Matt Smith has effectively ruled out playing two of the U.K’s most popular characters by shrugging off rumours that a Sherlock role might be his in the not-too-distant future. Speaking at the Wizard World Con, he said: ‘Listen, there’s no room for me on Sherlock!”

Doctor Who fans got a real treat yesterday, when the costume of the 12th Doctor, played by Peter Capaldi, was unveiled. Matt Smith Bows Out Of 'Doctor Who' In Dramatic Christmas Special

Matt Smith Peter Capaldi Karen Gillan Jenna-louise Coleman Doctor Who

There was a lot of promise surrounding the Christmas episode of Doctor Who and when it aired on BBC 1 on Christmas Day it very much lived up to the hype and expectation buzzing around the show and the exit of the Eleventh Doctor, Matt Smith. The exit of Smith also meant one other thing, the regeneration of the Doctor into his twelfth form: enter Peter Capaldi.

Doctor Who
The Doctor had business to attend to before he could bow out

The Christmas special - called 'The Time of the Doctor,' in relation to the fiftieth anniversary episode 'The Day of the Doctor' - was full of action and packed in plenty of entertainment in the lead up to Smith's eventual bow out from the show that launched him to stardom. The episode featured Daleks, Time Lords, Cybermen, Weeping Angels, a town called Christmas and more and even Amy Pond (Karen Gillan), the Doctor's former assistant, made an appearance in the show to say farewell the Eleventh Doctor.

The Extended BBC America Trailer For The Doctor Who Christmas Special Is As Cheesy As It Is Fascinating

Matt Smith Jenna-louise Coleman

It’s that time of year again – time to get overly emotional or just slightly snooty over the newly released US extended trailer for the Doctor Who Christmas special. This one, however, is super special, if you’ll pardon the wording, since it also marks the departure of the 11th Doctor and, correspondingly, Matt Smith.

The last time this happened to us (“us” referring here to whovians as an emotional support system, which was sorely needed at the time) was in the 2010 Christmas episode. Let’s just say bulk quantities of tissues were used during that episode. With current showrunner Steven Moffat’s propensity for killing off his characters (even though he mostly resurrects them afterwards) whovians the world over should probably gear up for a tear-jerker.

According to the trailer, this year’s episode will be a family affair, with the Doctor visiting his companion Clara at her parents’ Christmas dinner. We’ll also get to see some new friends in the face of the Silence, the Weeping Angels (always a favorite monster) and, natch, some Daleks, ready to wreak havoc.

5. This spot is often given to Peter Davison, aka The Fifth Doctor. His hiring at the time was somewhat controversial, since he is the youngest actor (besides Matt Smith himself) to take on the part of the centuries-old Time Lord. We’ve got to give it to Davison, however. He did create a complex character and was really adept at portraying the Doctor’s internal conflict. Fifth place it is.

Smith is still set to play the Doctor in two episodes: a 50th anniversary special and the traditional Christmas episode. “It’s important we give Matt the sendoff he deserves,” producer Marcus Wilson said. “The 50th anniversary is our most ambitious episode yet, then we need to top that to give Matt a proper sendoff.”

Matt Smith Jenna-louise Coleman

One of the biggest events in television this year is the 50th anniversary of the beloved sci-fi drama Doctor Who and on Saturday, the occasion was marked by a special anniversary DW Prom, held at Royal Albert Hall. The event was massive, with a feeling of grandeur permeating every moment of the show. As with Doctor Who itself, the audience played a key part in the festivities. Many attendees expressed their love for Matt Smith’s Doctor by donning his signature red fez. Smith, who is, of course, set to leave the show at the end of the current season (after the 2013 Christmas Special) could not skip an appearance at the special event.

In a way, the event was a final hurrah for Matt Smith.

But first, there were a number of cameos from the “classic” series. Peter Davidson, who played the 5th Doctor, came on stage to introduce a suite of music from the original Doctor Who, while Carole Ann Ford, who played the Doctor’s granddaughter Susan way back in 1963 recounted some of her most amusing experiences on the DW set. While all these festivities were going on onstage, the audience was a constant participant, as the cybermen, wandering the isles, never let the tension drop. When Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman took the stage, the audience erupted in cheers.

Rory Kinnear is unlikely to replace Matt Smith as Doctor Who, claiming he isn't exactly sure what the long-running sci-fi show is. Early this month, several bookmakers stopped taking punts on the Skyfall actor to become the new Time Lord, though Kinnear's team maintained radio silence.

