Can Fox's 'Gracepoint' Grasp The Guile Of BBC's 'Broadchurch'?

'Gracepoint' is set to drift away from the 'Broadchurch' narrative and will almost certainly feature a different ending.

Despite casting the same lead actor, those behind 'Gracepoint' - a remake of the acclaimed BBC crime drama 'Broadchurch' - insist the show will have differing plotlines to the original, as well as new characters.

Scottish actor David Tennant, who played troubled DI Alex Hardy so masterfully in Broadchurch returns for the U.S remake, alongside Breaking Bad's Anna Gunn. However, Fox executive producers Dan Futterman and Anya Epstein say they are keen to veer from the original narrative despite wanting to keep the overall aesthetics of Broadchurch intact.

We Take A Look At The Biggest Oscar Upsets Over The Years

We here at Contactmusic.com really hope there's a massive upset at the Oscars on Sunday (February 24, 2013), for no other reason than it's fun to watch the actor who should have won sink into their chair and try and look happy for the surprise recipient, who is dancing in the aisle somewhere. Sometimes, you can pin-point the exact moment when the realisation of absolute failure kicks in. "I lost. I actually lost. I didn't win. Someone else won. I didn't win. I do not need to stand up."

Ok, so it looks unlikely that the 85th Academy Awards will throw up TOO many huge shocks, though should Daniel Day-Lewis miss out on Best Actor, that would certainly represent one of the biggest surprises in Oscar history. Then again, Tom Hanks was nailed on for Saving Private Ryan, and looked what happened there. We thought we'd take a look back at five unbelievable results at the Academy Awards, proving it's not always a done deal.

Lincoln's Daniel-Day Lewis To Outdo Brando, Penn, Hanks With Oscar Win

Daniel Day-Lewis will make Oscar history on February 26, 2013, when - as expected - he takes the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in Steven Spielberg's critically acclaimed Lincoln. Should Hugh Jackman, Bradley Cooper, Joaquin Phoenix or even Denzel Washington steal away the gong, it would almost certainly represent the biggest Best Actor shock since Robert Benigni somehow usurped Tom Hanks and Nick Nolte to the award in 1999. Though Jack Nicholson was considered the favourite, Day-Lewis could have had another award in 2003, (Gangs Of New York) had Adrien Brody not upset the apple-cart for his role in The Pianist.

As 'Lincoln' prepares to hit screens in the UK, critics have seized the opportunity to laud Day-Lewis' performance - "legend", "genius" and "one of the greats" are words and phrases found in almost every review. Ian Nathan of Empire Magazine said, "As unexpected as it is intelligent, thanks to virtuoso work from Spielberg and Kushner, Lincoln is landmark filmmaking, while Day-Lewis is so authentic he pulls off that stovepipe." Matthew Turner of ViewLondon said, "Impressively directed and superbly written, this is an absorbing and enjoyable political drama with an Oscar-worthy central performance from Daniel Day-Lewis." Shaun Munro of What Culture agreed, writing, "Daniel Day-Lewis gives yet another performance for the ages in Steven Spielberg's admirably literate, thoroughly charming biopic."

Gangster Squad Review

Very Good

This may be based on a true story, but the filmmakers never bother exploring the complexities of historical events, instead opting for a comic book-style approach that's entertaining but somewhat unsatisfying. Still, this style-over-substance approach at least produces a rollicking police thriller that's often a lot of fun to watch, packed with gifted actors who gleefully chomp through the scenery.

The setting is 1949 Los Angeles, where the notorious gangster Mickey Cohen (Penn) is launching a Chicago-style mob takeover of the city. The police chief (Nolte) is determined to stop him, but feels surrounded by corruption, so he hires straight-arrow detective John (Brolin) to head up a secret squad that will operate off the books to stop Cohen, whatever it takes. John's pregnant wife (Enos) isn't thrilled by this, but she helps him select his team: techie Conway (Ribisi), gunslinger Max (Patrick), hot-shot Coleman (Mackie) and quick-learning rookie Navidad (Pena). And then there's pretty-boy detective Jerry (Gosling), who courts danger by launching a fling with Mickey's moll Grace (Stone). Understandably, their task doesn't go smoothly.

Billed as the untold story of what really happened, the film ignores quite a few key facts while indulging in implausible plotting and overly colourful characterisations. In other words, it's impossible to believe anything we're watching, which eliminates all of the relevance and resonance that could have filled this story of police corruption, out-of-control capitalism and especially the use of illegal methods to do the right thing. Instead, the film is all shiny surfaces, with flashy production design, too-immaculate costumes and haircuts, and a plot that reduces a complex situation into a simplistic action movie narrative.

Bad News For Cartoonish Gangster Squad - Strong Cast Hasn't Saved Film Noir Melodrama

After a delayed release, the first major review of Gangster Squad has hit the web.

Unfortunately for the movie’s execs, Hollywood Reporter’s resident film critic has deemed it not to be worth the wait. It looks as though this film noir crime thriller is going to fall flat in comparison to leading movies of the genre, such as the excellent LA Confidential, with which this movie has many aesthetic similarities.

