Jesse Helt, 22, the homeless man who was asked by Miley Cyrus to collect an award for her at the MTV Music Video Awards, is wanted by police in his home state of Oregon. Millions watched on Sunday as Helt collected the award for 'video of the year' for Miley's Wrecking Ball, with the former Disney star wanting to raise awareness about homelessness among young people.

In his speech, Helt said: "I've survived in shelters all over. I've cleaned your hotels rooms, I've been an extra in your movies, I've been an extra in your life.

"Though I may have been invisible to you in the streets, I have many of the same dreams that brought many of you here tonight."

However, it has since emerged that there is a warrant out for Helt's arrest, related to a probation violation in 2011 when he failed to report to his probation officer following an arrest for criminal trespass.

Helt has since moved to Los Angeles to seek work as a model though his mother Linda has given a newspaper interview saying that he had flown back to be with his family after Cyrus gave him money for a plane ticket. He was not at the house at the time.

Earlier, in 2010, Helt was arrested after breaking into an apartment but told police it was because a man had sold him bad marijuana.

Cyrus has defended her friend on Twitter, saying, "People who are homeless have lived very hard lives. Jesse included.

"I hope that this can be the start of a national conversation about youth homelessness and how to end it."

"While they [the media] obsesses over one homeless mans [sic] legal issue lets help the other 1.6 million homeless youth."

According to the Telegraph, the pair met when Cyrus visited a homeless youth centre called My Friend's Place.
