Biography

Meg Ryan (born Margaret Mary Emily Anne Hyra, 19.11.1961) Meg Ryan is an internationally-renowned Hollywood actress. Amongst her most famous films are When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless in Seattle.

Childhood: Meg Ryan was born in Fairfield, Connecticut, to Susan Hyra Jordan (formerly Ryan) and Harry Hyra. Her mother was an actress and casting director and her father was a maths teacher. Meg has two sisters, Dana and Annie, as well as a brother, Andrew. Andrew is one half of the folk rock duo Billy Pilgrim.

In 1979, Meg Ryan graduated from Bethel High School and went on to study journalism, firstly at the University of Connecticut and then at New York University. To earn extra money whilst she studied, she acted in television commercials for products such as 'Tickle' deodorant. The commercials led to further work as an actress and she subsequently dropped out of university just before she should have graduated.

Acting Career: One of Meg Ryan's first acting roles came in the 1981 film Rich and Famous, starring Jacqueline Bisset and Candice Bergen.

This was followed by an ongoing role in the daytime drama As The World Turns. Between 1982 and 1984, Meg Ryan played the role of Betsy Stewart. Ryan then landed a number of small film and TV roles in productions including Promised Land (for which she received an Independent Spirit Award nomination) and Amityville 3-D.

In the lead-up to her big break, Meg Ryan had a role in Top Gun, which starred Tom Cruise, playing the wife of Nick Bradshaw, played by Anthony Edwards. She also played the role of Lydia Maxwell in Innerspace, which starred Dennis Quaid and Martin Short.

Meg Ryan's crossover into mainstream recognition came in 1989 when she was awarded the lead role in When Harry Met Sally. The film became an international hit and also starred Billy Crystal. Ryan played the role of Sally Albright and she was earned herself a Golden Globe nomination. The performance has become memorable over time, for the scene in which she fakes an orgasm in an overly theatrical manner.

In 1991, Meg Ryan appeared alongside Val Kilmer in The Doors, a biopic about Jim Morrison, singer of the rock band, The Doors. The film also starred Billy Idol, Kyle MacLachan and Kevin Dillon. The following year, Ryan appeared in an adaptation of Craig Lucas play Prelude to a Kiss. She took the female lead, opposite Alec Baldwin.

Meg Ryan's career took another upturn when she starred in 1993's Sleepless in Seattle. Working once more with Tom Hanks (she had first worked with him in Joe Versus the Volcano), the film became a huge global hit, grossing over $225 million worldwide.

By this point in her career, Ryan was in danger of being typecast in romantic comedies and lighthearted films, so she next chose to work on When A Man Loves A Woman, in which she plays an alcoholic, alongside Andy Garcia and Philip Seymour Hoffman. This was followed by Courage Under Fire. This critically acclaimed drama also starred Denzel Washington, Matt Damon and Lou Diamond Phillips.

1997 was a hugely successful year for Meg Ryan. Firstly, she appeared in City of Angels, with Nicolas Cage. Although the film was not favoured by film critics, it was a huge financial success, grossing almost $200 million at the box office. Following City of Angels was You've Got Mail. This film saw her paired with Tom Hanks once more and also brought her third Golden Globe nomination. Again, the film was financially triumphant, and grossed over $250 million across the globe.

In 2000, Meg Ryan was reportedly paid $15 million to star in Proof Of Life opposite Russell Crowe. The film was unpopular with movie critics and did not perform well at the box office.

Meg Ryan then went on to star in a few low profile movies such as Hanging Up, Kate & Leopold and In the Cut. It was this latter movie that brought Meg Ryan some negative press as well as controversy - partly due to her decision to appear nude in the film and partly due to her much-talked about interview with Michael Parkinson on British TV.

In June 2009, Meg Ryan confirmed that she will appear in the seventh series of Curb Your Enthusiasm - the US comedy show starring Larry David.

Personal Life: Meg Ryan was married to the actor Dennis Quaid between 1991 and 2001. They had a son together. She was also briefly involved with Russell Crowe. In January 2006, Meg Ryan adopted a Chinese girl named Daisy True.

Meg Ryan And John Mellencamp Split. Why Is Meg Ryan So Unlucky In Love?

