Naomi Watts is the latest star to join the already-impressive cast of the 'Divergent' film franchise.

The Australian actress has signed on to play a major role in the next three film instalments of the sci-fi series, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Watts will star in 'Insurgent,' which is due out next year, and 'Allegiant,' the third and final book in the Veronica Roth series that will be separated into two separate films, due out in 2016 and 2017.

THR confirms that the 45 year-old will portray Evelyn, the leader of the Factionless.

Watts will be joining fellow newcomer Octavia Spence, who will play Johanna, the leader of the Amity faction, very soon as filming for the hotly anticipated sequel began in Atlanta last week. Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Ansel Elgort, Kate Winslet and Miles Teller are all expected reprise their roles from the first movie.

German filmmaker Robert Schwentke will be directing 'Insurgent,' taking over from Neil Burger, from a screenplay written by Brian Duffield and Akiva Goldsman.

'Divergent' earned over $250 million at the global box office, thus giving the film studio a successful successor to the hugely popular 'Hunger Games' film series.

Watts will be added to a plot that follows a teenage girl named Beatrice "Tris" Prior (Woodley) and centers around her extraordinary circumstances, as she becomes aware that there is no one else like her.