Gangster Squad, starring Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Emma Stone and Giovanni Ribisi alongside Sean Penn and Nick Nolte, is set in 1949, an adaptation of Paul Lieberman’s book about the LA mob leader Mickey Cohen. It was originally pulled to re-shoot some scenes in the wake of the Aurora Colorado shooting tragedy last year but nonetheless, its arrival has been highly anticipated not least by virtue of its stellar cast. For McCarthy, though, Gangster Squad is lacking in dimension and whereas Mickey Cohen was widely held to be a charming man who kept his dark side under wraps as far as possible, Sean Penn “lays him exclusively as a raving homicidal maniac who might even have given the Nazi hierarchy pause.”

Parker Trailer

Parker is a skilled thief with a very specific moral code; never kill anyone who doesn't deserve it and never steal from those with little money. Other than that, he is brutal, doing anything it takes to seize his target along with his so-called loyal team. However, one day he finds that his accomplices are not the people he thought they were when they stab him in the back and leave him to die. As single-minded as ever, Parker assumes the new name and identity of Texas guy Daniel Parmitt and sets out to destroy his former allies for what they did to him seeking an unusual partnership with Leslie: a local resident of Palm Beach who has inside information on Parker's targets and agrees to help him despite having reservations about his plan to murder every last one of them and take the loot from their latest robbery.

'Parker' is a crime thriller based on the novel 'Flashfire' by Donald E. Westlake. It has been directed by the Oscar winner that is Taylor Hackford ('An Officer and a Gentleman', 'The Devil's Advocate') and written by John J. McLaughlin ('Black Swan', 'Hitchcock') and will be released in cinemas across the UK from March 8th 2013.

Channing Tatum has been named People magazine's Sexiest Man Alive for 2012, beating the likes of Ben Affleck, Denzel Washington and last year's winner Bradley Cooper in the process. The result confirms the fact that People magazine really, really, hate Ryan Gosling.

Tatum joins a select club of Hollywood stars who have taken the title since the magazine began the feature in 1985. Mel Gibson, Nick Nolte, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Richard Gere and Johnny Depp have been named the sexiest man alive, though the title still evades Ryan Gosling. Some of the Blue Valentine star's fans have already begun bashing their heads against keyboards across the globe. One user said, "channing tatum definitely isn't the sexiest man alive tho like what about joseph gordon levitt OR ryan gosling HELLO PEOPLE," while another said, "Eh, Channing Tatum sexiest man alive? I still think we have to give it up for Ryan Gosling, guy always gets the short end of the stick." Poor old Ryan. Anyway, Tatum, 32, hails from Alabama and is best known for a couple of soppy romantic-comedies, though turned in an excellent comedic performance in 21 Jump Street. Speaking in the latest issue of People magazine, the actor says he's ready to begin a family with wife Jenna Dewan-Tatum, "I'm ready; I think she's ready.The first number that pops into my head is three, but I just want one to be healthy and then we'll see where we go after that.It's really easy for us guys to say, 'I want like 15 kids. Jenna will be like, 'Well you better get another wife!"

The special issue of the magazine also hands out awards in other category, including Men of the Year, Sexy At Every Age and Hot Dogs (a list of Hollywood's dog lovers). Ryan Gosling got a nod in the latter, while Javier Bardem made it only to the scary sounding 50 Shades of Grey.

Gangster Squad - Trailer Trailer

Mickey Cohen is a dangerous Mafia boss with power over the police and the people of Los Angeles in 1949. His mob and his world revolves around drugs, firearms, prostitutes and casinos with power and money being the only consequence in their criminal misdeeds. However, it's not long before some members of the LAPD begin to question their own methods and power and start to realise that they must be the ones to take down Mickey and his gang but to do so they must hang up their LAPD badges and go into this war without mercy. All they need is five or seven men willing to put their lives on the line against this ruthless mob of forty. But it's not just their own lives threatened in this conflict.

'Gangster Squad' is based on the true story of the real infamous Mickey Cohen which was put into the novel 'Tales from the Gangster Squad' by Paul Lieberman. The crime flick has been directed by Ruben Fleischer ('Zombieland', '30 Minutes or Less') and written by Will Beall ('Castle') in his feature film screenplay debut. It was originally meant to be released in September 2012 but it was pushed back to January 11th 2013 following the tragedy of the Aurora, Colorado movie theater shooting. It was deemed inappropriate for it to be released so soon after given that one scene in the movie was to involve a similar theater massacre.

Video - Nick Nolte Indifferent About Photographers

Actor Nick Nolte (The Thin Red Line; Cape Fear; Warrior) leaves Judies Deli in Beverly Hills. Nick gets a huge response as he leaves the deli; he greets the photographers and tells them not to fight, as the photographers scramble to get the best shot. A photographer tells him he will get double the amount of photographers there if he wins an Oscar; he asks Nick for his opinion but the actor merely shrugs as he heads back to his car.