Meg Ryan John Mellencamp Dennis Quaid Russell Crowe Graham King

The greatest surprise that celebrity watchers will feel for the split of actor Meg Ryan and singer-songwriter John Mellencamp, was the fact that these two screen veterans were even dating in the first place. Such was the pair’s coyness and clandestine approach to the relationship that their coupling largely flew under the radar. The liaison itself lasted all of three years and marks another in a long list of failed relationships for the now 52 year-old Ryan.

Meg Ryan And John Mellencamp
Ryan and Mellencamp's relationship remained largely hidden from the glare of the media

Ryan and Mellencamp came together some time in 2010, after Mellencamp ended an 18 year marriage with Elaine Irwin, a former model who was once the face of Ralph Lauren. Splitting their time between an east coast dwelling and Mellencamp’s longtime home of Indiana, it has been cited that it was the sheer distance between the pair that led to the split. Ryan, once a prolific actress, has not appeared in a motion picture since 2009’s Serious Moonlight but is currently producing a film entitled Ithaca. Meanwhile, Mellencamp has been busy on a new album, Plain Spoken, which is due for release shortly. But why can’t Ryan keep hold of a man?

Meg Ryan Playing Another Sally In 'How I Met Your Dad'

Meg Ryan Greta Gerwig

Meg Ryan is allegedly lined up to narrate the mother’s voice in the upcoming spin-off of How I Met Your Mother…the very originally named How I Met Your Dad.  Following a very similar pretext to its predecessor, How I Met Your Dad is set to be told from the mother’s point of view, re-telling the story of how she met her children’s father.  We get that it's a very clever concept, but surely once it's been done, it's been done?  Next thing someone will be rewriting Breaking Bad with a female English teacher lead, with a young Jessica Pinkman helping her mass produce some kind of pink crystally drug.  Or even just combine the two shows into one: How I Met Your Breaking Bad.

Meg Ryan How I Met Your Dad When Harry Met Sally actress Meg Ryan will lend her voice to Sally AKA the mother

In the original series of HIMYM, which recently ended, Bob Saget provided the voice of the father. Ryan’s role will allegedly mirror Saget’s, meaning that each week we will hear her character Sally recount a story which led her to eventually meeting the father of her children. Despite lending his voice to How I Met Your Mother, Saget himself never actually appeared on the show. The role of Ted was instead played by Josh Radnor, who was the ‘father’ right up until the final episode of the series.

According to previous announcement, How I Met Your Dad will correspond with the story of the original, but told from the perspective of the mother. It will mostly be a separate story, crossing over into How I Met Your Mother territory at key points. My Mom's New Boyfriend Review

Weak
Grown-up son living at home becomes angry and frustrated when his mom brings a new guy into the picture. Wait, didn't I just see this movie? Literally, a week ago?

Turns out My Mom's New Boyfriend has some differences with Mama's Boy, though it sticks closely to the overall shoddy quality level. This time out it's not a straight-up case of a son feeling betrayed. Writer/director George Gallo (DysFunktional Family) throws in a crime caper too. Henry (Colin Hanks) hasn't seen Mom (Meg Ryan) in three years due to his undercover duties as an FBI agent. When he returns home with a fiancee (Selma Blair), he finds that Mom hasn't just lost hundreds of pounds, she's also turned into a raving sexual lunatic, too. No sooner has Henry made his old bed than Mom gets mixed up with Tommy (Antonio Banderas), a known art thief... who Henry's been assigned to spy on!

The Doors Review

Very Good
I figure most of us thought The Doors was plenty of movie at 138 minutes. Little did we realize that one of Oliver Stone's least favorably received movies would call for a two-disc DVD set with 43 minutes of deleted scenes, numerous documentary extras, and a feature length commentary track from Stone.

And yet here it is.

Top Gun Review

Very Good
Anyone fondly remembering Top Gun as a prototypical action-packed Jerry Bruckheimer 'nad-fest probably hasn't seen it in awhile. Newly released as a mega-deluxe DVD, it's time to remember what Top Gun really is: From "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" to "Take My Breath Away," it's mushy love story first, fighter-pilots-in-training movie second.

Ironically, the early 1990s would bring to light the fact that carousing was what naval pilots seemed to do best: The 1986 Tailhook scandal occured during the same year Top Gun was released.
