An American in Paris and Fun Home landed 12 Tony nominations apiece at the announcement on Tuesday, showing the variety on Broadway. One is a sunny stage adaptation of the 1951 musical film, the other, a dark show based on Alison Bechdel's coming-of-age graphic novel about a suicidal father.

"It's nice to know if something's good, there's room for it," said Max von Essen, nominated for featured actor in a musical for An American in Paris.

Michael Cerveris was nominated for best leading actor in a musical for Fun Home.

The stage-play can pretty much be summed up by an opening line: "My Dad and I both grew up in the same small Pennsylvania town. And he was gay. And I was gay And he killed himself and I... became a lesbian cartoonist."

Elsewhere, Wolf Hall Parts One & Two, an adaptation of Hilary Mantel's first two Thomas Cromwell novels, took eight nominations including best play, best actor for Ben Miles, supporting actor for Nathaniel Parker - who played Henry VIII - best director for Jeremy Herrin and best supporting actress for Lydia Leonard. 

The stunning The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time took six nominations on the back of incredible fanfare. The National Theatre show stormed last year's Olivier awards and was one of the best reviewed shows of the year.

"This is one of the most fully immersive works ever to wallop Broadway," said the New York Times critic Ben Brantley.