Nick hasn't been nominated for an Academy Award recently; he has, however, been nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the Satellite Awards and the Screen Actors Guild Awards

Veteran actor Nick Nolte (The Thin Red Line; Cape Fear; 48 Hrs; Down and Out in Beverly Hills) leaves a deli in Los Angeles. As they leave, they get ambushed by homeless people begging for money. Nick sees his mother off and sets off down the street but is followed by the homeless people, much to the amusement of the photographers. They soon leave him and Nick continues to his car, telling the photographers to have a good day.

Warrior Review

Very Good

This film may be a real crowd-pleaser, but it's also a shameless string of movie cliches from start to finish. Thankfully, the excellent cast keeps it afloat, holding our interest and getting us to cheer even though we don't really care how it ends.

After running away from home with his mother some 15 years earlier, ex-soldier Tommy (Hardy) drops in on his drunken dad Paddy (Nolte). Tommy isn't impressed that Pop has found God and remained sober for three years, but he agrees to let Pop coach him again as a mixed martial arts fighter. Meanwhile, Tommy's brother Brendan (Edgerton) is estranged from both his brother and his dad. A family man teaching physics at a Philadelphia high school, he's in trouble with the bank over a dodgy mortgage, so returns to his Ultimate Fighter roots.

Peaceful Warrior Review

Evidently, as things like yoga, alternative medicine, and meditation become more accepted by the mainstream, it creates a market of films for the new-agey niche. And that is likely just the audience for Peaceful Warrior, a feel-good, anything's-possible film version of Dan Millman's autobiographical-motivational-self help bestseller, modestly titled Way of the Peaceful Warrior: A Book that Changes Lives.

Scott Mechlowicz plays Dan (which, sure; if an actor is playing you, you definitely want it to be the guy who is a dead ringer for Brad Pitt, only 20 years younger), a hotshot gymnast at Berkeley who is unhappy, despite being a star athlete with great grades and an endless stream of eager co-eds. One middle-of-the-night, Dan happens upon a full-service gas station manned by the gruff-voiced, mysterious Socrates (Nick Nolte), a man who speaks only in platitudes and riddles and seems capable of the impossible.

U Turn Review

Excellent

I can't imagine U Turn in any director's hands except Oliver Stone's. Breaking free from his political obsessions, Stone explores new territory, giving the material a stark edge, innovation, and a thick, memorable atmosphere. In one film he investigates adultery, incest, bad luck, Indian philosophy, gambling, paranoia, murder, deception, fraud, money, and the Russian Mafia. This is an original tale with a full plate, but surprisingly U Turn never feels crowded, contrived, or recycled. It's a feast for the senses, as long as you have a strong stomach.

Similar to Natural Born Killers in style, the film includes black & white inserts, frequent use of hand-held cameras, overexposed shots, vivid close-ups, zip-switches from smooth to grainy, unique camera angles, time-lapse sequences, and hallucinogenic effects. Stone rounded up some of his Nixon crew to establish the technical aspects of the film, including director of photography Robert Richardson, production designer Victor Kempster, and editors Hank Corwin and Thomas Nordberg. The crew shot U Turn in just 42 days, entirely on location in the actual town of Superior, Arizona, fully utilizing the vast landscape. According to the film's production information, the filmmakers revamped four blocks of Superior's main street, even creating new restaurants out of unused storefronts.

Afterglow Review

Good

It's hard to keep up with writer-director Alan Rudolph. He's put out almost a movie a year for the past 25 years without shortchanging his personal style and vision, and he keeps getting great casts along with production money from Robert Altman. Yet, he barely registers at the box office, so his movies get limited distribution and short theatrical runs. To see an Alan Rudolph movie you have to go find one.

Rudolph makes movies about characters living out their fates in ways we often understand and see in ourselves. And though his characters come off as real, his movies seem contrived, sliding between the edges of sweet and biting, while running off on tangents that both intrigue and bore. All at the same time. It's a disorientation he relishes: his view of life and how people really behave. With movies like Choose Me, Trixie, Investigating Sex, and The Secret Lives of Dentists, Rudolph's career is a living, breathing embodiment of quixotic variability.

Simpatico Review

Adapted from Sam Shepard's play about betrayal, blackmail, and a horse racing scam that haunts its conspirators for 20 years, "Simpatico" gets by for a while on a cast full of tense, brutal, benumbed performances.

Nick Nolte stars as Vinnie, a haunted, hard-drinking and fraudulent private eye who has lived a near-destitute existence in Los Angeles for two decades on hush money extorted from a former friend named Carter (Jeff Bridges), his partner in a pony-fixing during their younger days.

As the film opens, Vinnie sets in motion a chain of events designed to see him trade places with Carter, now a rich Kentucky breeder. He plans not only on usurping the wealth his ex-buddy has amassed since their friendship disintegrated, but also on recapturing the cold heart of Rosie (Sharon Stone), the girl that came between them.
