Mel B has claimed that she was drugged by her estranged husband Stephen Belafonte throughout their decade-long marriage, as their increasingly rancorous divorce battle finally enters the courts.

The 42 year old former Spice Girls and current ‘America’s Got Talent’ judge, real name Melanie Brown, is divorcing her husband of ten years and is alleging that he perpetrated domestic violence against her throughout their marriage.

However, the Los Angeles Superior Court was told on Wednesday (October 25th) during preliminary hearings that Brown now claims that Belafonte drugged her, as well as subjecting her to years of physical abuse and mental torment.

“Miss Brown now takes the position she was drugged by Mr Belafonte throughout the course of the marriage,” one of Belafonte’s lawyers, Philip Cohen, told the court, according to Sky News.

Lawyers for Belafonte, a former film producer, have dismissed Brown’s claims as “nothing more than a smear campaign”, and, in counter-allegations, say that Brown had cocaine and alcohol addictions, calling them a “major issue” in their marriage.

It has also been claimed that Brown led an “extravagant” lifestyle that “wiped out” a $50 million fortune she had accumulated during her Spice Girls fame.

The estranged couple had married in Las Vegas in June 2007, welcoming their only child together in 2011, a daughter named Madison. Brown already had two children, named Phoenix and Angel.

Brown filed for divorce in March this year having separated in December 2016, citing irreconcilable differences on top of the abuse allegations. The trial on the latter accusations has been delayed and will now begin on November 6th.