Now - apparently bemused by the speculation - the theatrical actor tells The Independent that he's never watched an episode of the BBC show and does not believe he'll be offered the job. "I don't where it came from and how these things evolve", he explained, "I haven't been and I am totally certain that I will not be asked to be the next Doctor Who. If I was an actor who was really longing to play Doctor Who, then this would be torturous, but it's a programme I've never watched, so I don't even really know what it is."

Prince Charles And The Duchess Of Cornwall Go Sci-Fi With Trip To Dr. Who Studios

Matt Smith Prince Charles

Prince Charles took his wife Camilla to the Dr. Who Studios while on their annual summer tour in Wales. And while there, Charles tried his hand at being an evil genius, uttering the famous “Exterminate” phrase through a Dalek microphone.

Prince CharlesPrince Charles Uttered The Famous 'Exterminate' Line At The Studios

"I haven't thought about how I could weave a meeting between the Doctor and the royal family. But Prince Charles's attempt at being a Dalek was great,” said the show’s creator, Steve Moffat. "There would be a part in the show for him if he wanted it." While there is no official word on the next Dr. Who – since Matt Smith announced he would be stepping down - Rory Kinnear is the favourite for the role, so much so, that the bookies stopped taking bets on him after a flurry of support for the Skyfall star.

Russell Brand As Doctor Who? Why Not!

Russell Brand Matt Smith

Russell Brand is the latest high profile actor/famous person to express his desire to be the new Dr. Who. The comedian, who has been in America making bad films and writing excellent articles and said he would jump at the chance to time travel and boot Cybermen in the nether regions.

“I'd love to be the Doctor,” said Brand on Absolute Radio. “I'd be like a Tom Baker one, a long scarf, flouncy, wistful, quoting occasional poems, kicking Cybermen in the nuts," he exclaimed. One thing’s for certain, he has the flamboyancy and extravagance needed for the role. "I would just travel through time pinching people's a***s. Carry on up the worm hole. Like quantum physics, so that is actually perfect.”

Oh, hang on. Hang on a minute. Matt Smith quitting his role as The Dr has not only disappointed fans of the series – Smith was a popular time lord – but it has set the rumour mill into overdrive. Ben Daniels was mooted as a possible favourite, but now rumours are suggesting it’s time for a female Dr, with Miranda Hart and Sue Perkins leading candidates.

Samuel West Puts His Hat In For The Dr. Who Role

Samuel West Matt Smith

Who will be the next Dr. Who? That’s the question on everybody’s lips. And if Samuel West has got anything to do with it, then it’ll be Samuel West.

The star, best known for his theatrical roles, is keen to fill the boots of the time travelling maestro. "If you’re asking whether I’d like to play Doctor Who, I absolutely would,” he explained. “I’ve always wanted to play Doctor Who. Hamlet and Doctor Who - and I’ve done Hamlet. At 46-years-old, he doesn’t think his age should put him out of contention. He said: “They can’t go on getting younger forever. Every Doctor Who, almost without exception, has been younger than the previous one. Eventually we’ll just have this glittering foetus – that’s not going to work.” His love of the show, perhaps, is why he thinks he’d bee good at it. He’s even got ideas of what the lead character should be like. “I think he should be slightly other,” Sam continued. “I remember when I first started watching it he was a little bit like a frightening grandfather and I don’t want to be a grandfather but I don’t think he should be cuddly. 'Other' is the word, he should be a bit 'other'.”

The Hunt Is On For A New Doctor Who, But Which Cultural Barrier Should The Next Time Lord Break?

Doctor Who Matt Smith Billie Piper

Matt Smith announced last week that he is to step down from the role that made him a household name, leaving the door open for the 12th Doctor in the show's 50 year run to step into Smith's shoes. As the 11th white actor to play the Time Lord moves on to bigger things, there is a strong demand from the public for the next Doctor to break the mould a little a bring in the first female or ethnic actor to take on the role.

The man behind the momentous return of the show, Steven Moffat, has already green-lit a change from the norm and the mounting pressure to introduce a bit of diversity on the show may prove too much for the people in charge of casting at the BBC. Still, a quick look at the odds for the next Doctor seems to indicate that things won't change too much at all, with the top odd all being designated to various white, male actors.

