The ninth season of reality dancing contest So You Think You Can Dance drew to a close last night on American TV (September 18th) with the judges throwing a great twist to the audience right at the end. A two hour episode saw the four finalists, ballet dancers Eliana Gerard and Chehon Wespi-Tschopp as well as jazz dancer Tiffany Maher and robotics/animator Cyrus ‘Glitch’ Spencer revisiting routines performed earlier in the season in the race to impress the six judges.
It was a fiercely contested competition from a group of young and hungry dancers – not one was over 22 years old – who first of all performed the judges favorite routines from the entire season, before coming back and reprising their own personal favorites. Cat Deeley also picked a routine for them to perform whilst there was a singing performance by current pop superstar Carly Rae Jepsen.
When it came to the crunch though, the judges made history by, for the first time in the show’s history, picking two winners! They both came from the ballet style of dancing, with Gerard and Wespi-Tschopp being announced the champions. It is the first time that a dancer performing the ballet style has won the competition during its seven years on television. It’s unsure whether the pair will split the $250,000 prize money.
