‘Supergirl’s’ all important costume was designed by Academy Award winner Colleen Atwood, who is also responsible for the look of DC characters ‘The Flash” and ‘Arrow’ on the CW. The costume keeps the character’s traditional colour combination of red, blue and gold, going for a long sleeved top with the famous ’S’ logo, a red skirt, over the knee boots and a long flowing cape.

In a statement Atwood explaining her design choice saying, “In designing Supergirl, I wanted to embrace the past, but more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today.”

The two promotional pictures released by the network for the series show the character in dark lighting, giving the impression that the show will continue with the current trend of presenting a darker take on the comic book character.

Alongside Benoist, ‘Homeland’s’ David Harewood has been cast as Department of Extra-Normal Operations’ head Hank Henshaw, while ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ alumni Chyler Leigh will play Supergirl’s foster sister. ‘True Blood’ star Mehcad Brooks has also been cast, as Jimmy Olsen, while Calista Flockhart will play media magnate Cat Grant.

Helen Slater, who played Supergirl in the 1984 feature film, as also signed on for the series in an as-yet-unnamed role, as has Dean Cain who played Superman on the small screen in the 90s.
