Marvel Announces Release Date For Unknown Movie - What Could It Be?

Robert Downey Jr Michael Douglas

Last week Marvel studios took the unusual step of announcing five upcoming movie release dates stretching into 2019 without actually announcing what movies they would be. Now they’ve added another date for that schedule: May 4th 2018.

Robert Downey Jr Susan Downey
Robert Downey Jr, pictured here with wife Susan, is unsure of his future role with the Iron Man films

Presumably this has been made possible because of the recent news that Sony has pushed back the release date of The Amazing Spiderman 3. The projected Amazing Spiderman 4 movie had been due to be released on May 4th 2018, but obviously that date has now become available.

SuperMensch: The Legend Of Shep Gordon Review

Excellent

For his lively film directing debut, Mike Myers (aka Austin Powers) traces the remarkable life of his friend, the almost too-likeable music manager Shep Gordon. A mensch is a really nice guy, and this film documents how Gordon has created a makeshift family of loyal friends around him, even though he's never had a proper family of his own. It's an engaging movie that reminds audiences that the most important thing in life is certainly not fame.

Shep Gordon came to Los Angeles as a young man and happened to stay in the same hotel where Joplin, Hendrix and Morrison were hanging out. Quickly getting involved in their blurry world of drugs and money, Shep won over everyone he met simply because of his integrity and generosity. As a manager, he lived the high-life with high-powered girlfriends like Sharon Stone (who introduced him to Buddhism) and a Playboy Playmate wife. He helped Groucho Marx sort out his finances, and worked with lifelong pal Alice Cooper to create Cooper's iconic on-stage persona. And he's still considered one of the best fix-it men in the business. His home in Maui is a bolt-hole for any of his celebrity buddies who are trying to escape the limelight.

The film is assembled with a snappy rhythm that catches a sense of Shep's fast-paced lifestyle. It's packed with great film clips, hilarious home movies and even a few re-enactments. But the best stories are told by the starry interviewees who clearly adore Shep and recount riotous backstage anecdotes about their experiences with him, as well as his larger-than-life personality and unstoppable libido. The most jaw-dropping story is about how he ramped up clean-cut Canadian singer Anne Murray's reputation and career by having her photographed with super-cool lothario Teddy Pendergrass. But with a life this high-flying, Shep has never found a life partner or had his own children. Although he has become a father figure to his ex-wife's kids, essentially raising them himself.

Supermensch: The Legend Of Shep Gordon Trailer

Shep Gordon may not be as famous as some of the biggest celebrities in the world, but you can bet they count him among their closest friends. A popular Jewish music manager who took on the career after meeting Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix, Shep's first subject was shock rocker Alice Cooper in 1965. Since then, his Hollywood career has exploded having also worked alongside the likes of Pink Floyd, Luther Vandross, Blondie, Ann Murray and others. Not only that, but Shep instigated the breakthrough of celebrity chefs and also become close personal friends with the 14th Dalai Lama during his venture into Buddhism. Now, though, after a life of luxury and living other people's lives, this 'mensch' as his star friends call him (a Yiddish word essentially meaning 'a good person') is looking for a life of his own.

Adam McKay Paul Rudd Evangeline Lilly Michael Douglas Edgar Wright

It's another is he-isn't he situations which will never truly be resolved unless Adam McKay chooses to take the position as Ant Man director, or it'll just remain another unconfirmed rumour. Ant Man has been in a state of development since 2003 and there still seems to be some troubles even with filming about to start this summer. With the film's initial director, Edgar Wright, walking out last week what will the future look like for the upcoming Marvel film?

Adam McKay
Adam McKay is rumoured to be in talks with Marvel.

Edgar Wright, who has been working on the movie's script since 2003, resigned last week over creative differences. Reports suggest Marvel changed Wright's script without his permission. Wright not only penned the screenplay but was also set to direct, leaving the Ant Man team in dire need of a director. As Variety reported, McKay was seemingly in talks with the film's producers and may be stepping in to take over from Wright.

Evangeline Lilly In Talks With Marvel For 'Ant-Man'

Evangeline Lilly Paul Rudd Michael Pena Michael Douglas

Ant-Man's love interest may be played by Evangeline Lilly. Lilly who has most recently appeared as the elf Tauriel in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, is rumoured to be in early talks with Marvel, according to Variety.

