Trespass Against Us Is A 'Slap In The Face'

Michael Fassbender

Michael Fassbender went back to his British roots for intense crime drama 'Trespass Against Us', after becoming fascinated with how the unique story ran its course. The directorial feature debut of Adam Smith, it was the original construct of the plot and the character interaction that drew the Oscar nominee to the project.

Michael FassbenderMichael Fassbender stars in 'Trespass Against Us'

'It didn't adhere to any real formula', Fassbender mused in an interview. 'The way the characters were with one another and just how the story itself is quite a simple one but we're dealing with pretty interesting dilemmas for this family... There was just so much there but it never felt like it was preaching anything or giving the answers to anything but I thought it was just like a slap in the face. Just a very honest and visceral story.'

Alien: Covenant Trailer

Ten years after the disastrous expedition that was Prometheus, another group of space explorers band together on the ship Covenant, hoping to uncover a previously untrodden paradise. Among them are Daniels, an expert in terraforming, and Walter, a synthetic android who looks like a replica of David though much more advanced. Unfortunately, the paradise they hoped for doesn't exist and instead they bump into David himself who is 'living' in a world full of terrifying creatures. The face huggers are back, the xenomorph is definitely back, and there is a sickness that threatens to engulf them all.

Perhaps a dark prophecy of what's to come lies in the 'Last Supper' clip, where one of the crew members, Faris, starts apparently choking on her food as the pilot jokes, 'The food's not that bad'. The scene and the words themselves hearken back to the famous chestburster scene from the original 1979 film, where Kane suffers a grisly alien attack during the final meal before cryostasis. Thankfully, this time was just a minor choking incident, and Walter was on hand to save his team member.

'Alien: Covenant' is the second part in the new prequel series for the franchise, and the sequel to 2012's 'Prometheus'. Directed by the Oscar nominated Ridley Scott ('Blade Runner', 'The Martian') with a screenplay by John Logan ('Penny Dreadful', 'Spectre'), it has already made 7th place in the Most Anticipated Films of 2017 in the Indiewire Critics' Poll. The trailer features a sensationally eerie cover of Nat King Cole's 'Nature Boy' by Norwegian singer-songwriter Aurora, and the film is set to be released on May 19th 2017.

So Dwayne Johnson was named People's Sexiest Man Alive this year; a decision that has been the source of both praise and confusion. Praise because he's an excellent role model with enormous muscles and because he's mixed race, and confusion because all the obvious choices haven't been exhausted yet.

Here are ten more Hollywood heartthrobs who deserve to be named 'Sexiest Man Alive' sooner rather than later.

It's St. Patrick's Day! Here's 10 Irish Actors Who Made It Big In Hollywood

Michael Fassbender Chris O'Dowd Colin Farrell Saoirse Ronan

In celebration of St. Patrick's Day, we recognise some of the world's top Irish actors and the impact they've had on the Hollywood film industry. The list could go on forever of course, but these are just a few whose performances on the big screen have stuck with us.

Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone! Today (March 17th) is the day that the Irish celebrate the life of the Patron Saint of Ireland, usually by drinking Guinness and wearing silly hats with shamrocks on. It's not a holiday very well understood to people outside of Ireland and, indeed, even less so outside the UK. However, we've decided to weigh in on the festivities by honouring some of the world's favourite Irish people - namely, actors that have risen to Hollywood stardom.

Steve Jobs Review

Extraordinary

Sidestepping arguments about accuracy, writer Aaron Sorkin and director Danny Boyle take an artistic, impressionistic approach to this biopic about the iconic Apple founder. Using a structure that would work perfectly on stage, the film tells his story through just three extended scenes. In the process, it reveals even more about human nature than it does about Steve Jobs or the tech business.

The first segment is set in 1984, as Steve (Michael Fassbender) is about to launch the game-changing Macintosh computer with cofounder Steve Wozniak (Seth Rogen), marketing expert Joanna Hoffman (Kate Winslet) and developer Andy Hertsfeld (Michael Stuhlbarg). As he organises the launch event to within an inch of its life, he's interrupted by his ex-girlfriend Chrisann (Katherine Waterston), but Steve still refuses to accept that her 5-year-old daughter is his. He also has an important conversation with the Apple chairman John Sculley (Jeff Daniels) just before going on-stage. This same scenario is repeated two more times, at the 1988 launch of NeXT and at the 1998 launch of the iMac, tracing Steve's fierce business acumen, complex interaction with his colleagues, and his evolving connection with his daughter.

