'Parks and Recreation' star Nick Offerman arrives outside the New York studios of 'The Late Show With David Letterman', moustachioed and wearing aviator sunglasses. He heads towards his fans first to greet them and sign autographs. He then stops for paparazzi pictures where he strikes several comical poses before entering the studio building.

After playing comical sidekicks in rom-coms like No Strings Attached and What Happens in Vegas, Lake Bell emerges as a rising-star filmmaker with the smartest, funniest comedy of the year. Winner of the screenwriting award at Sundance, this script is painfully hilarious, drawing on the characters' personalities to take us into a previously unseen side of the movie industry. It's also a rare Hollywood movie that refuses to shy away from anything.
We're talking about voiceover artists here, specifically those who provide the rumbling commentary for movie trailers. The late Don LaFountaine was the voice behind all of those iconic "In a world..." trailers, and now a studio wants to revive them for a new epic quadrilogy. The top contender for the job is Sam (Melamed), a veteran who decides to let his protege, the egotistical womaniser Gustav (Marino), have the job. Then Sam's voice-coach daughter Carol (Bell) throws her hat in the ring, which is unthinkable because a woman has never narrated this kind of trailer. She prepares for the audition with the help of a love-struck sound engineer (Martin), but is distracted by issues between her sister and brother-in-law (Watkins and Corddry) and the fact that her dad's new girlfriend (Holden) is younger than she is.
Bell juggles all of these plot strands brilliantly as a writer, director and actor, generously giving her costars the most riotously funny dialog while Carol pings around between them. And since we see everything through her eyes, she emerges as a hugely engaging woman who is smart, skilled and also likeably flawed. Every performance is natural and amusing, with the kind of astutely witty dialog actors can really sink their teeth into. And there are some uproarious cameos along the way, including Offerman as a wry colleague, Davis as a studio head, Longoria as a vocal client and Diaz as the star of a Hunger Games-style saga.

Consistently amusing but never uproariously funny, this comedy plays it relatively safely by gently subverting our expectations of Aniston and Roberts, while making rising-star Poulter the butt of most jokes. There's just enough rude humour to keep fans of adult-oriented comedies happy, even if the movie continually reveals a squidgy-soft underbelly of sentimentality. But it's fun while it lasts.
The chaos begins when happy small-time Denver pot dealer David (Sudeikis) is robbed, leaving him indebted to his supplier Brad (Helms). Then he's offered a way out: travel to Mexico and collect a "smidge" of weed to smuggle back across the border in an RV. To increase his chances of getting through without an inspection, he creates a fake family from his neighbours: desperate stripper Rose (Aniston), lonely geek Kenny (Poulter) and homeless tough-girl Casey (Roberts). And the fact that they struggle to act like a convincing family is the least of their problems as they're chased by two vicious goons (Sisley and Willig) and befriended by a too-friendly couple (Offerman and Hahn) along the road.
Yes, this is one of those road comedies in which something unexpected happens every step of the way. Sudeikis rides out the film relatively unruffled, while Aniston's big scene is a scorchingly over-the-top striptease performed to distract a drug kingpin. Roberts' only subplot is a silly liaison with a moronic skater (Young). These sequences are carefully calculated to be mildly funny but never embarrassing to the big American stars. On the other hand, acclaimed British actor Poulter (see Son of Rambow and Wild Bill) dives in to his humiliating scenarios with gusto, from an awkward romance with another girl (Quinn) to kissing practice with his "mother" and "sister" to a ghastly spider bite. In the process, he walks off with the whole film.