The 34-year-old actress could be, should talks prove successful and media outlets accurate, starring as the daughter of Hank Pym and the love interest of Scott Lang/Ant-Man in the 2015 Marvel film adaptation of their comic-book classic. Paul Rudd, best known for his comedic roles in Friends and Anchorman, is set to star as Ant-Man, a superhero who is able to change his size. Michael Douglas will be involved in the project and Michael Peña (Gangster Squad) is also rumoured to have been cast in the film.

In comic book lore, there have been three Ant-Men: the first being Hank Pym, a scientist who first discovers how to alter his size using a substance he creates. Pym, in the upcoming adaptation, will be played by Michael Douglas. Although Pym did not have a daughter in the comics (strangely Lang did) this may be director and co-writer Edgar Wright's new different approach to the film.

How Homophobic Were Jared Leto And Michael Douglas' Golden Globes Acceptance Speeches? [Video]

Jared Leto Michael Douglas

Jared Leto and Michael Douglas each won a Golden Globe award last night for their stand-out performances in very different films. Both actors' characters share the similarity of being part of the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) community with Leto's Rayon a transgender woman suffering with AIDS in Dallas Buyers Club and Douglas' gay Liberace lifted from real life in Behind The Candelabra.

With such high profile awards for what would have traditionally been controversial roles, the actors' wins mark a great leap forward for the portrayal of LGBT characters in movies and a move to eradicate homophobia and stereotyping in cinema. Whilst these positives cannot be denied, it has been noted in the wake of the initial glow and glamour of the awards that not every aspect of Leto and Douglas' win is cause for celebration.

Last Vegas Review

Very Good

An almost ridiculously strong cast and a witty script by the writer of Crazy Stupid Love make this silly film a lot more entertaining than it should be. As it playfully explores long friendships and the struggles of ageing, it turns into a four-sided bromance. So even if the film feels a little under-powered, it's still thoroughly charming.

At the centre are four lifelong buddies who are determined not to grow old. Paddy (De Niro) is trying to recover from grief over his wife's death, while Archie (Freeman) is tired of being fussed over by his son (Ealy) and Sam (Kline) hates living in a retirement community with his spirited wife (Gleason). So they jump on the chance to travel to Vegas for a stag weekend for their pal Billy (Douglas), who is marrying a woman (Blair) in her 30s. And getting together sparks their youthful sense of mischief as they plan a lavish party. Especially when two of them begin to fall for lounge singer Diana (Steenburgen).

Having five Oscar winners in the lead roles gives considerable oomph to the whole project, as these seasoned veterans bring out engaging details of their characters. Douglas has the safest role as a hapless lover-boy, while De Niro does the emotional heavy lifting and Kline endures the cheapest jokes (because his wife has given him a "free pass" for the weekend). Meanwhile, Freeman is clearly having the most fun: cool and relaxed with a naughty glint in his eye. And Steenburgen provides some badly needed female feistiness.

The nominations for the 2014 Golden Globe Awards were revealed this week and although there were few surprises in the movie nominations; in the television categories however, it's time for change in the established order of critically-acclaimed TV. Former nomination regulars like Mad Men and Homefront are nowhere to be seen in the nominees lists, replaced instead by the new order of critically-acclaimed shows.

Master of Sex and House of Cards now look like the shows to beat, with Breaking Bad making what will be its final appearance at the Golden Globes with the series ending this year. This comes just a year after Homeland achieved the impressive feat of winning Best Drama Series, Best Male Actor and Best Female Actor all in one night, although this does mark the second year in a row that the 2007-2009 winner Mad Men has not appeared in the Best Drama category.

'Thor: The Dark World' Dominates The Weekend Box Office With Impressive Opening Gross

Chris Hemsworth Tom Hiddleston Johnny Knoxville Michael Douglas Robert De Niro Harrison Ford

Thor: The Dark World almost became the top grossing November release of all time this weekend when it managed to bring in an estimated $86 million in the domestic market since its Friday (Nov 8) release in the USA. It narrowly missed out on beating the record set by Skyfall in 2012, but its numbers are nonetheless a fantastic result for studio bosses at Marvel and Disney.