Fassbender bravely never hedges his bets as Jobs, finding a tricky balance in an innovator who changed the world but never quite made sense of his personal or professional relationships. This is a man who is likeable and cruel at the same time, eliciting both laughter and gasps of horror from the audience. Fassbender's kinetic energy is hugely engaging, matched cleverly by Winslet's Hoffman, the only person with whom Jobs speaks about his own flaws. With both Rogen's generous Wozniak and Stuhlbarg's determined Hertzfeld, Jobs is much more dismissive, although there's respect under the surface. And its the literate banter with Daniels' thoughtful Sculley that gives the film its brainy kick, especially as it's so inventively written and directed to weave conversations right into flashbacks.

'Pan' Bombs At US Box Office, As 'The Martian' Holds Tight

Hugh Jackman Matt Damon Rooney Mara Michael Fassbender

Pan has failed to take flight at the box office this weekend, debuting with a disappointing estimated $15.5 million total and taking third place. Joe Wright’s retelling of the classic tale stars newcomer Levi Miller as Peter Pan and Hugh Jackman as Captain Blackbeard.

Pan was rolled out in more than 3,500 US theatres this weekend, but studio Warner Bros will be hoping it does better when it hits more markets. The film, which cost over $150 million to make, had been scheduled to hit cinemas back in July, but was pushed back earlier this year.

For Michael Fassbender, Playing Steve Jobs Was A No Brainer

Michael Fassbender Steve Jobs Danny Boyle Aaron Sorkin

Since Apple founder Steve Jobs died in 2011, there have been two films about his life. First was 2011's Jobs, starring Ashton Kutcher, which flopped with the critics and at the box office. And now Danny Boyle and Aaron Sorkin are taking a stab at it with the festival hit starring Michael Fassbender. It's titled, cleverly, Steve Jobs.

Michael Fassbender in 'Steve Jobs'Michael Fassbender aimed to capture the spirit of Steve Jobs in the new movie

After Christian Bale had to drop out of the role, Fassbender was surprised to be offered the part. "I got approached by Danny Boyle," he says. "He sent me the script and asked me if I was interested. I read the script and it's amazing writing - amazing - and Danny's a phenomenal director, and just a wonderful person. So I jumped on board. It's really that simple."

Michael Fassbender has admitted he thinks Christian Bale would have been ‘perfect’ to play Steve Jobs in Danny Boyle’s biopic of the late Apple founder. Bale was originally signed on to the project but left last November, with Fassbender then being brought in as his replacement.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter Fassbender said, "I thought to myself: Christian Bale is perfect, why isn’t he doing it? I actually called him up and told him that myself.”

Macbeth Teams Michael Fassbender And Marion Cotillard

Michael Fassbender Marion Cotillard

In between his high-profile roles in Slow West, Steve Jobs and the forthcoming X-Men: Apocalypse, Michael Fassbender took time out to shoot a gritty new version of Shakespeare's Macbeth with Australian filmmaker Justin Kurzel. "While on a big film you've got all the options in the world open to you," he says. "But on a small film even getting it made is a hard thing. I love how fast you have to work - that pressure of having to get it right in one take or not at all."

Fassbender's only previous experience with Shakespeare was in drama school. "Shakespeare is challenging because of the language," he says. "And Macbeth is going through quite a lot!"

Macbeth Review

Very Good

Shakespeare's Scottish play returns to the big screen with earthy energy, visual style and roaring performances. Acclaimed Australian filmmaker Justin Kurzel (Snowtown) takes an artistic approach that makes terrific use of sweeping landscapes and harsh weather, which allows the cast to put their guts into their roles. Yet while the film looks absolutely amazing, the sound mix is so muddled that anyone unfamiliar with the play will find it difficult to follow.