The top three tips for the next Time Lord are Cutting It star Ben Daniels, Irish actor Damien Molony (of Being Human fame) and Downton Abbey's Dan Stevens, with former Doctor Who sidekick Billie Piper and Kinky Boots star Chiwetel Ejiofor the favourite non-white males to take up the mantle. Neither of these two make much sense though, as having a former sidekick regenerate as a Doctor would be too weird even for the Doctor, whilst Ejiofor is frankly too good and too established an actor to make the move to television when he should really be one of the main names to take up Daniel Craig's place as James Bond or being offered Oscar-worthy roles instead.

WHO Will Be Next Doctor Who? Place Your Bets Now!

Matt Smith Rupert Grint Ben Whishaw Andrew Scott Billie Piper Steven Moffat David Beckham Jason Statham Simon Cowell

Matt Smith hasn't even given up his role as the Doctor in the BBC's Doctor Who yet but speculation is already rife over who will take over command of the TARDIS as the eleventh incarnation of the Doctor is set to step down this Christmas, having debuted in January 2010.

William Hill have drawn up a list of odds; the most favourable, surprisingly, is for the next Doctor to be played by a female actor.

The bookies current favourite, at 10/1, is 31 year-old Russell Tovey, best known for his roles as werewolf, George Sands, in BBC drama Being Human and the character, Rudge, in both the stage and screen adaptations of The History BoysTovey took to Twitter to lament the stepping down of Smith in a statement that has fuelled speculation he might be in talk to be the next Doctor: "Sad to hear of Matt Smith's doctor departure, he truly is a superb actor and made the Doc proper.. Who's next tho eh? Who's next.. Hmmm x" Rupert Grint, who played Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter franchise, jointly ranks alongside Tovey with 10/1 odds. William Hill spokesman, Rupert Adams says he thinks Grint, 24, would "be perfect for the role."

Following Matt Smith's Exit, Dr Who Producers Are Toying With The Idea Of Introducing The First Female Doctor

Matt Smith Steven Moffat Doctor Who

Matt Smith announced this week that he will step down from his role as the current Time Lord on the ever-popular and long-running BBC series Dr Who following the airing of this year's Christmas special. Needless to say, the show's producers are currently compiling a list of potential replacements for Smith, however there is word that they may make a surprise casting choice by hiring the first female Doctor the show has seen.

Producer and head-writer Steven Moffat will look to put his ever-lasting stamp on the show he helped return to the public zeitgeist, by introducing the historic character development. The Mirror reported the potential casting decision on Sunday (June 2), following the news the Smith was due to leave.

The paper alluded to a comment made by Moffat at the Edinburgh TV Festival in 2012 when he discussed the unpredictability of the Doctor and that having a female Time Lord is a very feasible idea. He said, “It is a part of Time Lord lore that it can happen. Who knows, the more often it is talked about the more likely it is to happen some day.”

Regenerate! Doctor Who Replacing Matt Smith At The End Of The Current Season

Matt Smith David Tennant Billie Piper Karen Gillan Jenna-louise Coleman

Fans of Doctor Who better say their goodbyes to the show’s star Matt Smith, who will be leaving his role at the end of the season. Smith’s Doctor will regenerate during the 2013 Christmas special and get a brand new body (or in non-Doctor Who terms, a new actor will come in to fill the role.) Smith has been playing the Doctor for the past four seasons of the show (where did the time go?) having taken over from David Tennant in 2010. As you might imagine, that wasn’t an easy transition for the fans. There is likely to be a lot of nostalgia for “the old Doctor Who” after this change as well. As for Matt Smith, he has no regrets, saying for BBC news that working on the show has been "the most brilliant experience".

This season of the show is filled with surprises and big events for the Whovian community. After the show introduced a new companion to the Doctor, played by Jenna-louise Coleman, its 50th anniversary special is due during the series’ fall season. Smith has already filmed the special episode, which will feature cameo appearances by DW alumni David Tennant and Billie Piper. Referring to his time-travelling companions, Amy (Karen Gillan), Rory (Arthur Darvill) and Clara (Jenna-Louise Coleman), Smith said: "It's been an honour to play this part, to follow the legacy of brilliant actors, and helm the Tardis for a spell with 'the ginger, the nose and the impossible one'. But when ya gotta go, ya gotta go..."

During the announcement of Smith’s departure, head writer Steven Moffat expressed his admiration for the youngest actor to ever play the Doctor: "Every day, on every episode, in every set of rushes, Matt Smith surprised me. The way he'd turn a line, or spin on his heels, or make something funny, or out of nowhere make me cry - I just never knew what was coming next.

Doctor Who 50th Show Begins Filming At Tower Of London

Matt Smith

It looks things are getting going for the much-anticipated 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, with an iconic building from the previous Doctor Whos and the wider world at large.