Thor 2
Chris Hemsworth is back as the God of Thunder

Benefiting from the global blockbuster that was Marvel's The Avengers, much like Iron Man 3 did earlier this year, the estimated weekend takings of Thor 2 prove that there is still a great deal of life left in the superhero genre and despite lukewarm reviews, the film still has a keen and dedicated audience. The domestic performance from Thor 2 mirrors the similar successes enjoyed by the film in the international market, where it has already grossed $240.9 million. Thor was released a week earlier in a number of key international markets, including the United Kingdom and Australia, and has continued to perform well overseas.

Bill Murray On Letterman - He Was Always Going To Do SOMETHING

Bill Murray David Letterman Michael Douglas Matt Damon

Bill Murray certainly turned some heads on the 20th birthday episode of The Late Show with David Letterman when he arrived in style as Liberace. Well and truly pimped out in the same kind of extravagant gear Liberice was famous for. He then sat down with a little dog: nothing more than an accessory to his outlandish garms.

Letterman said: “Wow that was wonderful Bill. Delightful. I am delightful. I didn't know you had a dog.” Bill said: “I had to get something that went with this outfit.” The audience, of course, were loving all this. Bill told them: “You know I love you audience. I love you, but I dont have time tonight. ‘Cos Im only here for one reason,” before pointing at Letterman. (Daily Mail)

Murray was the first guest on Letterman's first show on CBS in August 1993 and also the first guest on Letterman's first late-night show on NBC in 1982. The pair have appeared together on the show some 25 times. He always has something prepared for any of the myriad Letterman shows he’s appeared on.

Liberace's Las Vegas Mansion Sells For Half A Million

Liberace Michael Douglas

The mansion once belonging to flamboyant pianist Liberace - who was recently portrayed by Michael Douglas in the film Behind the Candelabra - has been sold this week for just $500,000. Real estate agency Redfin reported that the property had sold at the beginning of the week (26 August) having been on the market for a number of years after falling into foreclosure in 2010. It was purchased by Englishman Martyn Ravenhill, a life-long Liberace fan.

Speaking with local magazine Get Surrey, based in his native England, Ravenhill described an immediate attachment he felt with the property when he first viewed it and said he felt compelled to buy the property as a celebration of his 50th birthday. Revealing that he flew from his home in Mexico to Vegas upon hearing the property was for sale, Ravenhill said, “Suddenly there I was walking around this place. Opening the door felt like home. There was a strange feeling of nostalgia to me. You could feel the history in the place as well. As we were walking around I already knew that I had to buy it to mark my 50th birthday. I have come to the realisation that you have to do things while you can and seize the moment.”

Billy, Paddy, Archie and Sam may well be getting on in years physically but, on the inside, they haven't changed in 40 years, so when Billy announces his engagement to a woman half his age, it's only right that they should celebrate with one hell of a party trip. They take to Vegas in what they hope is a wild weekend on the Strip; they were kids once, they understand how it's done, right? Well, things have changed a lot since 1959 and they're about to be outdone for the first time in their lives by a new, younger generation of party animals - or are they? This bunch of retirees may yet surprise you!

'Last Vegas' is like a wonderful reversed coming of age story that really hammers in a great message that young people and older people have a lot more in common than they think. It has been directed by Jon Turteltaub ('National Treasure', 'While You Were Sleeping', 'The Kid'), written by Adam Brooks ('Practical Magic', 'Definitely, Maybe', 'French Kiss') and Dan Fogelman ('Crazy, Stupid, Love', 'Cars', 'Tangled') and features an Oscar winning main cast of veteran stars. It is set to hit UK cinema screens on November 8th 2013.

Behind The Candelabra - Clips

An extraordinary tale of friendship and romance is set to hit our screens as the secret affair between world-class entertainer Liberace and his faithful young assistant Scott Thorson is brought to film. When Scott met the flamboyant pianist almost 40 years his senior, he was spellbound by the grandeur and luxury amidst which he lived. Equally, Liberace was charmed by the youth and beauty he saw in Scott and embraced him as a companion, a brother, a son and, later, his lover. However, the romance was not without its turmoil, with the couple regularly engaging in blazing rows mostly due to drugs and alcohol on Scott's part, the secrecy of their relationship and Liberace's shocking insistence that Scott undergo facial surgery to resemble a younger version of himself. Over their five year relationship, this unlikely pair went through every emotion possible while Liberace vehemently denied any passion between himself and his driver.

