Clockenflap - 29 November 2015 Live Review

It's Monday morning and my bones hurt. I'm tired, hung-over, and there's a slight ringing in my ears. It's time for work. The pit-falls of Sunday at Clockenflap are that Monday comes round just as it would any other week and Hong Kong works hard. Luckily for Clockenflap it plays hard too.

Clockenflap - 29 November 2015 Live Review

In its eighth year Clockenflap continues to get bigger, but still has a small and very relaxed feeling which lulls you into things. As the temperature soars and people begin to regret their choice of 'cold weather' clothing the beer tents swell and the music starts to take hold. On the YourMum stage local noise-rock group Prune Deer begin to draw in a small crowd by the end of their blistering set. The sound quality here is fantastic and between their fierce riffs and spacey breaks they show why they're one of Hong Kong's most promising young bands. The stage line-up is one of the best of the day; with the bunny-mask donning Sleep Party People throwing a crowd-surf friendly set full of lynchian loveliness and Japanese weird-out kings Bo Ningen melting plenty of faces; definitely two bands worth checking out. Bo Ningen need to be seen to be believed, vocalist Taigen Kawabe is mesmerising as a front-man, between his supersonic ramblings and what we can only describe as a death-squeal, you really need to see the quartet for yourself.

After a recommendation we went to checkout Shugo Tokumaru who was a delightful discovery. Another Japanese artist, Tokumaru's delicate indie-pop was perfect under the sun. His charming multi-instrumental compositions were endearingly performed by a full live-band. If you like the sassier side of Belle and Sebastian or the uplifting naivety of The Shins then this one's for you.

Iggy Pop Plays Joy Division Classics With New Order At Tibet Concert

Iggy Pop New Order JOY DIVISION

Iggy Pop was backed by New Order for a rendition of classic JOY DIVISION tracks including Love Will Tear Us Apart at the 24th Annual Tibet House US Benefit Concert at New York's Carnegie Hall on Tuesday night (March 11, 2014).

Iggy PopIggy Pop Played 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' With New Order

New Order were always slated to appear at the concert, but gig-goers were treated to a surprise appearance from Iggy, who played frontman for the evening. Bernard Sumner and other members of the current New Order guise backed the punk legend through the set, which raised money for a charity that fights to preserve Tibetan culture.

What, No Holograms? Stone Roses, Blur, Phoenix, Red Hot Chili Peppers Headline Coachella 2013

Coachella Blur Stone Roses Yeah Yeah Yeahs Modest Mouse Lou Reed Jurassic 5 Phoenix The XX New Order Nick Cave Grinderman Wu Tang Clan Social Distortion Tupac Shakur

How do you top having a dead man headline your festival? Well, in all honestly, you’re not going to. Coachella’s talent bookers must have been scratching their heads in bewilderment when it came to topping last year’s Tupac hologram and they’ve done the best they can, given the lack of deceased artists willing and able to play Coachella 2013.

The two Friday nights (the festival takes place both on April 12 – 14 and April 19 – 21) are looking like a highlight for fans of the Britpop revival, with Blur and Stone Roses lending a very British end to the evening. A newly invigorated Yeah Yeah Yeahs (well, Karen O’s dyed her hair blonde, does that count?) also play the Friday, as well as Modest Mouse, Lou Reed and Jurassic 5. Saturday has the French band Phoenix headlining, in support of their recently-announced new album. They’ll be preceded by British electronic gloom-pop band The XX, as well as Postal Service and New Order. The line-up for the Sunday nights is a slightly heavier one, with Red Hot Chili Peppers headlining, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds making yet another return (Cave will be raking it in that weekend, as his other band Grinderman also play the Fridays), Social Distortion and Wu Tang Clan.

Coachella always has an impressive array of legendary / stalwart alternative acts as well as the hottest new bands you’ve only just heard of. What they haven’t got, is anything that’s going to grab the headlines, or the public’s attention in the same way that Tupac’s hologram did.

Out Now: UK Album Releases: Les Miserables OST A Sure-Fired Hit, Everything Everything Gunning For Success, New Order Album Finally Sees Light Of Day

Hugh Jackman Everything Everything New Order Villagers

We’re still in a period of calm for the music industry, as far as album releases go. What this does mean for those that do release albums at the start of the year, however, is that they tend to get more attention than they may otherwise do.

Of course, with last night’s Golden Globes success, the Hollywood version of Les Miserables is hardly sat quietly in the corner begging for attention. Having taken home the Best Motion Picture – Comedy Or Musical award, as well as Best Actor for Hugh Jackman, all eyes are on the musical which has been widely tipped for an Oscar and no doubt that will translate to album sales in the UK as it has done in the US, too.
