The self-lacing Nike Mags shoes were featured in the hit 1989 film and are now on sale on auction website Invaluable.com.

They are expected to fetch as much as $50,000 (£31,250).

The listing reads, "Pair of custom-made Nike brand Mags shoes worn by Michael J. Fox as Marty MCFly in the second installment of the popular Back to the Future trilogy... These represent only the second pair of Nike Mags we have encountered and are the finer of the two. Sympathetically restored to stabilize the shoes. In vintage fine condition."

The auction is part of a Profiles in History sale.

The shoes became iconic after they were worn by Michael in his role as Marty MCFly in the second movie.

After arriving in the future, which happens to be the year 2015, Marty is given the shoes to wear so he can blend in with other teenagers of the era.

The news comes amid a slew of celebrations marking the 2015 milestone.

Michael's co-star Christopher Lloyd has reprised his role as Doc Brown for a new short film, which will be released on 21 October (15).

The date is the day Marty and Doc arrived in the future from 1985.
