Grossing more than $540 million and becoming the 10th-biggest animated motion picture in U.S. history, the first Despicable Me movie – starring Steve Carell as the hilarious Gru – was a hit with the critics, garnering an overall review score of 81% on Rotten Tomatoes. This picture isn’t fairing too badly either, even if the current 100% rating is sure to drop to something we used to; a solid 80% perhaps?

The critics are saying it lacks the charm of the first, but it’s still brilliant. “While not quite as charming or unique as the original, "Despicable Me 2" comes awfully close, extending co-directors Chris Renaud and Pierre Coffin's delightfully silly sensibility to a bit larger universe,” say Variety. Similarly, The Hollywood Reporter say: “While the new edition doesn't quite catch that inspired spark, there's still plenty to enjoy here courtesy of those zippy visuals and a pitch-perfect voice cast led by the innately animated Steve Carell."
