The news was announced on Friday (28th August) and although few details have been released, it already looks as though Borderlands could be produced on a blockbuster scale. As Variety reports, father and son team Avi and Ari Arad are producing. The pair have worked on such films as Iron Man, Spiderman and X-Men.
Borderlands is a video game set on the fictional planet Pandora. In an attempt to overtake their competitors, the Atlas Company working on the planet utilised alien technology they had discovered in ‘The Vault’. Unfortunately for Atlas and the Dahl Corporation, who had helped settlers move to the planet, as soon as the planet’s spring season arrived new and reawakened alien life began to appear. Borderlands is set after the two companies have left the planet, leaving the desperate and vulnerable former settlers – and a group of freed convicts - to deal with the deadly alien life.
The game, created by Gearbox Software, was released in 2009. The game was a successful and two spin-off games have been created. The sequel, Borderlands 2, was released in 2012 and a prequel to the second game was released in October 2014.
Lionsgate have been making a concerted effort to branch out into videogame storylines. A spokesperson for Lionsgate explained how the company had chosen Borderlands because it has been hugely successful and will attract a wider audience.
The publishers of Borderlands, Take-Two Interactive, have also issued a statement in which they said they believed the film would be a success with the winning formula of a successful franchise and renowned producers.
“Lionsgate has emerged as a major creative force in the global marketplace with an incredible portfolio of brands; our partners at Gearbox have pioneered and cultivated an iconic property; and Avi and Ari Arad are two of the most successful producers of action franchises,” Strauss Zelnick (Take-Two’s Interactive Chairman and CEO) said.
“This alliance is ideally positioned to create a bold, provocative, no-holds-barred motion picture phenomenon that will delight Borderlands current legions of fans and captivate moviegoers around the world.”
