Mel B’s divorce from Stephen Belafonte looks as though it’s set to be a bitter process, with the former Spice Girl alleging that he used to physically and emotionally abuse her as she applied for a restraining order in a California court this week.

The British singer and ‘America’s Got Talent’ judge, whose full name is Melanie Janine Brown, allegedly claims that she was in an emotionally vulnerable state when she married her now-estranged husband Belafonte in Las Vegas in June 2007, according to a report by TMZ.

In the restraining order that was granted to her on Monday (April 3rd) and which reportedly forced Belafonte to leave the family home and cease all contact with her and their three children, Brown detailed the circumstances in which she got married to him ten years ago.

“I was vulnerable. I was giving birth as a single mother, my self-esteem was very low, and my hormones were out of balance due to the pregnancy,” the application is said to have read.

She also claims that Belafonte very quickly changed in his behaviour toward her soon after they were married. At first he “rushed to help me in every way,” but shortly after he would tell her she was “worthless, that he made me 'who I am,' that no one knows how really stupid I am.”

She apparently claimed in the documents that Belafonte attacked her self-confidence, particularly as she tried to lose weight after giving birth, and that she constantly feared that he would release sex tapes of them in order to ruin her reputation and have the children taken away from her.

Brown further claims that he “threatened me with violence and threatened to destroy my life in every possible way… destroy my career and take my kids from me.” At her lowest ebb, in December 2014, she details that she took an entire bottle of aspirin in a suicide attempt as she was at the point of “emotional and physical exhaustion”.

TMZ reports that, for Belafonte’s part, he has questioned Brown’s motives in going public with these accusations.
