Stephen Hawking biopic The Theory of Everything landed 10 nods, with Eddie Redmayne installed as the favourite to win Best Actor. He will face competition in that category from Michael Keaton, whose movie Birdman also received 10 nominations at the announcement on Friday morning (January 9, 2014). Benedict Cumberbatch and Jake Gyllenhaal round out that category, though David Oyelowo - the British star who plays Martin Luther King in Selma - was not nominated. In fact, the critically acclaimed movie failed to pick up a single nod.

Another surprisingly omission was Mike Leigh's Mr Turner, a biopic of the British artist featuring a tour-de-force performance from Timothy Spall. The actor picked up the best actor award at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year though the film failed to secure a single nomination for the biggest night in British film.

Richard Linklater's Boyhood - the frontrunner for Best Picture at the Oscars - pulled in just 5 nominations though all were in major categories including best director and best film.

Rosamund Pike will fancy her chances in the category for best actress - her crazed performance in Gone Girl is pitted against similarly strong turns from Felicity Jones, Reese Witherspoon, Julianne Moore and Amy Adams.

The EE Rising Star award will go to either Shailene Woodley, Jack O'Connell, Margot Robbie, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Miles Teller. Unbroken's O'Connell is the heavily favoured to win.

The Baftas, once again hosted by Stephen Fry, will take place on Sunday 8 February at the Royal Opera House, London.
