Lauryn Hill Nas

What looks to be one of the most anticipated tours of the year kicks off this Fall with the legendary Ms. Lauryn Hill joing rap hero Nas in seventeen different cities across all of North America. The pair have previously worked together way back in the 90s, but now they are back for a stage bonanza - literally - with two special guests.

It has been almost twenty years since the multi-Grammy Award winning Lauryn Hill released her first and only solo album 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill' following her time with The Fugees, and longer since she and Nas collaborated on the 1996 single 'If I Ruled the World (Imagine That)' from the latter's second album 'It Was Written'. But they are uniting once again for a series of US and Canada performance dates.

Nas: Time Is Illmatic Trailer

With a jazz musician for a father, Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones grew up in a world of music. Knowing from an early age that he wanted to become a rapper, he took a look at the bleak world around him and set to work on writing an album that would deliver a voice to the unheard generation of young black men in America. The result was 'Illmatic', a 1994 landmark that heralded the second coming of the Golden Era of hip hop and a revival of New York's rap scene.

The nature of the subject is about surviving and thriving,” said Tribeca Film Festival co-founder Jane Rosenthal. “That’s what New York did post-9/11,” when Rosenthal, Robert De Niro and Craig Hatkoff held the first Tribeca fest. “And that’s what Nas has done in his career. It’s about bridging cultures and bridging communities — that’s what his work is about.”

If you’re at Coachella this year, you won’t be reading this story and if you are… well, this might just make things worse, but here’s a rundown of the best things you’re missing anyway. Saturday saw a huge dust storm rip through Coachella Valley on Saturday, but diehard fans stuck it out anyway for Muse’s headlining gig. The English rockers performed festival staples like "Hysteria," "Resistance," and "Magic," but a large portion of the Coachella crowd left the field early as high winds swept sand and dust across the festival field, Reuters reports.

Wireless Festival, Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z – a match made in heaven as far as festival organizers, reporters, fans – all those involved really – are concerned. The pair are splitting up the headlining duties on the three nights of the festival between the two of them, with Justin having performed last night and bringing in Jay for an encore. Tonight it’ll be Hova who takes center stage, as Timberlake only comes on for a couple of tracks. On Sunday, they will share the main stage at the festival for an entire set.

Something From Nothing: The Art Of Rap Trailer

Hip hop has always been more of a culture than just a genre of music. It represents a huge portion of the marginalised world of America and how they managed to create something from nothing; how their lifestyle and previously buried literary talents created a culture that has inspired millions. The frontman of rap/ metal band Body Count Ice-T takes his audience on the road to visit the founding fathers, the major superstars and the rising stars of the rap genre including Afrika Bambaataa, Eminem, Nas, Mos Def, Kanye West, Chuck D, Krs-One, Snoop Dogg, Run-DMC, Dr. Dre and Ice Cube and discover the skill and feeling behind what has made them international music heroes. One of the frequent interviewees is Grandmaster Caz who we are taken to visit on several occasions as he writes a new set of rhymes called 'The Art Of Rap'.

Directed by Ice-T with help from Andy Baybutt, 'Something From Nothing: The Art Of Rap' is a feature length music documentary delving into what goes into making the seminal hip hop records that have dominated music since the late '70s. It came about when producer Paul Toogood asked Ice-T the simplest of question which the star had never before been asked: How did he write seminal tracks such as '6 In The Mornin' and 'Colors'?

Featuring: Common, Ice Cube, Chuck D, Mos Def, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Eminem, Nas, Kanye West, Darryl McDaniels, KRS-One, Big Daddy Kane

Can't Vote, Won't Vote, But Lil' Wayne's Got The US Elections Sussed Anyway

Lil Wayne Barack Obama Nas Jay Z

Lil Wayne might not be able to vote, but he’s still going to make his feelings known about the forthcoming US elections. He’s been doing his research into the two candidates, Barack Obama and Mitt Romney though, frankly, we’re not sure which way Lil’ Wayne’s swinging on this one.

Wayne isn’t eligible to vote in the elections, thanks to a 2007 conviction for gun crime.  He’s made sure that he’s done a little bit of research on the candidates though, so that whoever the rest of the US voting public lumber him with, he can at least feel that he has the measure of the man. “That's all I can do from a personal standpoint," he told MTV News. "I can't vote, so all I can do is figure out who these people are and whoever you guys choose at least I know a little bit about them.” And for Wayne, the person is as important as the politics, it seems: “I am paying attention to it and you know for me following it meaning I kinda did my research on who both of these people were and not really about what they're talking about or what they're politicking about... but just to figure out who these people are.”

Virgin FreeFest: Jack White, Skrillex And Nas Rule The Stage.

Jack White Skrillex Nas

Now in its 6th year, the Virgin Mobile FreeFest returned to the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD, just outside Baltimore, and sported two starkly contrasting headliners; Jack White and Skrillex. Plus a great variety of other brilliant bands and artists that graced the stage all in the aid of free music and philanthropy.

This year over 50,000 fans flooded the Merriweather Post Pavilion for the exceptional lineup. For Wesley Case, at the Baltimore Sun, it was Jack White's own contrasts within his set that made the White Stripes star and his performance truly shine. Case said "[Jack White] made a loud arrival, violently strumming his guitar in time with the drums... But it was the quieter moments that stood out. He shared a sensual moment with his tambourine player as they both sang into his microphone." He ended his set with Seven Nation Army, perhaps the most iconic of his releases and one that spurs crowds into a unity of hums.

