The success of Twilight has unfortunately brought with it a rather upsetting statistic, and that is that dog/wolf cross breeds are being abandoned by their owners at an alarming rate, UK canine charity Dogs Trust has said.

Fans off the supernatural saga have been drawn to cute wolf-life puppies such as Huskies, Malamutes and Akitas, in a bid to have a little Jacob Black - the lycanthropic character played by Taylor Lautner - of their own. However these fans clearly underestimated the care and attention that is required by these dogs when they get old and as a result the unfortunate hounds have become the burden of dog shelters across the country at an alarming rate. So far this year, the canine charity has had nearly 100 Huskies, 35 Akitas and 16 Malamutes handed over to its 18 re-homing shelters scattered across the country, with the trend showing no signs of slowing down any time soon.

These types of dog greatly need an active lifestyle and with a number of suburban homes buying the dog, most cannot provide this kind of care, thus prompting the current situation. Lynn Barber, a training and behavioural adviser at the Dogs Trust, which cares for about 16,000 dogs a year, has told the press: “These dogs are gorgeous creatures and can make wonderful companions, but they need owners who know the breed and are willing to commit to them."