This is the kind of American independent comedy-drama that restores our faith in the cinema, combining a talented cast, witty direction and a razor-sharp script to reboot the coming-of-age genre. It's an original approach that completely wins us over; even the film's slightly too-wacky touches are genuinely hilarious. And it's all grounded in realistic characters we can identify with, especially when they're in amusingly awkward situations.
The story centres on Joe (Robinson), a teen who is fed up with the way his widowed father Frank (Offerman) takes out his grief on anyone at hand. Joe's sister (Brie) has already escaped, moving in with her goofy boyfriend (Cordero), and now that school has let out for the summer, Joe decides to build a bolt-hole in the woods. He finds a collaborator in his best pal Patrick (Basso), whose inane parents (Mullally and Jackson) are so annoying that he has broken out in hives. Then Biaggio (Arias), a strange kid no one really knows, joins them to build a secret cabin where no one can find them. And they love this independent lifestyle so much that they never want summer to end.
Along the way, the film takes a wonderfully honest look at the horrors of adolescence. Joe's and Patrick's parents always say the most embarrassing things imaginable, so getting away from them is like a blast of freedom. And there's a very strong female lead in Kelly (Moriarty), the girl Joe fantasises about even though she has eyes for other boys. Robinson and Basso are excellent in the lead roles, playing characters we can easily identify with and root for. Arias is hilarious as the rather ridiculous Biaggio, making the most of a role that's perhaps the film's only false note: he's just too nutty to be believable.

Rob Lowe and Rashida Jones will be leaving NBC's comedy Parks and Recreation in the middle of the sixth episode. The serie's creator, Mike Schur, released a statement on Wednesday (31st July) confirming actors would be leaving and that they would be missed.

Parks and Recreation, which airs on NBC, centres on Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) who is the deputy director of the Parks and Recreation department of the fictional town of Pawnee. She is supported by a number of friends and employees, including local nurse Ann Perkins (Rashida Jones) and a former state auditor Chris Traeger (Rob Lowe). Parks and Recreation also features Aziz Ansari, Nick Offerman, Audrey Plaza, Paul Schneider and Chris Platt.

David isn't your classic drug dealer type - he sells pot here and there for the personal use of his buyers, but he certainly tries not to get involved with the more serious and deadly aspects of it. But when his large stash is stolen, he is forced to pay back a big-time dealer by venturing to Mexico to smuggle a 'small' shipment of marijuana across the border. However, he soon begins to release that it's not going to be at all easy to get across the border without being searched and so he hatches a plan to rope together a fake family called 'the Millers' to help him appear like an average tourist. He gets a young, slightly over-friendly teen friend of his to act as his son and pays an aggressive gutter punk to be his daughter, and his stripper friend to be his wife. However, things still don't go as smoothly as they'd like when their camper van breaks down, his 'son' is hospitalised after an allergic reaction to a spider bite and they are caught with the drugs by ruthless Mexican mobsters.
This brilliant comedy has been directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber ('Dodgeball', 'The Mysteries of Pittsburgh') and written by Bob Fisher, Steve Faber ('Wedding Crashers'), Sean Anders, John Morris ('She's Out of My League') and Dan Fybel. 'We're The Millers' will hit UK cinemas everywhere on August 23rd 2013.

With a star-studded ensemble cast playing a variety of well-known Lego mini-figures, the film is definitely set to be a hit all round when it comes to screen on February 14th 2014.

The Kings of Summer isn't exactly a title that will have many hanging off the edge of their seat in anticipation, it has some critics commenting that it could be the the surprise hit of the spring/summer indie-box office line-up. Still, a good proportion seem to agree that the film fails to light up the cinema screen and is one of the indie-flicks to stay clear of, at least until it comes out on DVD anyway.

The film follows three teenage friends - Joe (Nick Robinson), Patrick (Gabriel Basso) and Biaggio (Moises Arias) - who decide to spend their summer building their own house in the middle of the wood, living from the land and enduring a parent-free summer of a lifetime. With a father-son relationship undertone that Time Magazine's Mary F. Pols says make the film "really work" as a multi-faceted comedy-drama. Publishers such as the USA Today and New York Times also agree that the film "tackles youth with off-kilter charm" and is "embellished with clever cinematic flourishes" respectively. If you're still a little apprehensive about going to see it, the film also stars ultimate man Nick Offerman and the lovely Alison Brie.