A Week In Music Featuring: Nas, Bat For Lashes, Efterklang, Gaggle, The Weeknd And Much More!

Albums of Note… Copenhagen band Efterklang release Piramida, an album named after a Norwegian ghost town. Befitting of such a theme, the music itself falls somewhere between Brian Eno, Sigur Ros and The Blue Nile. Though they're writing about a town full of ugly abandoned Cold War-era buildings, Efterklang have somehow instilled Piramida with "an atmosphere of warmth" and our reviewer was so impressed, he went so far as to say that they write songs that are "everything you'd love an Elbow song to actually sound like." "With the pop world and everything else now divided beyond conciliation, what was once perceived as avant garde is now just another way of working."

A Week In Music - October 28, 2012

Are they a choir? Or just a ridiculously large indie pop band? Whatever they are, the twenty women that make up Gaggle have crafted a fine album in From The Mouth of The Cave. The debut album from this unusual group is never dull and combined, their voices have some serious dramatic potential: "20 plus women joining together in a deliberately paired back drum and vocal delivery about being wronged, abused, deceived, damaged and pained is a formidable thing." "From The Mouth Of The Cave' is a challenging album from Gaggle. It is an experience and at times it can be hard work. it break(s) certain boundaries and above all it shows a great deal of promise for what else might yet come from the most unconventional girl group on the planet."

Posthumous nominations include Whitney Houston for best gospel inspirational performance and Amy Winehouse for best international performance. New Edition will receive a lifetime achievement award. A Coup For American Idol, But Is Nicki Minaj’s New Job A Boost For Hip-Hop?

Nicki Minaj Wiz Khalifa Lil Wayne Dr Dre Nas

Nicki Minaj’s decision to join the American Idol judging panel will undoubtedly do wonders for her own career but will could other rappers expect the same success if they tried to pull a similar move? Wiz Khalifa told MTV News he could judge another singing competition, if Nicki can manage the Idol crowd. Some industry insiders seem to be in agreement, others aren’t so sure that Nicki’s latest career development will do much for hip-hop as a whole.

Karen Civil - author of her own blog and the woman in charge of running the social media accounts for the likes of Lil Wayne and Dr. Dre’s Beats By Dre headphone company – reckons that Wiz would do a good job of joining a TV talent show. “I can see Wiz hosting one of these shows,” said Karen, though she did add a cautionary comment, saying “even though he smokes a lot.” Karen also reckons that Nicki’s addition to American Idol is a double-win. As well as Nicki opening herself up to a new audience, Karen says “They need her, they need her audience, she's a very popular person and her fans are going to tune into everything that she does, so that equals viewership for them.”

Brian Miller of RapRadar.com isn’t so sure that Nicki’s success would translate so well to all rappers though. He makes the valid point that recent Nicki Minaj songs have had strong pop-crossover potential. Not all rappers have this. “I don't think Nas would ever get $8 million for judging someone in a hip-hop competition, you have to be a pop star to acquire that kind of money," he said. "If you're not in a pop lane, you're never going to ever get this kind of exposure or these kind of crossover looks.” And we’re inclined to agree.

Slew Of Collaborators Included On Nelly Furtado’s “Buffet Approach” To New Album ‘Loose’

Nelly Furtado Nas Passion Pit

Nelly Furtado has certainly dipped her toe in plenty of different styles during her time in the music industry, and it’s as much thanks to the people she’s opened up to and worked with as it is her own eclectic tastes as an artist. True to form, her fifth album The Spirit Indestructible looks like it’s going to mark another change in direction for the 33 year-old Canadian, featuring as it does Nas on one track among other collaborators.

Talking to MTV, Furtado praised her producer Salaam Remi for his involvement in the album and said it was him who passed on her track Something to the rapper. “He loved it” she said of Nas’ reaction, before enthusing “It wasn't until I was finally sending in my liner notes to the label and handing in my lyrics that I had to ask Salaam for Nas' rap... It's one thing listening to Nas rap, but then when you see his words on paper, you really see what a poet he is. And I'm happy he's on the album."

With Passion Pit front man Michael Angelakos also involved in the project among others, Furtado admitted that she takes what she describes as a “buffet approach” to her albums. "I just kind of want it all on every album” she said, adding “I think this album is sort of a combination of all my sounds. I think this new album is totally spiritual in this really not obvious kind of way. I love songs that make you move your body, but sort of have a deeper meaning to them."

Nas Called Off Tour To Be By His Mother's Side As She Died

Nas

Nas, the rapper behind the landmark hip hop album, 'Illmatic', revealed that a lot of his inspiration was the pain he felt from the loss of his mother after she died of cancer, following a three year battle, in 2002. Nasir Jones, also known by his stage name Nas, had a very strong relationship with his mother, Anne - this being greatly increased by her separation from his father when he was 12-year-old in 1985.

She was someone who was there to take care of me and my brother and really be there for us and really be concerned about us." Nas revealed that he was glad to be with his mother before her death in April, 2002.