Behind The Candelabra Review

Extraordinary

This biopic about the pianist-showman Liberace may look almost painfully camp, and sometimes it is, but it's also a remarkably honest depiction of an intimate relationship. In the hands of Steven Soderbergh, the flaming excess is never made the butt of the joke; instead we get a strong dose of gritty humour, dark emotion and even a revealing look into the smoke and mirrors of show business. And the astute performances from both Douglas and Damon continually catch us off guard with their resonance.

It was 1977 when the 57-year-old entertainer (Douglas) met 17-year-old Scott Thorson (Damon). There was an instant spark as Liberace, known to his friends as Lee, offered Scott a job as a companion: on the stage, in his bed and running his household. But their relationship wasn't easy. Lee coaxed Scott into joining him under the knife of a plastic surgeon (Lowe) who reshaped Scott's face to look like a younger Liberace. Afterwards, Scott became addicted to a variety of drugs, which strained their romance to the breaking point. And it didn't help that Lee had an eye for ever-younger boys, all while insisting to the world that he was straight. "People see what they want to see," he said.

While the production design overflows with Liberace's "palatial kitsch" design sensibility, Soderbergh keeps the story and characters grounded, finding humour in unexpected places (Lowe's over-lifted face is hilarious). And despite the outrageous costumes and hair, the actors never camp up their performances, which cleverly holds the story in a delicate balance between sharp comedy and involving drama. In this sense, LaGravenese's script is particularly clever, peppering the dialog with telling details that gives us a remarkably well-rounded picture of the interaction between these men. And it continually resists becoming another stereotypical gay romance, celebrity biopic or drugs odyssey.

Steven Soderbergh lands in sunny Cannes this week with his HBO movie Behind the Candelabra, a biopic of the flamboyant pianist Liberace, played by Michael Douglas. The American entertainer's personal life was embroiled in scandal with rumors of homosexuality which he always vehemently denied - this despite his close relationship with a young chauffeur named Scott, 39-years his junior.

Scott, played by Matt Damon, becomes an important figure in the pianist's life and he is even persuaded to under facial surgery by the pianist. It led to a desperate struggle with drugs and various fiery arguments between the pair. "I didn't want to do a biopic in the traditional sense. I wanted to go narrow and deep," Soderbergh told the Los Angeles Times of the movie, "It's Alice going down the rabbit hole. That's a much more elegant way to get into Liberace's life." On his love scenes with Damon, Michael Douglas told the New York Magazine, "Once you get that first kiss in, you are comfortable.Matt and I didn't rehearse the love scenes. We said, 'Well - we've read the script, haven't we?"

'The Great Gatsby' Opening Cannes Doesn't Seem Like Such A Good Idea Anymore

Cannes Film Festival Steven Spielberg Leonardo Dicaprio Michael Douglas Coen Brothers James Gray Joaquin Phoenix Alexander Payne

The 2013 Cannes Film Festival will open on Wednesday (May 15, 2013) with Baz Luhrmann's 3-D version of The Great Gatsby, a throwback to the roaring twenties adapted from F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic book of the same name. The announcement caused unrest earlier in the year given that Gatsby would already have been released in the U.S by the time Cannes came round (it was released last week) though there's a couple of other things to worry about.

The Great Gatsby opened in the United States to fairly lacklustre reviews, dampening the buzz surrounding the start of the 12 day Cannes Film Festival. The critics have already seen it. The critics didn't like it very much. "This dreadful film even derogates the artistry of Fitzgerald, who wrote "The Great Gatsby" while living on Long Island and in Europe," said the Wall Street Journal. It holds a score of 48% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Nevertheless, champagne bottles will be popped, deals will be made and Harvey Weinstein will be wandering around deciding which movie to snap up as his next Oscar winner at this year's festival. Stars expected to attend include Michael Douglas, Matt Damon, Ryan Gosling, Emma Watson and the legendary Bollywood veteran Amitabh Bachan. "This is the hardest 10 days of the year for me. There are always three or four movies that are exceptional and you have to find them so it is a detective job," said Tom Bernard, co-president and co-founder of Sony Pictures Classics.