That’s right, the Radio Times reports that production this week moved to the Tower Of London on the banks of the River Thames in order to get the next stage of filming under way. Aficionados will recall that the building has fictionally previously served as an HQ for Earth defence force UNIT. Apparently Jenna-Louise Coleman, Jemma Redgrave - who plays UNIT's head of scientific research - and the newest cast member Ingrid Oliver were all filming yesterday (April 9, 2013). Oliver is also known for performing with Lorna Watson as comedy double act Watson & Oliver. In addition to the stars on location this week, Matt Smith will remain as the current Doctor for the 50th anniversary special, with former Doctor and assistant David Tennant and Billie Piper respectively set to make an appearance too on this special show.

The show is being shot in 3D with the episode airing in November, with Matt Smith reckoning it was going to be incredible. Speaking to the Mirror last month he said “It will be undoubtedly the biggest and the best. And it will be one of the most exciting years for the show.”

Original Doctor Who Director Slams Modern Show's Sexuality

Matt Smith Doctor Who

The original director of Doctor Who has criticised the modern day version of the programme for its new-found sexuality. William Hussein worked on the original version of the show, when William Hartnell played the Time Lord. In an interview with BBC Radio 4, he said “There is an element now, and I know we're living in a different era, of sexuality that has crept in.” As the show approaches its 50th anniversary show, Hussein questioned the need for a sexual slant on the show, saying “Why bring in this element when in fact you needn't have it there?”

The Time Lord is currently played by Matt Smith, who has been in the role since 2010. He is now joined by a new female companion, Jenna-Louise Coleman. Hussein is clearly not enamoured with the sexual tension between the two actors and explained that it had never been necessary in the earlier series of the show, when the likes of Peter Purves and Carole Ann Ford graced our screens. “The intriguing thing about the original person, was that you never quite knew about him and there was a mystery and an unavailability about him… Now we've just had a recent rebirth and another girl has joined us, a companion, she actually snogged him.”

The aforementioned Time Lord of yore, Peter Purves was in agreement with Hussain, as well, stating “The original series was so simple. They were very straightforward, nice linear stories that one could follow.”

A Stellar Cast: David Tennant Leads Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Cast

David Tennant Doctor Who Joanna Page Matt Smith John Hurt Jenna-louise Coleman

David Tennant will lead a stellar cast for the forthcoming Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special. The former Gavin & Stacey star Joanna Page will also join the cast, as will Billie Piper, who was once a Doctor Who star herself. Current stars Matt Smith, John Hurt and Jenna-Louise Colman will all appear in the special episode which is due to start filming this week, according to The Daily Mail.

Joanna Page recently gave birth to her first child and it’s not clear which role she will take, though she attended a recent read-through for the forthcoming special. Back in 2010 when it was rumoured that she may appear in Doctor Who, Joanna commented “I think I’ve got to be the only Welsh actress who has never been in Doctor Who so if someone would like me to be in Doctor Who I would love the part.”

Both the 10th (David Tennant) and 11th (Matt Smith) Time Lords will appear in the show, which will be screened in cinemas in November, according to the report. The show’s producer Steven Moffat is working hard to ensure that the content of the anniversary programme stays under wraps. “One length I've gone to which is a really good security measure - I make sure I don't get a script, because I will lose it. I forbid people to hand me one. It's on my computer under lock and key.” Matt Smith explained “It's about looking back and forward at the same time, a bit like the Doctor does. It's about celebrating everyone that's been involved with it, all the wonderful actors that have taken part before me, and it's also about looking forward.”

Matt Smith And Steven Moffat Talk Up Doctor Who Series 7

Matt Smith

Doctor Who show runner Steven Moffat and its main star Matt Smith have been bigging up the forthcoming series ahead of the debut airing of its first episode on March 30th on BBC 1.

Moffat has promised a more action-packed Who than ever, with tips of the hat to the likes of James Bond expected in the first episode, set in London. "We thought let's do it as a proper London thriller, as close as you can get – given that Doctor Who is mad – to James Bond," said Steven Moffat at a special screening of the episode, according to The Guardian. "The Doctor can never be Bond or Bourne – but if he tried it might look a bit like this."