Michael Fassbender plays Macbeth, an 11th century general who has just triumphed on the Highland battlefield but is struggling internally after he and Lady Macbeth (Marion Cotillard) lost their infant child. So when three witches tell him that he is destined to become king, his wife encourages him to make it happen sooner rather than later. In secret, Macbeth murders King Duncan (David Thewlis) and pins the blame on his son Malcolm (Jack Reynor), who flees in fear, raising suspicion. Now on the throne, King and Queen Macbeth are overwhelmed by paranoia about any hint of a threat to their power, raising distrust of loyal friends like Banquo (Paddy Considine) and Duncan's defender Macduff (Sean Harris). Meanwhile, Malcolm has raised an army in England and is coming back to claim his title.

This is one of Shakespeare's bleakest, leanest plays, and Kurzel gives it an intriguingly expansive tone by setting most of the action outdoors in the elements rather than in shadowy castle corridors. In addition to adding a gritty, muddy kick, this allows the battle sequences to take on a Lord of the Rings-scale intensity. So the effect of this violence on the characters is that much more resonant. Lady Macbeth turns inward, tormenting herself in an extended dream sequence, while Macbeth goes the other way, killing anyone who seems even remotely shifty. But of course they also understand that their ambition and guilt are causing these extreme reactions.

Michael Fassbender Hopes Schoolchildren Will Be Inspired By His 'Macbeth'

“Shakespeare is a genius. The one thing I kept saying to Justin is, ‘If we can inspire the kids, that would be wonderful,” Fassbender said. “It’s an arrogant thing for me to presume that they weren’t already inspired by it but I’m talking from my own experience.”

Ridley Scott Intends To Make Three More 'Prometheus' Movies

Ridley Scott Michael Fassbender Noomi Rapace

Fans of the Alien franchise who were left slightly confused by Prometheus a few years ago can rest easy that everything will be explained – eventually. Director Ridley Scott has claimed that he wants to make three sequels to Prometheus, at the end of which the storyline will link into the Alien narrative.

Scott, 77, told German entertainment website FilmFutter that the two franchises would eventually dovetail into one another when he was asked about Prometheus 2, which is not due for release for another couple of years. It will see Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace return to reprise the roles they occupied for the 2012 original.

“It will not be the next [film]” the director said. “It will be in the next but one Prometheus or perhaps even in a later film, before we are, in a sense, back in the Alien franchise.”

Steve Jobs Trailer

Steve Jobs is widely regarded as a pioneer in the age of technology, making the computer accessible to all with his billionaire organisation Apple Inc. Though as much as he was a genius, he made a lot of enemies on his way to fame, fortune and recognition while relying on his skilled best friend Steve Wozniak. He refused to co-operate with much of the staff at Apple including CEO John Sculley, and henceforth detached himself from the company, but meanwhile his personal life was no more amicable. Refusing to be a father to his college girlfriend Chrisann Brennan's daughter Lisa and denying all paternity shone a bad light on him in the eyes of his family, his colleagues and the public especially when paternity was proven. But upon his return to Apple came a new man, humbled by his previous behaviour and willing to be both a father and a fair businessman. But of all the sacrifices he made to make Apple great, his health suffered most of all.

Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender and Olivia Munn were among the stars who participated in a special live reading of the script for cult classic movie The Big Lebowski at the Just For Laughs comedy festival in Montreal. But it all very nearly ended in disaster when a flub by Olivia Munn almost threw the whole star-studded cast off.

Wait, Is 'Slow West' The Best Movie Of 2015 So Far?

Michael Fassbender

Slow West is kind of a slow burner. In terms of the attention it's receiving in Hollywood anyway. The release of John M. McLean's modern western has snuck up on us with little fanfare, though the critics are lauding the movie, which boasts a particularly strong performance from one Michael Fassbender.

Michael Fassbender has always wanted to be in a cowboy movie, so he leapt at the chance to reunite with first-time feature writer-director John Maclean. The two previously worked together for three days on the 2009 short Man on a Motorcycle, so Fassbender came on board Slow West not only as an actor but also as a producer.

Maclean wrote the role specifically for Fassbender, who helped develop the script before filming began. "It was nice to see that journey through," Fassbender says, "as this was an idea that he'd had brewing for a good few years."
