard the beast's voice and really hope he utters something in the actual movie, or it could be a miserable pay-packet for our Benedict.

Mainly, it's the old characters that have been called upon to hype the latest film, with the dwarves playing a prominent role in the trailer and Bilbo looking a bit bewildered as usual. However, we are treated to the return of Orlando Bloom's Legolas - who literally slides into the trilogy - and Luke Evans' Bard the Bowman. The latter had a minor role in the previous film though is believed to be crucial to The Desolation of Smaug and There And Back Again. According to Yahoo Moves, the Bowman is tasked with stopping the terrifying dragon after warning the dwarves, "If you awaken that beast you will destroy us all."

Following last Christmas' first instalment that kicked off the trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the new episode of adventures in Middle Earth will take Gandalf (Ian McKellen), Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) and the band of aggrieved-yet-upbeat dwarves further into their quest to reclaim the Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor; stolen from them by the evil dragon, Smaug (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch).

Now, Bilbo has gained The One Ring after his life-changing meeting with the wretched Gollum (Andy Serkis) and the brave group have escaped the Goblin Kingdom to start the next leg of their quest to reclaim their kingdom and riches from Smaug, travelling through the Misty Mountains.

Based on the novel that preceded J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Hobbit was one book that has been turned into three films. Sure, this is probably to rake in maximum profits, but at least three 3 hour films will allow Jackson to deliver close interpretations and stretch out the franchise for another few years.

The first trailer for Edgar Wright's new movie The World's End has rolled out online - and it looks a riot. The final instalment in the Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) follows Gary King, a 40-year-old looking to reclaim the glory of his teenage years by vowing to complete the infamous Newton Haven pub crawl that he and his pals failed to finish 20 years ago. The problem lies in the fact that his friends are now middle class, comfortably living blue collar workers: why would they possibly agree?

Benedict Cumberbatch looking deadly serious on the set of 'Sherlock'

Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman began filming series 3 of 'Sherlock' in the most dramatic way with hypnotism and leaping of buildings on Friday (April 12th 2013) in Central London.

The contemporary detective drama based on the 19th century stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is set to continue in the Winter of 2013 as filming kicked off last week in London where the last series left off.  Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman were snapped acting out some intense scenes as their respective characters Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson. Co-creator Mark Gatiss was also on the set as Sherlock's older brother Mycroft Holmes as well as antagonist Jim Moriarty played by Andrew Scott. Psychological illusionist Derren Brown made a surprise appearance on the set, hypnotising Martin Freeman who subsequently dropped to the floor in one spectacular scene; it is as yet unclear as to Derren's role in the upcoming series 3 plot but speculation has suggested that his character could be based one of Conan Doyle's darkest characters Sebastian Moran.