Following his lead, the ever enthusiastic Matt Smith commented "We've got a submarine, we've got the ice warriors, we've got the Cybermen back in new guise. We've got Neil Gaiman writing a script, and we've got Diana Rigg playing an old hag – but brilliantly, with great charm and sexiness and grace." The new Who also sees the official debut of Clara – played by Jenna-Louise Coleman – though she’s appeared in various incarnations over the previous series. "I suppose this is take three and this is the Clara that we'll be with for the next episodes," said Coleman. "But with all of the Claras there's kind of an essence that's the same throughout." Smith added "Having got his grieving … out of the way, I think [Clara] has re-ignited his curiosity in the universe and given him his mojo back."

Dr Who Star Matt Smith Cast In Ryan Gosling's 'How To Catch A Monster'

Ryan Gosling Matt Smith Christina Hendricks Benedict Cumberbatch

Doctor Who star Matt Smith has been cast in Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut How To Catch A Monster, The Guardian reports. The movie will be written by Drive star Gosling, with Christina Hendricks and Eva Mendes already cast. Hendricks plays the role of Billy, a mother of two who finds herself entering a “macabre underworld” when her teenage son Bones discovers a secret road, which leads to an underwater town.

What results will be something betwixt a modern fairytale and a film noir fantasy. The film’s synopsis reveals “Both Billy and Bones must dive deep into the mystery, if their family is to survive.” Not much else is known, at least not publicly, about the film and it’s not clear what role Matt Smith will play, though it’s understood he will be the male lead. Though Eva Mendes (Gosling’s girlfriend) is said to be attached to the movie, her role is also not known, as yet. Smith recently finished his third series of Doctor Who and will begin filming How To Catch A Monster in the Spring.

It looks as though Matt may well be following in the footsteps of Benedict Cumberbatch, an equally ‘quintessentially British’ actor making a name for himself in Hollywood. It’s a pretty big deal for Smith to have landed the role in Gosling’s movie, which has been attracting attention since it was announced back in August. And of course, having played Doctor Who, he’s plenty of expertise when it comes to dealing with monsters.

Dr Who Isn't Just For Christmas; It's For 2013, Too

Matt Smith

Everyone knows the Dr Who Christmas special is a family affair; a festive institution; a tradition, a right of passage. But it's pertinent to know, according to Steven Moffat, anyway, that Dr Who will dominate 2013.

"They are immense, they are considerable," he promised. "[The episodes] will be full of tremendous surprises. But they wouldn't be surprises if I accidentally said them now, would they? But I promise you," he continued, "we're going to take over television. Trust me. You will know [what the link is between the two] eventually. You are going to get the answer but as ever on Doctor Who, we make you wait a little bit longer." 'The Snowmen' will air on BBC One on December 25 at 5.15pm, with eight more Doctor Who episodes confirmed to follow in 2013. Moffat added, in his interview with SFX, that there are "No two-parters, so they're all standalone stories. And they are all huge - there isn't the budget-saver episode. I don't know how we've done this. Possibly we'll find out at the end when we'll have no money left and will have to go to prison..." Intriguing...

There's probably nothing more sinister, and destructive to the innocent brains of children, that killer snowmen, but the modern versions of Dr Who - played by Matt Smith, have proved to be immensely popular, and don't shy away from scare-fests, even in holiday season. Especially in holiday season, in fact.

Could Doctor Who Christmas Special Be The Best Episode Yet?

Matt Smith Doctor Who

The Doctor Who Christmas special - set to air on Christmas Day - features new music, new titles, a new costume and a sleek new Tardis, according to The Guardian. Writer Steven Moffat has promised plenty of surprises in the forthcoming episode, which stars Matt Smith's new sidekick Jenna-Louise Coleman.

"They [the new episodes] are immense, they are considerable and they will be full of tremendous surprises," said Moffat at a special preview of the Christmas episode, "We're not going to tell you [any details] but I promise we're going to take over television, trust me." It appears to be an ambitious instalment of the long-running drama - a 60 minute special featuring a seasonal splash of romance and Richard E. Grant, among others. Set in Victorian London, the episode follows the Doctor as he grieves the loss of Amy and Rory, though meets Clara (Colman) - his new companion. "I felt like I was on a blind date for a while . it's like putting two people together, 'Oh I know someone you'll really get on with - now go on and save the world," the former Emmerdale actress said of joining the cast. In other Doctor Who news, Moffat ruled out that Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock would ever share screen time with the Time Lord, "The doctor would just be furious because there would be someone else clever and tall in the room, and that's his job.Can you imagine it? They'd just stand there and sulk at each other," he said.

Doctor Who: The Snowmen airs on Christmas Day, 5.15pm, BBC1.