However, when all his marijuana gets stolen, he is left having to pay a big-time drug criminal by embarking on a trip to Mexico to bring in his latest small shipment. A young teen who lives in his block informs him that he's most likely going to get searched at the border and, not accustomed to smuggling more than a pocketful, his efforts will be futile. Thus he decides to enlist his stripper neighbour to pretend to be his wife, the teen to be his son and an even younger gutter punk to be his daughter as he concocts a plan to pretend to be a normal family that will hopefully get overlooked as humble holidaymakers. However, things don't go as smoothly as they'd hoped as they wind up breaking down in their camper van, meeting a sexually experimental couple and getting busted by gun toting Mexican gangsters.

The first full trailer for Jordan Vogt-Robert’s new movie ‘The Kings of Summer’ is finally here, following on from the intriguing teaser clip we got last month. Written by Chris Galletta in his feature film debut, the comedy created a buzz at Sundance, with many critics likening it to classic adventure movie ‘Stand By Me’ and Seth Rogen’s ‘Superbad’. We can certainly see the similarities, though ‘The Kings of Summer’ may well end up holding its own against both.
It follows the story of teenager Joe Toy, who is struggling under the weight of his over-bearing single father Frank. The rules, curfews and sanction become too much and Joe decides to take off into the woods and spent the summer building his own house. He takes best friend Patrick along for the ride, while a weird unpredictable kid by the name of Biaggio tags along too. The trio attempt to live off the land and take care of themselves, while a search party is put together in their hometown with police fearing the boys have been kidnapped. The snappy writing ensures there’s plenty of laughs in the trailer, and ’21 Jump Street’ star Nick Offerman comes across particularly well as Joe’s sarcastic straight-to-the-point father Frank.

Despite taking a full-on approach to the issue of alcoholism, filmmaker Ponsoldt undermines his own case by telling a story about the problem itself rather than the people caught up in it. And by avoiding the bigger questions, he leaves us with characters and a situation that are hard to care about, no matter how harrowing the story gets.
Schoolteacher Kate (Winstead) is a mess. Out drinking every night with her husband Charlie (Paul), she turns up drunk to teach her classroom of 6-year-olds. One morning when she's sick, she lets them believe she's pregnant. But lying to the kids sparks her guilt, which gets worse when a colleague (Offerman) covers for her and her boss (Mullally) throws a baby shower. So she joins AA and gets help from her sponsor Jenny (Spencer) to straighten out her life. But once she's sober she wonders whether she can stay with the still-drunk Charlie.
Essentially the film lets all of the characters off the hook since it's the alcohol that's the real villain, not any failing of willpower or self-discipline. In this world, it's not possible to be "the kind of people who have a glass of wine with dinner": you're either a falling-down drunk or a pious teetotaller. And even worst, both Kate and Charlie have tragic back-stories that explain why they are alcoholics. So the film's approach is purely superficial, which makes it impossible to identify with the characters or even root for them to sort out their messy lives.

Kate and Charlie Hannah's marriage came about through their shared love of partying and getting drunk. All is well in their relationship as long as they are drinking together. However, when Kate's excessive partying pushes her into the dangerous territory of hard drugs threatening her teaching career when she continuously lies to her boss, she decides that it's time to deal with her problem and quit the booze for good. While Charlie vows to help her, he finds going sober less easy and Kate beings to question whether their relationship is built on love or whether their vision of each other has been blurred by alcohol over the past years. Quitting drinking also forces Kate to confront her conduct at work and her difficult relationship with her mother.
'Smashed' is a comedy drama with more drama than comedy. While the antics of Kate and Charlie may be funny at first sight, it is clear as the story goes on that this a story about burying your darkest problems. It has been directed by James Ponsoldt ('Off the Black') who also co-wrote the movie with actress Susan Burke in her screenplay debut. 'Smashed' is scheduled for release this year on December 14th 2012.
