The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug has maintained its number one position in the box office charts for a third week. Peter Jackson's sequel has fought of competition from Disney animation Frozen, comedy Anchorman: The Legend Continues and crime drama American Hustle to claim 2013's final weekend triumph.

So far The Hobbit has collected $190 million at the worldwide box office but the total is still behind the original instalment which had already picked up $230 million by the third weekend. In its sixth week of release, Disney's Frozen gave a still impressive performance, taking $28.8 million behind The Hobbit's $29.9 million weekend total.

New releases The Wolf of Wall Street and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty had been expected to perform well but still couldn't prise away the top perches from the three biggest films of the moment. Leonardo DiCaprio's Wolf of Wall Street proved the best performing new film, climbing to fifth position with $18,510,000 taken since its Christmas Day release. Ben Stiller's fantasy adventure The Secret Life of Walter Mitty came in at the weekend's seventh strongest movie, taking $13,000,000.
After a deluge of negative reviews, Keanu Reeves' 47 Ronin just about managed the top ten on its first weekend with $9.9 million.

Though The Hobbit 2 hasn't sold as well as its 2012 predecessor, its nevertheless impressive takings demonstrate the longevity of Jackson's Lord of the Rings franchise and the draw of epic fantasy movies during the holiday period. Capitalising on the festive season, Frozen's box office success has stunned observers with its total of $248.3 million takings making the endearing musical Disney's biggest domestic film since 1995's The Lion King.
